In the treatment of 45 cases with non-bony lumbar stenosis, we adopted remain of spinal process and supraspinal ligament, excision of limited lamina and ligament flavum, enlargement of spinal canal. Follow-up of 40 cases showed 31 were excellent, 7, good and 2 poor. Satisfactory results were obtained in 95% of the cases: non-bony lumbar stenosis considered a type of acquired lumbar stenosis. Clinically, it was characterized by claudication. Diagnosis of the disease mainly depends on dynamic flexion-extension myelography. The advantages of this method include excision of spinal canal soft tissu…

The aim of the present study was to determine the significance of different SEP techniques and parameters in clinical evaluation of cases of lumbar and cervical root lesions and stenosis of the spinal canal. Using a qualitative rating scale, 92 cases were analyzed retrospectively whose primary diagnosis was questioned because of conflicting data from clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological testing. In conclusion SEP techniques proved to be a useful tool in exclusing other e.g. demyelinating diseases. Except for the time-consuming method of segmental stimulation, the demonstration of…

As part of the spine, the vertebral canal represents a central structure protecting the spinal cord running within it. Since alterations to the spinal canal and adjacent structures can have a significant impact on the spinal cord, knowledge of the physiological vertebral canal dimensions is essential. Compression of spinal nerves at the lumbosacral junction is the primary cause of cauda equina syndrome (CES). Although CES is common in dogs, it is rarely documented in cats. Given the lack of information on normal vertebral canal dimensions in cats, it is necessary to collect data and verify cur…

PURPOSE: The aim of study was to employ the Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN) deep learning model to diminish the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow artifacts in cervical spine MRI. We also evaluate the agreement in quantifying spinal canal stenosis.
METHODS: For training model, we collected 9633 axial MR image pairs from 399 subjects. Then, additional 104 image pairs from 19 subjects were gathered for the test set. The deep learning model was developed using CycleGAN to reduce CSF flow artifacts, where T2 TSE images served as input, and T2 FFE images, known for fewer CSF flow artif…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to investigate facet tropism and its impact on the development of lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) in patients with LSCS. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bilateral facet joint angles at the L3-4, L4-5, and L5-S1 levels were measured on axial plane in the lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 82 patients aged between 32 and 75 with LSCS, and 82 healthy individuals aged between 30 and 66 without LSCS, who were considered as the normal group. RESULTS Both groups in our study consisted of both males and females. The mean age was 51.4 for patients with LSCS …

Thickened ligamentum flavum has been considered as a major cause of central lumbar spinal canal stenosis (CLSCS). Previous studies have demonstrated that ligamentum flavum thickness (LFT) is correlated with aging, degenerative spinal stenosis, and disc degeneration. Thus, hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum is a major cause of CLSCS, and measurement of LFT has been considered a morphologic parameter in the diagnosis of CLSCS. To our knowledge, comparison of LFT between central and lateral lesions has not been reported. In addition, no research has analyzed best clinical cutoff values of centr…

Ligamentum flavum hypertrophy (LFH) is a known contributor to lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). However, the clinical significance and quantitative role of LFH compared to other components, such as disc bulging and facet hypertrophy, have not yet been examined. We investigated the correlation between the quantitative radiological factors, clinical symptoms, and outcomes in patients with LSCS. In total, 163 patients diagnosed with single-level (L4-L5) stenosis were included. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to claudication severity: >100 m for mild (n = 92) and < 100 m for s…

AIM: To assess the role of triangular vertebral canal shape (VCS) in pain severity, pain-related findings, and postoperative satisfaction in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) who had undergone decompressive surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study conducted at a single center included 61 consecutive patients who had undergone surgical treatment for LSS. By comparing pre- and postoperative data, the role of triangular VCS in pain severity [assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS)], pain-related findings, and postoperative satisfaction of patients was examined. VCS w

PURPOSE: The pain involved in the herniated discs could be generated by some mobility of the nerve roots during straight leg raising (SLR). SLR produces some movement of nerves, but the magnitude of this displacement needs to be thorough, that is why we have investigated lumbo-sacral nerve root displacement in the spinal canal during the passive straight leg raise (SLR).
METHODS: Fourteen cadavers underwent laminectomy to mark the nerve roots of L2-S1 with lead balls. X-rays were taken during different movements imposed on the body: bilateral hip extension, left SLR then right and bilateral S…

PURPOSE: We aimed to study generational changes in the dimensions of cervical and lumbar bony spinal canals in Western Switzerland.
METHODS: A total of 254 patients were retrospectively included, 144 of whom were born during 1940-1949 and 110 during 1970-1979. Cervical spine CTs were performed as part of the spinal clearance procedure following trauma (n = 135) or while investigating neurological symptoms (CT angiography, n = 119). Three independent observers digitally measured the cross-sectional area (CSA) at pedicle levels from C0 to C7 and the anteroposterior diameter (APD) at C3, C5, and…

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of riboflavin/UV-A corneal phototherapy in comparison with topical antimicrobials for the treatment of corneal ulcers in horses. Nineteen horses with a diagnosis of corneal ulceration were randomised to receive either corneal phototherapy (11 horses) or topical antimicrobial therapy (8 horses). The corneal phototherapy consisted in the application of a riboflavin-enriched ophthalmic solution onto the cornea for 20 min followed by cornea UV-A irradiation at 30 mW/cm2 for 3 min using a point-of-care UV-A device. A complete ophthalmological exa

OBJECTIVE: The author main objective was to improve the previously developed technique of split laminotomy and moderate enlargement of the spinal canal with preservation of the majority of posterior structures, and to avoid the complications of the classic autologous bone grafting procedure.
METHODS: A multilevel spinous process splitting and distracting laminotomy technique with complementary spacer insertion between the laminar parts was developed. We used Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK) cages. This improved method was used in five patients to remove malignant intramedullary tumors at the th…
