The stromal cells of three cystosarcoma phyllodes, five typical fibroadenomas, and one juvenile fibroadenoma were studied by light and electron microscopy. Immunohistochemical staining for the S-100 protein also was performed on tissues from each of the three categories. On ultrastructural examination, cells comprising the three varieties of lesions were similar. Cells with fibroblastic features predominated in all cases. A 34-yr-old woman had clinical, radiological, gastroscopic, and histological evidence of infiltrative and erosive gastritis involving the antrum. A rare glomus tumor of the lip is reported and--with nineteen glomus tumors from other sites--examined immunohistochemically with both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. In every case, the glomus cells showed strong reactivity with antivimentin, and factor VIII-related antigen was consistently identified in the endothelial cells but not in the glomus cells. Antiblood group A antigen was located in endothelial cells in nine cases; of these nine, five also showed focal staining in glomus cells. By means of retrograde transport of the fluorescent marker primulin the initial part of the sympathetic innervation of the myenteric nervous plexus of the descending colon has been characterized in cats and guinea pigs. When primulin is injected into the myenteric nervous plexus, marked neurons are revealed in the caudal mesenteric ganglion, in the celiac plexus ganglia, in the sympathetic trunk ganglia. The marked nervous populations of the extramural sympathetic ganglia differ in their form, size, number of neurons and their distribution.

The copper concentration in the lysosomes of periportal hepatocytes of nine patients with primary biliary cirrhosis was determined by X-ray microanalysis in ultrathin sections, the chlorine concentration of the embedding medium being taken as internal standard. Mast cells are demonstrated in synovial membranes of patients with osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis using a new staining principle based on interaction of heparin in mast cell granules with peroxidase labeled avidin. Immunofluorescence (IF) and immunoperoxidase (IP) methods for the demonstration of IgG bound to intercellular substance in pemphigus skin were compared. Human peripheral lymphocytes were irradiated with 0.05-0.5 Gy of 220 keV X-rays. After application of either a conventional or the fluorescence plus Giemsa (FPG) staining technique, the dose response for dicentrics and acentrics was studied. The analysis of exclusively first-division cells (M1), carried out by the FPG method, revealed significantly higher aberration yields as compared with the results of the conventional method. Silver stainability of nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) appears to be correlated with the presence of grouped sulfhydryl (SH) side chains of proteins. In fact, heavy metals with high affinity for SH groups, such as Hg and Cu, do prevent the silver staining reaction. Ferricyanide, which is known to oxidize SH to disulfides, also prevents any further reaction with silver. Millipore filter imprints of conjunctiva in patients with conjunctival symptoms revealed a 'snake-like' appearance of the chromatin in nuclei of epithelial cells. A total of 40 patients were investigated. Abnormal cells were found in 8/16 patients with long-term keratoconjunctivitis sicca and in 6/24 patients suspected for Sjøgrens syndrome.
