Patch augmentation surgery for rotator cuff repair: the PARCS mixed-methods feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: A rotator cuff tear is a common, disabling shoulder problem. Symptoms may include pain, weakness, lack of shoulder mobility and sleep disturbance. Many patients require surgery to repair the tear; however, there is a high failure rate. There is a need to improve the outcome of rotator cuff surgery, and the use of patch augmentation (on-lay or bridging) to provide support to the healing process and improve patient outcomes holds promise. Patches have been made using different materials (e.g. human/animal skin or tissue and synthetic materials) and processes (e.g. woven or mesh). OB

Using a participatory action strategic approach to enhance accessibility and participation in arts and cultural events: results of four focus groups.

BACKGROUND: Cultural events are abundant in a midwestern college town; however, individuals with disabilities have expressed concerns about their accessibility. Policymakers, business owners, and managers often ignore disability-related issues. Research shows accessibility is the main environmental barrier to participation in arts and cultural events. Individuals with disabilities are disconnected from managers of cultural organizations and city leaders. The lack of awareness about accessibility, including access to the built environment, impedes participation in cultural events in this colleg

Engaging tuberculosis-affected people in investment decisions: applying a people-centered design approach in Viet Nam.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from an infectious disease globally, yet financing for the TB response continues to fall far short of identified needs. Decisions about how resources are allocated are often made with limited engagement of people directly affected by TB, potentially overlooking lived experiences and community-defined priorities. This study was implemented in Viet Nam to align future TB investments with community-defined priorities and programmatic feasibility. This paper describes the process and its application to priority setting and interventi

Ethical considerations of deep brain stimulation for treatment refractory schizophrenia: surveying stakeholders.

INTRODUCTION: Ethical concerns have been raised by both current and historically controversial neurosurgical interventions for treatment-refractory schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder (TR-SZ). Considering advances in next-generation deep brain stimulation (DBS), initial success in treating a few cases of TR-SZ, and how challenging trial enrollment is, transparency and disseminating knowledge about DBS is important, as is input from involved groups. Here information was presented about DBS as an experimental treatment option for TR-SZ to stakeholders to gauge enthusiasm after considerati

Behind the screens: perceived impact of COVID-19 on education and the learning environment among school-aged children in the Philippines.

For school-aged children and their families in the Philippines, nationwide quarantine restrictions implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in one of the longest school closures globally; schools re-opened to in-person learning nearly 2.5 years after the initial closure. We aimed to explore the experiences of students aged 8–17 years, their caregivers, and local stakeholders during this time and understand the impact these extended closures had on students’ academic and social development. From June-November 2023, we conducted focus group discussions (FGD) among students aged 12–17 yea

What farmers think about using crop biotechnology to boost photosynthesis in rice and potato.

Boosting crop photosynthesis holds promise for meeting the needs of a growing population in a warming climate. However, improving photosynthesis with crop biotechnology is a new prospect for farmers and other key agrifood stakeholders, who will determine the success of such pioneering plant breeding initiatives. We conducted focus groups with 62 participants in four countries to understand farmer and agrifood stakeholder perspectives towards the aim of boosting photosynthesis through biotechnology in rice and potato, two of the world's most important crops. We found farmers were positive towar

Q fever expertise among human and veterinary health professionals in Germany - A stakeholder analysis of knowledge gaps.

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. In Germany, the common sources of human infections include small ruminants that excrete the pathogen. Q fever in humans can be asymptomatic or nonspecific. However, severe disease progression is also possible, which can lead to death. Q fever in small ruminants is usually asymptomatic, although reproductive disorders may occur. To protect humans from Q fever, it is important that human and veterinary health professionals (practitioners/health authority employees) have comprehensive knowledge of the diagnosis, control and prevention of Q fever,

Co-Creation of a Study Protocol to Assess the Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in the Management of Fatigue in Children and Young People With Acquired Brain Injury (Fatiguebrain-tDCS).

BACKGROUND: Children and young people (CYP) with moderate/severe acquired brain injury (ABI) often have problems with chronic cognitive fatigue. Methylphenidate, a controlled drug, and cognitive behavioural therapy have been used to manage fatigue, but their effects are not fully established, and they are not widely available. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has shown promise for managing fatigue in adults with neurological conditions. However, no studies have used tDCS to manage fatigue in CYP with ABI nor have involved patient
