Cholecystokinin modulation of apomorphine- or amphetamine-induced stereotypy in rats: opposite effects.

Stereotyped behavior can be induced by the dopamine agonist apomorphine or by the releasing agent amphetamine. Cholecystokinin influence on dopamine-mediated behaviors has been extensively studied but a real controversy remains. Our purpose was to further characterize the dopamine-cholecystokinin interaction in apomorphine- and amphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior using sulphated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK8) and cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK4) treatments. The results showed that CCK8 decreases apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior and CCK4 has no effect. CCK4 and CCK8 increase

Dental procedure under opioid-free balanced anaesthesia in a child with Rett syndrome who convulsed on every attempt to feed: Case report.

Rett syndrome is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder which occurs in females and includes autism, spasticity, hypotonia, microcephaly, scoliosis, stereotyping, abnormal respiratory control and seizures. They are at an increased predisposition for QT interval prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias. An 8-year-old severely intellectually impaired girl with Rett syndrome was referred to us for anaesthesia for multiple dental abscess drainage and rehabilitation. Her frequency of convulsions had increased and she convulsed every time an attempt was made to feed her. The pain of chewing exacerbated t…

Dissociation between spontaneously emitted and apomorphine-induced stereotypy in Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii.

Stereotyped behavior is repetitive, topographically invariant motor activity that lacks an obvious function. We have previously characterized the spontaneous and persistent stereotypies that occur in deer mice housed in standard laboratory cages. Providing these animals with enriched environments markedly reduces their vulnerability to develop stereotypic behavioral repertoires, thus enabling us to generate behaviorally distinct (stereotypic and nonstereotypic) mice of the same species. As stereotypic behaviors are readily induced by systemic administration of a dopamine (DA) agonist, the pres

Beliefs About Emotion Are Tied to Beliefs About Gender: The Case of Men's Crying in Competitive Sports.

Gender and emotion stereotypes suggest that men do not and should not cry, yet men's crying seems to be particularly prominent in contexts such as competitive sports. In two studies, I investigated the possibility that men's crying is more frequent and seen as more acceptable in these settings because such contexts are perceived to be highly masculine, and can buffer men from the negative consequences associated with violating gender stereotypes. Specifically, I tested the hypotheses that (a) observers would perceive men's crying more positively in a masculine-stereotyped than a feminine-stere

Antigen receptor stereotypy in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The discovery of almost identical or 'stereotyped' B-cell receptor immunoglobulins (BcR IG) among unrelated patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cemented the idea of antigen selection in disease ontogeny and evolution. The systematic analysis of the stereotypy phenomenon in CLL revealed that around one-third of CLL patients may be grouped into subsets based on shared sequence motifs within the variable heavy complementarity determining region 3. Stereotyped subsets display a strikingly similar biology of the leukemic clones, referring to many different levels, from the immunogeneti

The effects of gender and music video imagery on sexual attitudes.

This study examined the influence of gender and exposure to gender-stereo-typed music video imagery on sexual attitudes (adversarial sexual beliefs, acceptance of rape myths, acceptance of interpersonal violence, and gender role stereotyping). A group of 44 U.S. college students were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups that viewed either a video portraying stereotyped sexual imagery or a video that excluded all sexual images. Exposure to traditional sexual imagery had a significant main effect on attitudes about adversarial sexual relationships, and gender had main effects on 3 of 4 sexual atti…

The effects of blocking mouthing of leisure items on their effectiveness as reinforcers.

Leisure items are commonly used as reinforcers in behavior-analytic applications. However, a defining feature of autism is the occurrence of stereotypy, and individuals with autism often engage leisure items in a stereotyped manner. The opportunity for stereotyped interaction may be the only aspect of a contingent stimulus that makes it a reinforcer for appropriate behavior. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of blocking stereotyped reinforcer interaction on reinforcer efficacy for 2 children with autism. Results showed that blocking stereotypic reinforcer interaction did not influ

How Can I Help You? The Influence of Situation and Hostile Sexism on Perception of Appropriate Gender of Conversational Agents.

Conversational agents (CAs) are increasingly being developed on commercial websites nowadays. We tested in two studies whether gender stereotypes apply to non-gendered CAs. In the first study, participants evaluated whether CAs are expected to display more masculine or feminine characteristics in situations designed to be stereotypically male or female. The sexist attitudes of the respondents were also measured. As predicted, participants perceived that a CA should be more masculine in stereotypically male situations and more feminine in stereotypically female situations. Moreover, we found th

The Stereotypy Rating Inventory for frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

A many behavioral disturbances, Stereotypic behaviors are among the best discriminators of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD). A recent preliminary report suggests many of the behavioral symptoms, including stereotypic behaviors in FTLD patients, respond to medication with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. However, there is no scale that evaluates stereotypic behaviors comprehensively. To assess the wide range of stereotypic behaviors encountered in FTLD, we developed a new instrument, the Stereotypy Rating Inventory (SRI). The SRI assesses five distinctive stereotypic behavioral

The gift of dyslexia: what is the harm in it?

Dyslexia, characterized by word reading and spelling deficits, has historically been viewed through a medical model of disability. However, a countermovement has emerged, emphasizing the strengths and abilities of neurodiverse individuals, including those with dyslexia. The concept of neurodiversity, which was initially introduced to help inform understanding of a mild form of autism, has expanded to include dyslexia. The expansion has occurred alongside a similar portrayal of dyslexia as an advantage that comes with specific gifts, creating a positive stereotype. While intended to empower ind

Impaired instrumental choice in crib-biting horses (Equus caballus).

Horses displaying an oral stereotypy were tested on an instrumental choice paradigm to examine differences in learning from non-stereotypic counterparts. Stereotypic horses are known to have dysfunction of the dorsomedial striatum, and lesion studies have shown that this region may mediate response-outcome learning. The paradigm was specifically applied in order to examine learning that requires maintenance of response-outcome judgements. The non-stereotypic horses learned, over three sessions, to choose a more immediate reinforcer, whereas the stereotypic horses failed to do so. This suggests

Tongue twisters: feeding enrichment to reduce oral stereotypy in giraffe.

Stereotypic behavior has been well-studied and documented in a variety of animals including primates, carnivores, and domesticated ungulates. However, very little information is known about stereotypic behavior of captive exotic ungulates. Giraffe have been found to perform a wide range of stereotypic behaviors. According to a survey of zoological institutions, oral stereotypies, specifically the licking of nonfood objects are the most prevalent stereotypic behaviors observed in giraffe. Their performance appears to be related to feeding and rumination and may be a result of the inability of a

Race, ethnicity, and eating disorder recognition by peers.

We investigated racial/ethnic stereotyping in the recognition and referral of eating disorders with 663 university students. We explored responses to problem and eating disorder recognition and health care referrals after subjects read a vignette concerning a patient of a different race/ethnic background presenting with eating disorders. A series of three 4 × 3 ANOVAs revealed significant main effects for eating disorders across all three outcome variables. There were no significant main effects across the four different race/ethnicity conditions and no significant race by condition interactio…

We can do it: the interplay of construal orientation and social comparisons under threat.

The authors investigated how a collective self-construal orientation in combination with positive social comparisons "turns off" the negative effects of stereotype threat. Specifically, Experiment 1 demonstrated that stereotype threat led to increased accessibility of participants' collective self ("we"). Experiment 2 showed that this feeling of "we-ness" in the stereotype threat condition centered on the participants' stereotyped group membership and not on other important social groups (e.g., students). Experiment 3 indicated that in threat situations, when participants' collective self is a

The power of talk: developing discriminatory group norms through discussion.

Research has shown that group discussion can increase intergroup prejudice and discrimination. However, we know little about the process by which discussion has this effect. Therefore, four studies were conducted in a real-world context to investigate this process. Results suggest that discussing a negative societal stereotype (relative to individual rumination in Studies 1 and 3 and alternative discussions in Studies 2 and 3) increases intentions to engage in discrimination against the out-group target of the stereotype. This is mediated by the formation of an in-group norm which supports dis

The dismantling of a myth: a review of eating disorders and socioeconomic status.

OBJECTIVE: A key feature of the stereotype that exists of those groups and individuals most likely to develop an eating disorder relates to socioeconomic status. The prevailing wisdom about this relationship is that there is an increased prevalence of eating disorders in high socioeconomic groups. The aim of this paper is to assess the validity of this view and to examine the ways in which this stereotype was created. METHOD: Articles written between the early 1970s and the early 1990s, which include assessment of socioeconomic status, are reviewed and the evidence for and against the stereot
