Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection Following Bilateral Strabismus Surgery: Case Report.

A rare case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) after strabismus surgery is reported in a 7-year-old girl. The child presented with progressive pain and discharge, which was non-responsive to initial antibiotics. Surgical exploration and culture confirmed MRSA. Targeted vancomycin and linezolid led to complete resolution of the signs and symptoms. This case underscores importance of early postoperative follow-up and high clinical suspicion, coupled with prompt collaboration with microbiologists, particularly when managing unusual or drug-resistant postoperative infections.

Does Axial Length Influence the Dose Effect of Horizontal Strabismus Surgery?

BACKGROUND: Dose effect (DE) of strabismus surgery is thought to decrease with increasing axial length (AL), and it has been suggested that this effect may be more important in hyperopes over + 2 D. Here, we analyse the influence of AL on the DE of horizontal strabismus surgery in regard to its clinical relevance. METHODS: Retrospective chart analysis of patients who had undergone horizontal strabismus surgery between 2020 and 2023. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: descriptive analysis and ANOVA (R 4.1.2). RESULTS: There were 65 patients (34 male and 31 female) included; mean age: 18.0 years (range 5 …

Restrictive strabismus caused by infantile myositis masquerading as Duane retraction syndrome.

We report a rare case of restrictive strabismus in a pediatric patient who was initially misdiagnosed with Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) because she had large-angle exotropia, restricted adduction, globe retraction, narrowing of the palpebral fissure, and downshoot on attempted adduction. Notably, the parents first observed strabismus at 12 months of age, with photographs taken before 6 months of age revealing no ocular misalignment. Despite the absence of typical inflammatory signs, the temporal discrepancy, characterized by delayed onset inconsistent with congenital DRS, prompted further i…

Management of Mechanical Strabismus After Complicated Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).

Objectives: Although considered a safe procedure, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) can cause various significant ophthalmic complications, i.e., serious extraocular muscle (EOM) damage. The aim of this study is to review the surgical management outcomes of patients with mechanical strabismus and diplopia as a complication of FESS, who referred to ophthalmological department in Norbert Barlicki University Teaching Hospital No. 1 over the 5-year period from 2018 to 2023. Methods: The records of seven consecutive patients with diplopia following endoscopic sinus surgery were retrospecti…

Increase in blood derived mitochondrial DNA copy number in strabismus patients.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in mitochondrial energy homeostasis can lead to various disorders, including ocular motility aberrations. Previous studies have suggested the involvement of mitochondrial aberrations in strabismus etiology. We compared the blood-derived mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number from comitant strabismus patients with that from age-matched controls, and also compared expression of mitochondrial biogenesis genes in a separate set of extraocular muscle samples from strabismic and control subjects. METHODS: Blood samples from 93 strabismic (39 esotropic, 54 exotropic) and 93 …

Subretinal Abscess Complicated by Post-infectious Retinal Vasculitis Following Strabismus Surgery.

An 8-year-old girl presented with a subretinal abscess after strabismus surgery. This was treated successfully with medial rectus suture removal, pars plana vitrectomy, intravitreal antibiotics, and intravenous antibiotics. Recovery was complicated by acute post-infectious retinal vasculitis after tapering high-dose corticosteroids, requiring an extended corticosteroid regimen over 2 months until resolution. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2023;60(3):e26-e30.].

[Results after graded recession of inferior oblique muscle in strabismus sursoadductorius].

Introduction: Idiopathic strabismus sursoadductorius is characterized by an overaction of the inferior oblique (IO) muscle, with elevation of the eye in adduction. This can result in chronic headache, eye pain, diplopia and abnormal head posture. Aim: Presentation of clinical results after graded recession of inferior oblique overaction (IOOA) in strabismus sursoadductorius. Method: During a period of 6 years (2012-2017) we performed a dosed transposition of IO muscle in 53 patients in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Semmelweis University and analyzed the clinical results retrospectivel…

Chronic inflammatory granulomata after use of GenTeal gel during strabismus surgery.

Subconjunctival granulomata developed in 2 patients after use of GenTeal gel to lubricate the cornea during strabismus repair. We report the clinical findings and histopathology of the subconjunctival nodules. These lesions are similar to those previously reported following use of GenTeal gel in retinal surgery and use of similar large polymers in nonocular surgeries. Copious irrigation should be considered when conjunctival wounds are exposed to GenTeal gel, and alternative corneal wetting agents should be considered for use during strabismus surgery.

Infected conjunctival pyogenic granuloma at strabismus surgery site mimicking conjunctival abscess.

We present a rare case of infected pyogenic conjunctival granuloma mimicking a conjunctival abscess as complication of strabismus surgery in a Saudi girl with exotropia. Despite administration of local antibiotics following strabismus surgery, a patient presented with localised redness and discharge after three weeks. The patient was afebrile with no signs of pre-septal or orbital cellulitis. After culture (Staphylococcus aureus) sensitivity testing the patient was prescribed oral Amoxicillin and Clavulanate and reviewed under general anaesthesia. A 55 mm2 conjunctival pyogenic granuloma was n…

Augmented superior rectus transposition surgery for vertical strabismus in moebius syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is a rare disease characterized by unilateral or bilateral congenital nonprogressive facial nerve palsy along with limitation of ocular abductions. Vertical Rectus Transpositions with posterior fixation suture is known to correct abduction deficiencies in case of Moebius syndrome. Traditionally both superior and inferior rectus transposition are done to prevent any post operative vertical imbalance. The purpose of reporting this case is to evaluate superior rectus transposition augmented with posterior fixation suture along with bilateral recession of medial rect

Strabismus surgery before versus after completion of amblyopia therapy in children.

BACKGROUND: Normal visual development occurs when the brain is able to integrate the visual input from each of the two eyes to form a single three-dimensional image. The process of development of complete three-dimensional vision begins at birth and is almost complete by 24 months of age. The development of this binocular vision is hindered by any abnormality that prevents the brain from receiving a clear, similar image from each eye, due to decreased vision (e.g. amblyopia), or due to misalignment of the two eyes (strabismus or squint) in infancy and early childhood. Currently, practice patte…
