Marks' editorial is welcome in that is suggests common treatment approaches for chemical and behavioural addictions, namely, exposure and relapse prevention. There are other common features of addictive substances or activities which may explain their addictive potential: they act as operant reinforcers and as Pavlovian unconditioned stimuli, tolerance develops, an initial positive mood is followed by dysphoria and addictions are stimulated by common states (arousal, stress, pain). Most of Marks' features are not unique to addictions but apply to primary drive states (normal eating, sleeping,

This article addresses some of the issues that arise when chemically dependent patients with coexisting psychiatric disorders require medication. A history of chemical dependence may alter prescribing practices, as certain medications may have a higher abuse potential or may enhance the danger of relapse to the primary drug of abuse. Recovering patients have complex attitudes and feelings toward medications that need to be explored, particularly as they affect compliance with prescribed regimens. Issues arising in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, and attention deficit disorders

Depression, anxiety, and delirium have been associated with metrizamide myelography. The authors report a patient who developed an organic affective disorder with manic symptoms several hours after metrizamide myelography.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have documented links between peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and mood and anxiety disorders among adults in the community. Several substance use disorders (e.g., nicotine and alcohol dependence) are highly comorbid with mood/anxiety disorders and have been also linked with PUD. No previous study has examined the potentially explanatory role of substance use disorders in the link between mood and anxiety disorders and PUD. The objective of the study is to examine relationships between a range of mental disorders and PUD among adults in the United States and to examine th

This article examines the extent to which studies of alcohol abuse, illicit drug use, and prescription drug abuse among older adults appear in the leading gerontological and substance abuse journals. The authors reviewed articles published in the 10 social science gerontological journals and the 10 social science substance abuse journals with the highest 5-year impact factors in PubMed from 2000 to 2010. Articles were selected that presented original research on alcohol, substance, or prescription abuse with older adults aged 50 and older; and were identified through aging and substance abuse-

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are rising in the general population and also in the transplant population. Alcohol use disorder leading to alcohol-associated liver disease is the most common of all SUDs in the liver transplantation setting. Uncontrolled SUDs and relapse after transplant can lead to graft loss and mortality, as well as reduce quality of life and patient functioning. SUDs can be treated effectively through integrated, interprofessional management by addiction and medical/surgical professional members of the transplant team. Teams should be aware of pitfalls in interprofessional

BACKGROUND: In order to address the lack of manualized treatment programs for adolescents with substance use disorders (SUDs), we developed a manualized group intervention (DELTA). DELTA focusses on substance use reduction and abstinence as well as alleviation of SUD symptoms via additional modules for co-occurring disorders. The goal of this exploratory trial was to assess if DELTA can be conducted in adolescent SUD patients and if participation is related to reductions in substance use, SUD-related problems, and further psychopathologies.
METHOD: We recruited adolescents at a psychiatric ou

Substance abuse remains a major concern in pregnancy. The current review summarizes the best available literature on the subject. The findings of most studies are confounded by multiple drug use and environmental and social factors that by themselves are known to adversely affect the pregnancy outcomes of interest. Overall, however, substance abuse during pregnancy was associated with negative effects on birth weight and head circumference.

BACKGROUND: The children of parents who abuse alcohol typically show reduced amplitude of the P3 event-related potential wave. We determined if this effect was present in a population-based sample of older adolescent boys, whether it was associated with paternal antisocial personality and drug use, and whether it appeared in youth with childhood externalizing and substance use disorders.
METHODS: A statewide sample of 502 male youth, identified from Minnesota birth records as members of twin pairs, had their P3 amplitude measured, using a visual oddball paradigm when they were approximately 1
