Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare genetic myopathy whose hallmark is rise in body temperature. This hypermetabolic state is triggered by inhalational anesthetics and/or depolarizing muscle relaxants such as succinylcholine. Even the use of dantrolene may not be protective against the hypermetabolic crisis. BACKGROUND: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, life-threatening disorder of calcium homeostasis in skeletal muscle cells that is triggered by volatile anesthetics and succinylcholine, leading to a hypermetabolic reaction. The ability of intrathecal morphine (ITM) to reduce post-thoracotomy pain and meperidine requirements was investigated. Thirty adult patients scheduled for thoracic surgery were studied. A survey has been carried out amongst the UK based members of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland regarding their practice of premedication. Ninety-three per cent of respondents (reply rate 51.7%) used sedative-hypnotic premedication routinely in adults and 84% in children. Muscle damage induced by suxamethonium, and the influence of halothane on it, has been examined by measuring the efflux of creatine kinase (CK) in the biventer cervicis muscle of the chick.
