High chrome exhaustion in a non-float tanning process using a sulphonic aromatic acid.

Tanning processes performed in drums consume large amounts of water and chemicals, most of which end up in the wastewater. This study explores an alternative approach at an industrial scale to the traditional pickle-chrome tanning method. The new method replaces formic and sulphuric acids with sulphonic aromatic acid. Because it is done without float, there is a sizeable reduction in the amount of added salt and chrome salt as well as an increase in temperatures at the end of the tanning process. From an environmental perspective, the new method offers important advantages. For instance, there

Nutritional qualities and antioxidant activity of Pleurotus floridanus grown on composted peach sawdust substrate with different composting time.

Recently, composting cultivation method is widely used in oyster mushroom production. In this study, we focused on the effects of composting processes on nutritional qualities and antioxidant activity of Pleurotus floridanus mushroom fruiting bodies. Three treatments of different composting time (2, 4, and 5 days) were performed with an atmospheric sterilization treatment as the control. The results showed that the pH value, total carbon content, and total nitrogen content of substrate were critical parameters which would significantly affect mushroom qualities and bioactivities. Fruiting bodi

Degradation of 125I-glucagon, -pancreatic polypeptide and -insulin by acid saline extract of rat submaxillary gland and their protection by proteinase inhibitors.

The acid saline extract (ASE) of rat submaxillary gland exerts a powerful degrading effect on 125I-glucagon. In order to study the degradation of other 125I-peptides by ASE and the effects of their inhibitors, 125I-pancreatic polypeptide (PP) and 125I-insulin were used together with 125I-glucagon. The degradation studies were done by the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) method or gel filtration. Besides 125I-glucagon, 125I-PP was found to be destroyed by ASE in the ordinary immunoassay system using the TCA method, but 125I-insulin was intact in the presence of ASE. Leupeptin, and to a lesser extent

Longitudinal analysis reveals early-pregnancy associations between perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and thyroid hormone status in a Canadian prospective birth cohort.

Serum perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have been linked to disruption of maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis, but results have varied between studies which we hypothesized was due to timing of the thyroid hormone measurements, variability in PFAA isomer patterns, or presence of other stressors. In a longitudinal study design, we investigated the time-dependency of associations between PFAA isomers and thyroid hormones during pregnancy and post-partum while considering thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) status and mercury (Hg) co-exposure. In participants of a prospective Canadian birth cohort (n

A stable and visualized fatty acid-based phase transition material constructed by solid-phase molecular self-assembly for thermal management.

Fatty acids are excellent thermal management materials for thermal storage, release and preventing thermal runaway. However, the leakage of fatty acids leads to instability and prevents their application in thermal management. Herein, a stable and visualized fatty acid-based phase transition material P-S/PA was constructed through solid-state molecular self-assembly strategy from polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA), sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and palmitic acid (PA). The electrostatic interaction between PDDA and SDBS and hydrophobic interaction between PA and SDBS can prev

5,5'-Methylenedisalicylic Acid Derivatives as Inhibitors of the Protein Phosphatase CppA in Chlamydia trachomatis.

A structure-based designed library of new 5,5'-methylenedisalicylic acid (MDSA) derivatives were synthesized as a functional core and explored for their antibacterial activity against Chlamydia trachomatis. Various well-established reactions such as amide coupling, basic ester hydrolysis, phosphorylation, sulfonation, acetylation, and hydrogenation reactions were utilized to tune or substitute the carboxylic acid and phenolic groups of MDSA, converting them into amide, ester, phosphoryl, sulfonyl, and acetyl functionalities. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical derivatives were prepared and subse

Structural characterization of Cd²⁺ complexes in solution with DMSA and DMPS.

Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonic acid (DMPS) are chelating agents which have been used clinically to treat patients suffering from Pb(2+) or Hg(2+) exposure. Cd(2+) is a related environmental pollutant that is of increasing public health concern due to a demonstrated dose-response between urinary Cd level and an increased risk of diabetes. However, therapeutically effective chelating agents which enhance the excretion of Cd(2+) from humans have yet to be identified. Here we present a structural characterization of complexes of DMSA and DMPS with Cd(2

Microwave assisted catalytic wet air oxidation of H-acid in aqueous solution under the atmospheric pressure using activated carbon as catalyst.

Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) is a promising method for the treatment of heavily contaminated wastewater. However, its application is restricted due to severe operation conditions (high pressure and high temperature). A microwave (MW) assisted oxidation method was investigated aiming to treat heavily contaminated wastewater under milder conditions. H-acid (1-amino-8-naphthol-3, 6-disulfonic acid) was selected as target compound to evaluate the performance of this novel process. The removal of H-acid and TOC (total organic carbon) for H-acid solution of 3000 mg/L reached as high as 92.6% i

2-Amino-6-nitro-1,3-benzo-thia-zol-3-ium 3-carb-oxy-4-hy-droxy-benzene-1-sulfonate.

In the title salt, C7H6N3O2S+·C7H5O6S-, the cation is protonated at the thia-zole N atom and the dihedral angle between the nitro group and its attached benzene ring is 3.6 (4)°. In the anion, the sulfonate group is deprotonated and the dihedral angle between the carb-oxy-lic acid grouping and its attached ring is 7.1 (4)° and an intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, cation-to-anion N-H⋯O and anion-to-anion O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the component ions into (101) sheets. Aromatic π-π stacking and weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯S inter-actions also occur.

Thyroid Peroxidase Activity is Inhibited by Phenolic Compounds-Impact of Interaction.

The aim of this study was to estimate the mode of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) inhibition by polyphenols: Chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, quercetin, and rutin. All the tested polyphenols inhibited TPO; the IC50 values ranged from 0.004 mM to 1.44 mM (for rosmarinic acid and rutin, respectively). All these pure phytochemical substances exhibited different modes of TPO inhibition. Rutin and rosmarinic acid showed competitive, quercetin-uncompetitive and chlorogenic acid-noncompetitive inhibition effect on TPO. Homology modeling was used to gain insight into the 3D structure of TPO and molecular d

[Risk analysis of serum chemical residues for metabolic associated fatty liver disease based on exposome-lipidome wide association study].

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a common liver disease with a prevalence of up to 25%; it not only adversely affects human health but also aggravates the economic burden of society. An increasing number of studies have suggested that the occurrence of chronic noncommunicable diseases is affected by both environmental exposures and genetic factors. Research has also shown that environmental pollution may increase the risk of MAFLD and promote its occurrence and development. However, the relationship between these concepts, as well as the underlying exposure effects and mecha

Perfluoroalkyl substances exposure and hearing impairment in US adults.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely applied in consumer and industrial products such as nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging materials, and fire-fighting foams. These "forever chemicals" are hypothesized to impact neurobehavioral functions. Yet no previous study has explored the role of PFAS on audiometrically determined hearing impairment (HI). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations of serum concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances with low-frequency HI (LFHI) and high-frequency HI (HFHI) in US adults. METHODS: We evaluated the cross-s

Cysteine 66 in human butyrylcholinesterase is not free, but is blocked by a variety of sulfhydryl reactive molecules.

The 340 kDa butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) tetramer in human plasma is best known for its protective role against the toxic effects of organophosphorus pesticides and nerve agents. Each subunit is stabilized by 3 internal disulfide bridges plus one disulfide bridge between 2 subunits. These disulfide bridges account for 7 of the 8 cysteines known to be in BChE, leaving 1 cysteine that appears to be free. A free cysteine could disrupt structure and function by disulfide interchange. However, mass spectrometry analysis of purified human plasma BChE shows that the potentially free Cys66 is not free

Multifunctional Flame-Retardant, Thermal Insulation, and Antimicrobial Wood-Based Composites.

Wood has been used in a variety of applications in our daily lives and military industry. Nevertheless, its flammability causes potential fire risks and hazards. Improving the flame retardancy of wood is a challenging task. Herein, a phytic acid-based flame retardant (referred to as AMPA) was synthesized based on supramolecular reactions between melamine and p-amino-benzene sulfonic acid followed by a reaction with phytic acid using deionized water as the solvent. A composite wood was prepared by removing lignin to tailor the unique mesoporous structure of the material, followed by coating AMP
