Color constancy refers to our ability to distinguish changes in surface properties from changes in the properties of light illuminating the scene. The apparent ease with which we can tell that objects do not change in their surface properties, for example, when moving from sunlight to the shade, belies the complexity of solving this ill-constrained problem. Although there is a substantial body of work testing which image cues might be used to accomplish this, there is surprisingly little known about how the brain performs this computation. Here, we tested a fundamental aspect of the perceptual…

The visual appearances of surfaces are influenced by their colour and texture. Although the creation and tuning of structural colours has been realized with nanostructures1,2, achieving dynamic control over visual texture3,4 remains challenging. Inspired by dynamic modulation of cephalopod skin5,6, we develop polymer films with programmable surface textures. We bring these textures to life through immersion in different liquids that cause reversible local swelling/contraction to a degree that is determined by electron-beam irradiation. We show how standard electron-beam patterning tools can sp

This article presents the concept of using a functionalised siloxane compound HOL9 with amphiphilic properties as a coating for cement composites to enhance their antifouling properties against algae. The biological properties of the compound were assessed based on its ability to inhibit chlorophyll fluorescence intensity, which is used as an indicator of photosynthetic activity and biofilm development. The greatest decrease in algal photosynthetic activity was observed for a 10% aqueous solution of HOL9 applied by painting. In these conditions, the maximum chlFI value decreased by 97.6%. In a

Marine corrosion and biofouling significantly compromise the safety and durability of marine infrastructures. Biofilms on submerged structures exhibit a dual nature, providing physical barrier protection while potentially exacerbating corrosion. Conventional protective strategies relying on biocidal and physical barrier mechanisms are often limited by the burst release of antifouling agents, which undermines biofilm protection and accelerates corrosion, thereby reducing coating longevity and environmental compatibility. To address this challenge in marine coating engineering, we developed a DC

The integration of nanoscale hybridization between inorganic components and biopolymers, and the formation of hierarchical porous structures capable of efficiently including and activating cells and proteins, has not yet been achieved in the design of bone substitutes for tissue regeneration. We fabricated a porous nanohybrid membrane based on hyaluronic acid (HyAc) and citric acid-coordinated apatite nanoparticles (Cit/ApNPs) and proposed a scaffold material design that integrates a dense nanohybrid structure with a hierarchical porous structure. Specifically, the network structure of HyAc mo

The endothelialization of organ-on-chip platforms and vascular implants is often limited by slow cell attachment and unstable monolayer formation. This work presents a scalable workflow that imprints micro- and nano-gratings into elastin-like recombinamer (ELR)-based hydrogels, enabling rapid endothelial cell capture and accelerating monolayer formation within 14 days. Three gelatin-ELR formulations are engineered, with 1H-NMR confirming incorporation of sequences designed to modulate bioactivity (ELR1: inert, ELR2: uPA-responsive, ELR3: RGD-adhesive). ELR incorporation generates fibrillar mic

Biotin-avidin ligation represents the strongest known noncovalent protein-ligand interaction, serving as a cornerstone for high-affinity biosensing. However, the inherent tendency of biotin to promote nonspecific adsorption often compromises the sensitivity and reproducibility of such platforms. Silatranes have emerged as superior building blocks for surface functionalization of such biosensing platforms, offering enhanced hydrolytic stability, processability, and tunable silanization kinetics mediated by the internal transannular N→Si dative bond. In this work, we report the first synthesis o

Bacteria often swim in complex environments where surfaces are ubiquitous and rarely flat. Surface topography and curvature can strongly affect bacterial motility, with important consequences for surface exploration, adhesion, and biofilm formation. Here, we investigate the swimming of a non-tumbling Escherichia coli bacterium near an undulating no-slip surface using hydrodynamic simulations of a detailed model bacterium. The latter is described by a rigid spherocylindrical cell body and flexible flagella modeled with the Kirchhoff rod theory, while the surrounding fluid is simulated using the

BACKGROUND: Reusable stainless-steel medical devices are subjected to repeated cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization processes that may progressively alter surface properties, potentially affecting durability, and clinical performance.
METHODS: The long-term effects of up to 1000 processing cycles were investigated on AISI 420 (American Iron and Steel Institute grade 420) stainless steel samples with two surface preparations: mechanically brushed (MB) and glass bead -blasted (GBB). Surface roughness (Ra, Sa, Sq), wettability (contact angle), microhardness, and surface morphology were eval…

Although the high surface area-to-volume ratio of the artificial lung fiber bundle enhances gas exchange, the large surface area, dense arrangement, and surface chemistries of the fibers are major contributors to thrombosis. To mitigate this, it is essential to uniformly modify the surface chemistries to effectively reduce non-specific protein fouling, which can help limit thrombosis and lower the risk of thromboembolism or bleeding caused by systemic anticoagulants. In this study, we explored the application and antifouling properties of zwitterionic polymer grafts on polypropylene fiber bund

The adsorption of fibrinogen on biomaterial surfaces, particularly polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), plays a key role in foreign body reactions and has recently been shown to be one of the main factors driving catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Yet, despite detailed studies on the fibrinogen's solution and crystal structures, its behavior at material interfaces is less understood. Using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and structural modeling, we determined the binding pose and conformation of human fibrinogen at the PDMS-buffer interface. Fibrinogen adopts an upright

Recent advancements in surface engineering have redefined the design of biomaterial implants, offering new strategies for controlling the immune response and improving device performance. In this review, we examine an array of approaches for modulating the host's foreign body response through surface modifications, including topographical alterations, mechanical tuning, and chemical modification. We detail how these strategies influence cell adhesion, protein adsorption, and macrophage behavior, ultimately reducing the level of fibrosis. Special focus is placed in this review on two principal

This study investigates the fabrication of large-area, highly-ordered monolayers of PbTe quantum dots (QDs) on TiO2/ITO substrate, using a fast, simple, and repeatable spin-coating technique. For the first time, a real monolayer (a layer with the height of a single QD) covering approximately 3 cm2 was successfully prepared, achieving a root-mean-square roughness (Rq) of 1.37 nm. The research systematically explores key parameters such as QD morphology, concentration, spin-coating conditions, substrate characteristics, wetting properties, and solvent effects to optimize thin film deposition. Rose petals have been recognised for their superhydrophobicity and strong adhesion, a phenomenon known as the petal effect. This phenomenon has been leveraged to engineer surfaces through biomimetics. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the tactile qualities of rose petals. This research explores the thermo-haptic properties of rose petals using a combination of material testing methods, including the measurement of roughness, tactile perception, texture, compliance, and thermal properties. Except for compliance and thermal percepts, tactile properties varied between the adaxial (fro

Despite widespread use of SnO2-based conductometric gas sensors, the sensing of NO2 remains poorly described on the atomic scale, limiting the design of next-generation sensors. Here, near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with in situ resistance measurement was used to investigate the interaction between NO2 and a SnO2-based sensor at room temperature and 300 °C. Through stepwise exposure and evacuation cycles, we tracked real-time changes in the O/Sn atomic ratio and electronic structure alongside the macroscopic resistance response. Exposure to NO2 consistently incr

Microbial therapies have promising applications in the treatment of a broad range of diseases. However, effective colonization of the target region by therapeutic microorganisms remains a significant challenge owing to the complexity of the intestinal system. Here, we developed surface nanocoating-based universal platform (SNUP), which enabled the manipulation of controlled release and targeted colonization of therapeutic microbes in the digestive tract without the utilization of any targeting molecules. The system controlled the decomposition time of SNUP in the gut by regulating different mo

HYPOTHESIS: Sphingomyelin (SPM), a crucial phospholipid in the myelin sheath, plays a vital role in insulating nerve fibers. We hypothesize that iron ions selectively bind to the phosphatidylcholine (PC) template within the SPM membrane under near-physiological conditions, resulting in disruptions to membrane organization. These interactions could potentially contribute to the degradation of the myelin sheath, thereby playing a role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
EXPERIMENTS: We utilized synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques to study the interactio

BACKGROUND: The osseointegration of zirconia implants has been evaluated based on their implant fixture bonding with the alveolar bone at the optical microscopic level. Achieving nano-level bonding between zirconia and bone apatite is crucial for superior osseointegration; however, only a few studies have investigated nanoscale bonding. This review outlines zirconia osseointegration, including surface modification, and presents an evaluation of nanoscale zirconia-apatite bonding and its structure.
HIGHLIGHT: Assuming osseointegration, the cells produced calcium salts on a ceria-stabilized zir

Surface gel layers on commercially available contact lenses have been shown to reduce frictional shear stresses and mitigate damage during sliding contact with fragile epithelial cell layers in vitro. Spencer and co-workers recently demonstrated that surface gel layers could arise from oxygen-inhibited free-radical polymerization. In this study, polyacrylamide hydrogel shell probes (7.5 wt % acrylamide, 0.3 wt % N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) were polymerized in three hemispherical molds listed in order of decreasing surface energy and increasing oxygen permeability: borosilicate glass, polyethe
