Toxic shock syndrome in plastic surgery patients: case report and review of the literature.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rapidly developing disease, which may be lethal if not recognized and treated early. TSS unrelated to menstruation comprises an increasing proportion of the cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control during recent years, and a review of the literature reveals that TSS has is reported with increasing frequency in plastic surgical patients as well. The majority of reports relates to aesthetic plastic surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, augmentation mammaplasty liposuction, and chemical peeling, but cases of TSS following reconstructive breast surgery w

[Plastic surgery of the thoracic wall (malformations and tumors) using a sliding splint-stapler].

Chest wall instability, created surgically by correction of a chest deformity (funnel chest or, more rarely, pigeon chest) or by resection of a tumour of the chest wall, is serious as it can jeopardize the immediate vital prognosis because of paradoxical respiration and, in the long term, the functional and aesthetic prognosis due to progressive impaction of the unstable segment of the wall. The polyvalent and adaptable material which we have developed (sliding splint-staple) and which we also use in thoracic traumatology (thoracic flaps), has allowed us to perform audacious corrections for de

Beyond the scalpel: humanistic training and professional identity formation in postgraduate plastic surgery education.

OBJECTIVE: Postgraduate plastic surgery education has traditionally emphasized anatomical knowledge, operative technique, aesthetic judgment, and procedural competence. However, plastic surgery practice is also shaped by aesthetic expectations, body image concerns, psychosocial vulnerability, medico-legal risk, and commercialized doctor-patient relationships. These tensions suggest that technical training alone is insufficient for preparing trainees to manage the humanistic challenges of contemporary plastic surgery. This study aimed to develop a Professional Identity Formation (PIF)-based hum

Preoperative Screening for Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Facial Plastic Surgery: Protocol Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is characterized by recurrent thoughts related to one or more perceived defects in physical appearance, which are either nonexistent or minimal to others, leading to emotional distress and impairments in social, occupational, and emotional functioning. The prevalence of BDD among individuals seeking plastic surgery is significantly higher than in the general population. It is therefore essential for plastic surgeons to identify individuals at greater risk for BDD. Several questionnaires are available for this purpose, typically administered by mental

Autologous Versus Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction: Insights From Recent Oncologic and Plastic Surgery Guidelines.

Mastectomy rates remain high in the management of breast cancer, which reflects the evolution of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction into a critical component of multidisciplinary care. The two primary methods for breast reconstruction consist of using the patient's own tissue (autologous) and implant-based procedures. The selection between the two procedures depends on three main factors, which include oncological requirements, surgical risk, and patient preferences. This article aims to synthesize recent clinical guidelines and literature to provide an evidence-based comparison of these su

Chronic Lower Extremity Wounds: Updates on Lower Extremity Reconstruction in Clinics in Plastic Surgery.

Chronic lower extremity (LE) wounds represent a growing source of morbidity, limb loss, and health care expenditure, driven by rising rates of diabetes, vascular disease, and advanced age. Effective management requires a comprehensive understanding of underlying wound pathophysiology, etiology, and patient risk factors. This article reviews the assessment and multidisciplinary management of chronic LE wounds, emphasizing infection control, vascular optimization, and biomechanical correction. Institutional outcomes using a coordinated "vasculoplastic" approach demonstrate that complex limb salv

Nanofat in Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review of Clinical Outcomes, Safety, and Emerging Applications.

BACKGROUND: The beauty industry has seen a shift in standards, with patients increasingly favoring natural and subtle enhancements over dramatic cosmetic changes. In this evolving landscape, nanofat has emerged as a promising tool to plastic surgeons due to its regenerative potential and biocompatibility. Despite its growing popularity, hesitancy regarding its efficacy and side effects persists. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted in December 2024 following PRISMA guidelines. Databases searched included PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library da

Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Plastic Surgery Unit at a Hospital: Recurrence and Metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most prevalent cancer in the world with a worldwide increase of 310% from 1997 to 2017. The prognosis is usually good; however, metastases occur in up to 5% and are linked to high mortality rates. Even though the risk of metastasis and death is low, the mortality now exceeds that of melanoma. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate the latest tendencies of SCC regarding recurrence and metastasis. METHODS: The study was a retrospective, single-centre, cohort study of patients in Central Denmark Region. The purpose was to evaluate all patient

Granulomatous mastitis a little known pathology in plastic surgery: Case report and literature review.

Granulomatous mastitis is an unknown disease for the plastic surgeon, it is frequent, benign and can be confused with an infectious process and its importance lies in the fact that it can occur after surgery. Its diagnosis is clinical, presenting an indurated region in the breast, which can progress to abscesses or crypts, as well as radiological and histological. We present the case of a 57-year-old patient who presented with a lesion 1 month after a reduction mammoplasty. Conservative treatment was carried out with the possibility of fat necrosis and due to persistence, granulomatous mastiti

Six Evidence-based Recommendations for Perioperative Incisional Care in Plastic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review examined the current evidence-based practices for perioperative incisional care in class 1 clean wounds within plastic surgery. Despite the critical role of incisional care in preventing surgical site infections and optimizing aesthetic outcomes, clinical practice remains highly variable due to the absence of specialty-specific guidelines and conflicting recommendations from major health organizations. To address this gap, the review synthesized findings from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and institutional guidelines, including those fro
