BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is the definitive surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis and a nationwide study has suggested that cultural and socioeconomic factors play a role in the numbers of operations performed. Thus, there is a need to evaluate local data in order to understand the local epidemiology and trends in hyperhidrosis treatment.

Ross syndrome is characterized by a triad of tonic pupil, areflexia and segmental hypohidrosis. Hypohidrosis may be accompanied by contralateral hyperhidrosis, probably due to a compensatory mechanism. We report a case of Ross syndrome with socially disabling left-sided hyperhidrosis. Sympathectomy of the second and third thoracic ganglia was performed with satisfactory results. With excellent results in primary hyperhidrosis and very low morbidity, thoracic sympathectomy is the definitive treatment for hyperhidrosis.

64 patients operated on the reason of complex regional hand pain syndrome were examined with the use of laser spectral Doppler flowmetry and thermography. 33 patients had thoracoscopic Th3 ganglion clipation; 16 patients had brachial artery and vein perivascular sympathectomy; 15 patients periarterial sympathectomy on the level of brachial artery. Desympathisation (microcirculatory hemodynamic improvement and trophotropic microcirculation regulatory changes) was mostly apparent after thoracoscopic clipation and perivascular desympatisation in comparison with isolated periarterial sympatectomy.

Compensatory sweating (CS) is the most common and disabling complication of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy and represents an unmet clinical challenge. Our surgical hypothesis is to generate a parallel pathway to the damaged part of the sympathetic nerve, similar to the Kuntz nerve, by reconstructing the 2 healthy intercostal nerves, thus treating CS. Here, we present a novel videothoracoscopic technique involving bilateral intercostal nerve reconstruction in patients with severe CS after endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.

BACKGROUND: Facial hyperhidrosis is a disease that may lead patients to serious emotional disturbances. Video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy provides excellent resolution of facial hyperhidrosis, but is associated with certain complications. Twelve patients (15 hands) with documented scleroderma and chronic nonhealing digital ulcers were followed for their response to nonoperative and operative treatment. The mitotic rates in the crypts of Lieberkühn of the proximal jejunum and descending colon of mouse, following different treatments, were measured using a stathmokinetic technique.
