Taenia solium is the aetiological agent of taeniasis/cysticercosis, one of the most severe neglected tropical diseases (NTD) according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The life cycle of T. solium alternates between pigs (intermediate host) and humans (definitive host). In addition, humans can act as accidental intermediate hosts if they ingest infective eggs. In this case, the most severe condition of the disease occurs when parasites invade the central nervous system, causing neurocysticercosis (NCC). The complexity of the life cycle of T. solium imposes a barrier to study this pathoge…

Although oxfendazole (OFZ) is a well know broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic, the assessment of its potential trematodicidal activity remains unexplored. OFZ administration at single high doses has been recommended to control Taenia solium cysticercus in pigs. The current study investigated the flukicidal activity obtained after a single high (30mg/kg) oral dose of OFZ in pigs harbouring a natural Fasciola hepatica infection. Sixteen (16) local ecotype pigs were randomly allocated into two (2) experimental groups of 8 animals each named as follow: Untreated control and OFZ treated, in w

The soil and water runoff from the livestock facilities are potentially dangerous for the infection of animal with eggs Taeniarhynchus saginatus. The complex antihelminthic measures and the basis of sanitary and parasitological model of prevention of parasitic diseases of humans and animals in Kabardino-Balkaria allowed within 3-4 years to diminish the contamination of soil with cestode eggs in 4-4.8 times. EGAT drug concentration of 50% and exposure in the range 1-20 days in a clean slurry causes the death to 47% of the eggs T. saginatus, in soil--up to 52% sewage sludge--45% in sewage--49%,

Tapeworm eggs from the genus Taenia sp. were identified during the study of mummy remains dated to 2,286 ± 28 BP from the Chehrabad salt mine in northwestern Iran. The presence of tapeworm in this salt mine provides paleopathological information. Moreover, it brings new information on ancient diet, indicating the consumption of raw or undercooked meat. Cultural aspects as well as archaeozoological data are discussed in order to try to detail meat consumption. Paleoparasitological data are rare in the Middle East, and this case study presents the first recovery of parasites in ancient Iran. It

For the first time, a palaeoparasitological study was performed on 12 mummies from a Christian cemetery excavated in El-Deir, Oasis of Kharga, Egypt. The analysis revealed the presence of a tapeworm, probably Taenia sp., in a single individual. The presence of just the presumed taeniid egg is surprising and raises the question of the relationship between residents of Egyptian oases and those residing in the Nile Valley. The result suggests information on the health status of the ancient oasis population and re-enforces a hypothesis regarding possible social stratification of the inhabitants. T

Taenia solium causes human neurocysticercosis, a public health problem in Mexico and other developing countries. Surprisingly, tapeworm carriers are very rarely found and in necropsy studies practically no tapeworms have been reported. In this paper we analyze the possibility that, after the death of the host, tapeworms could easily be destroyed in the intestine. Our experiments, performed in the hamster model, suggest that the absence of tapeworms in human intestine during necropsy is not due to postmortem digestion.

While striving to serve the needs of the international biomedical community of today, we would also like to remember JMM's long past as a venue for medical research. JMM is the successor to the Berlin Clinical Weekly (Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift), established in 1864. Below are excerpts from the Berlin Clinical Weekly's May issue from a hundred and thirty-five years ago, giving hints about the challenges and solutions being addressed by medical research of the time. Following the excerpt is a commentary by Martin Zeitz and Thomas Schneider, experts in gastroenterology at the University Cl

AIM: To investigate the aetiology, species and epidemiological factors of Taenia infection in a pilot area of Lanping County, Yunnan Province.
METHODS: Two patients with taeniasis were treated with antiscolex capsule and praziquantel, respectively. Five local weaning pigs free from tapeworm infection were fed with gravid proglottids obtained from the patients. After 2-3 months, the pigs were necropsied to examine cysticerci. In addition, one pig naturally infected with Taenia was treated as well.
RESULTS: Based on morphological characteristics of the scolex and gravid proglottid of four tape…

Of 5,404 domestic dogs examined for normal and abnormal Taenia pisiformis in Cairo, Egypt, one dog contained 3 triradiate specimens while 3,569 harboured one or more normal cestodes. The study revealed a ratio of one triradiate to 5,620 normal adult worms in the parasite population and a prevalence of 0.02% for the triradiate forms. Polyradiate forms are far less common in this large survey than has been indicated in previous reports.

The infectivity of Taenia saginata eggs exposed to environmental conditions on a natural soil surface in Denmark was studied by feeding the eggs to susceptible calves, followed by determination of the number of cysts developed. The results indicated that a small proportion of the eggs remained infective for 6 1/2 months, but not for 9 1/2 months when deposited in May 1986, and for 5 1/2 months but not for 8 1/2 months when deposited in September 1987. Viability of eggs was tested in vitro and compared with infectivity obtained in calves.
