Integration of Eye-Centered and Landmark-Centered Codes in Frontal Eye Field Gaze Responses.

The visual system is thought to separate egocentric and allocentric representations, but behavioral experiments show that these codes are optimally integrated to influence goal-directed movements. To test if frontal cortex participates in this integration, we recorded primate frontal eye field activity during a cue-conflict memory delay saccade task. To dissociate egocentric and allocentric coordinates, we surreptitiously shifted a visual landmark during the delay period, causing saccades to deviate by 37% in the same direction. To assess the cellular mechanisms, we fit neural response fields

Timing and Intertemporal Choice Behavior in the Valproic Acid Rat Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Recently it has been proposed that impairments related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may reflect a more fundamental disruption in time perception. Here, we examined whether in utero exposure to valproic acid (VPA) can generate specific behavioral deficits related to ASD and time perception. Pups from control and VPA groups were tested using fixed-interval (FI) temporal bisection, peak interval, and intertemporal choice tasks. In addition, the rats were assessed on motor function, perseverative and exploratory behavior, anxiety, and memory. The VPA group displayed a leftward shift in timing

Work-related health issues among pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Pharmacists are at high risk of infection due to their direct contact with potentially infected patients and customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine whether increased health issues among pharmacists during the pandemic were associated with pandemic-related changes in their work environment. A total of 438 pharmacists from 28 prefectures completed a self-administered survey between September 2021 and January 2022. Health issues with significant increases among pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic included depression, anxiety or emotional disorders, insomnia, eye

[Selective visual attention and simultanagnosia].

The parietal lobe is an important key station in the network for selective attention. We found that spontaneous shift of visual attention, depending on task requirement, was impaired by parietal lobe lesions and confirmed the relationship between parietal lobes and visual attention with cortical electric stimulation. Patient 1. A 52-year-old, right-handed carpenter with a diagnosis of 'visual form' of Alzheimer disease showed marked kanji (logogram) agraphia and constructional impairment. Cerebral atrophy and hypoperfusion were observed in bilateral parietal lobes. He showed preserved form and

Auditory and visual stream segregation in children and adults: an assessment of the amodality assumption of the 'sluggish attentional shifting' theory of dyslexia.

Among the hypotheses relating dyslexia to a temporal processing disorder, Hari and Renvall (Hari, R., Renvall, H., 2001. Impaired processing of rapid stimulus sequences in dyslexia. Trends. Cognit. Sci. 5, 525-532.) argued that dyslexic individuals would show difficulties at an attentional level, through sluggish attentional shifting (SAS) in all sensory modalities. However, the amodality assumption of the SAS theory was never straightforwardly assessed in the same group of dyslexic participants using similar paradigms in both the visual and auditory modalities. Here, the attentional sequentia

Evidence for disruption in prefrontal cortical functions in juvenile bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Systematic parsing of executive function processes is critical for the development of more specific models of neurobiological processes mediating disturbed cognition in youth with bipolar disorder (BPD). METHODS: A sample of 33 children and adolescents with bipolar I disorder (BPD I) (mean age 12.1 +/- 3.0 years, 39% female) and 44 demographically matched healthy participants (mean age 12.9 +/- 2.8 years, 50% female) completed a neurocognitive battery including measures aimed at detection of disruption in prefrontal cortical circuitry (i.e., working memory, set shifting, and rule

Cortical activity in Parkinson's disease during executive processing depends on striatal involvement.

Patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease exhibit impairments in executive processes, including planning and set-shifting, even at the early stages of the disease. We have recently developed a new card-sorting task to study the specific role of the caudate nucleus in such executive processes and have shown, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in young healthy adults, that the caudate nucleus is specifically required when a set-shift must be planned. Here the same fMRI protocol was used to compare the patterns of activation in a group of early-stage Parkinson's disease patient

Characterization of upper limb use in health care workers during regular shifts: A quantitative approach based on wrist-worn accelerometers.

Despite the high prevalence of upper limb (UL) work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) among health care workers (HCWs), little is known about their relationship with exposure to biomechanical risk factors. This study aimed to assess UL activity features under actual working conditions using two wrist-worn accelerometers. Accelerometric data were processed to obtain duration, intensity, and asymmetry of UL use in 32 HCWs during the execution of commonly performed tasks (e.g., patient hygiene, transfer, and meal distribution) within a regular shift. The results show that such tasks are c

Electromyographic analysis of postural responses during standing leg flexion in adults with hemiparesis.

The purpose of this study was to examine muscle activation patterns during standing leg single leg flexion in adults with hemiparesis. Specifically, the electromyographic activation patterns of the flexing limb biceps femoris and gluteus medius, and the stance limb gluteus medius muscles were analyzed as a function of whether the muscles were paretic or not. Delayed activation of the affected flexing side gluteus medius, as compared with unaffected flexing side gluteus medius, resulted in it being activated simultaneous with the flexing biceps femoris rather than preceding it as was previously

Vicarious function within the human primary motor cortex? A longitudinal fMRI stroke study.

While experimental studies in the monkey have shown that motor recovery after partial destruction of the hand motor cortex was based on adjacent motor reorganization, functional MRI (fMRI) studies with isolated primary motor cortical stroke have not yet been reported in humans. Based on experimental data, we designed a study to test if recovery after stroke within primary motor cortex (M1) was associated with reorganization within the surrounding motor cortex, i.e. the motor cortex was able to vicariate. Since motor recovery is time-dependent and might be inflected according to the tested task

The effectiveness of i-virtual reality and telemedicine based cognitive approach for rehabilitation of prospective memory in individuals with Parkinson's disease and mild cognitive impairment: A randomized-controlled trial.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The ability to perform intended actions after a delay or specific event reflects prospective memory (PM), a multiprocess involving episodic memory and attentional/executive functions. PM difficulties are common in Parkinson's disease patients, especially those with Mild Cognitive Impairment (PD-MCI). This study explores the efficacy of attention/executive function training on PM in PD-MCI patients using a combined immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) and Telemedicine approach. Research Methods/Design: Thirty PD-MCI patients were assessed on PM and attention-executive measures and

Executive Function and Emotion Regulation in Depressive and Anxiety Disorders: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) and emotion regulation (ER) deficits are prevalent in depressive and anxiety disorders, suggesting a transdiagnostic role. Given their role in treatment engagement, symptom reduction, and relapse prevention, we examine EF and ER interrelationships in these disorders. METHODS: Participants (n = 27 depressive/anxiety disorders, n = 27 nonclinical group) underwent psychiatric screening and assessments of symptom severity, EF (set-shifting, response inhibition [RI], working memory [WM], verbal fluency, planning), and ER (severity, strategies, situational ER fol

Acute minocycline treatment inhibits microglia activation, reduces infarct volume, and has domain-specific effects on post-ischemic stroke cognition in rats.

Ischemic stroke affects millions of individuals worldwide and a high prevalence of survivors experience cognitive deficits. At present, the underlying mechanisms that drive post-stroke cognitive decline are not well understood. Microglia play a critical role in the post-stroke inflammatory response, but experimental studies show that an accumulation of chronically activated microglia can be harmful and associates with cognitive impairment. This study assessed the effect of acute post-stroke minocycline treatment on chronic microglia and astrocyte expression within the infarct and remote white

Visual Exploration in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Exploring Age Differences and Dynamic Features Using Recurrence Quantification Analysis.

Eye-tracking studies have demonstrated that individuals with autism spectrum disorder sometimes show differences in attention and gaze patterns. This includes preference for certain nonsocial objects, heightened attention to detail, and more difficulty with attention shifting and disengagement, which may be associated with restricted and repetitive behaviors. This study utilized a visual exploration task and replicates findings of reduced number of objects explored and increased fixation duration on high autism interest objects in a large sample of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (n

Longitudinal changes in the fronto-striatal network are associated with executive dysfunction and behavioral dysregulation in Huntington's disease: 30 months IMAGE-HD data.

Neuropsychiatric disturbance-particularly executive dysfunction and behavioral dysregulation-is a common feature of Huntington's disease (HD), with implications for functional capacity and quality of life. No study to date has ascertained whether longitudinal change in brain activity is associated with neuropsychiatric deficits in HD. We used a set-response-shifting task together with functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate 30-month longitudinal blood-oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal changes in the fronto-striatal attentional control network in premanifest and symptomatic HD (

The prevalence of visual hallucinations in non-affective psychosis, and the role of perception and attention.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about visual hallucinations (VH) in psychosis. We investigated the prevalence and the role of bottom-up and top-down processing in VH. The prevailing view is that VH are probably related to altered top-down processing, rather than to distorted bottom-up processing. Conversely, VH in Parkinson's disease are associated with impaired visual perception and attention, as proposed by the Perception and Attention Deficit (PAD) model. Auditory hallucinations (AH) in psychosis, however, are thought to be related to increased attention. METHOD: Our retrospective database stu

Elderly adults delay proprioceptive reweighting during the anticipation of collision avoidance when standing.

The ability to reweight visual and proprioceptive information is critical for maintaining postural stability in a dynamic environment. In this study, we examined whether visual anticipation of collision avoidance (AV) while standing could facilitate the down-weighting of altered proprioception in young and elderly adults. Twelve young (24.91±6.44years) and 12 elderly (74.8±6.42years) participants stood upright for 180s under two task conditions: (a) quiet stance (QS) and (b) standing while anticipating virtual objects to be avoided. In order to disrupt the accuracy of proprioceptive input part

Hypervigilance and attentional fixedness in chronic musculoskeletal pain: consistency of findings across modified stroop and dot-probe tasks.

UNLABELLED: Results from modified Stroop and dot-probe tasks have provided mixed evidence regarding attentional biases for sensory and affect pain stimuli in chronic pain patients. No studies have compared the same groups of chronic pain and healthy control participants on both tasks. We tested 36 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain and 29 healthy control subjects on the modified Stroop and dot-probe tasks. Stimuli comprised affect pain, sensory pain, physical catastrophe, and neutral words. There was no evidence to suggest differential processing of threat cues by patients and control
