[Domestic ectoparasitoses, a review].

Human parasitic infestations of the skin by mites (Acari) and insects can be divided into permanent and temporary ectoparasitoses. This fact is important for diagnosis and treatment. Permanent ectoparasites are highly adapted to their host, the human being, and live in permanent contact with him. Diagnosis is usually simple and the parasite can be found on the patient. Treatment is by antiparasitic topical medication. In contrast to permanent ectoparasitosis, temporary ectoparasites are not found on the patient. When a bite reaction is perceptible the insect has left its host. The history of t

Parasites of the skin and hair.

Because scratching is nature's treatment for ectoparasites, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any pruritic rash. Usually, the diagnosis is not difficult to make if the clinician suspects an ectoparasitic cause and is familiar with the symptoms and signs of these disorders. The diagnosis is confirmed using a few instruments and basic office supplies. The clinician must treat not only the individual patient but must also consider the source of the infection because others may require treatment. Family and community education about removal of the parasites from the patien

Borrelia, Coxiella, and Rickettsia in Carios capensis (Acari: Argasidae) from a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) rookery in South Carolina, USA.

Argasid ticks are vectors of viral and bacterial agents of humans and animals. Carios capensis, a tick of seabirds, infests the nests of brown pelicans, Pelecanus occidentalis, and other ground nesting birds along the coast of South Carolina. This tick is associated with pelican nest abandonment and could pose a threat to humans visiting pelican rookeries if visitors are exposed to ticks harboring infectious agents. We collected ticks from a pelican rookery on Deveaux Bank, South Carolina and screened 64 individual ticks, six pools of larvae, and an egg mass for DNA from Bartonella, Borrelia,

Studies on the economics of ticks in Zambia.

Two herds of experimental Sanga cattle were maintained under traditional savanna grazing management for three years in the Central Province of Zambia. One herd was kept free of ticks by regular acaricide treatment, while the other was given no tick control. Milk production, growth rate, fertility and mortality were monitored throughout the trial. The tick-free herd performed significantly better than the tick-infested herd, but the value of the additional production was much less than the cost of the acaricide used. It is concluded that there is no economic justification for intensive tick con

Serological exposure of spotted fever group Rickettsia in capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) from urban parks in Campo Grande, Brazilian Midwest.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia of the spotted fever group (SFG) has been reported in ticks and domestic animals in Campo Grande (CG), Midwest Brazil. METHODS: We searched for Rickettsia in the SFG in capybaras and their ticks in an urban park in the CG. RESULTS: The seropositivity rate was 88.2% (15/17). Although 87.7% of the capybaras sampled showed infestations with Amblyomma sculptum, A. dubitatum, and Amblyomma spp., no molecular results were detected in ticks. CONCLUSIONS: Since Rickettsia from the SFG circulates among capybaras in the urban parks of Campo Grande, this large rodent species sho

[Factors that determine the possibility of tick-borne encephalitis infection. 3. The probability of human contact with an infected vector in the central taiga forests of Khabarovsk Territory].

Contacts with Ixodes persulcatus Sch. and the carriers' infestation with encephalitis virus have been studied for many years in middle taiga forests of the Khabarovsk Territory. The results of the studies have been compared. The risk of contacts with ticks invaded with varying virus doses has been assessed. It has been established that clinical forms of the disease develop upon bites of highly infected ticks. The number of such ticks in the natural focus is an important index of its potential danger. This must be taken into consideration as the most important factor of possible infection and u

A new host record of Haemaphysalis semermis (Acari: Ixodidae) from the domestic cat (Felis catus) (Carnivora: Felidae) in Orang Asli village, Pahang National Park Malaysia.

We report the presence of a male Haemaphysalis semermis collected from the domestic cat, Felis catus in an aboriginal village located in Pahang, Malaysia. This paper constitutes a new host record of this tick species, and also the first documentation of the infestation of companion animals other than domestic dogs (Canis lupus) by H. semermis in Malaysia. Additionally, we have included an updated host index of the tick species in Southeast Asia.

Risk factors influencing Coxiella burnetii seropositivity in water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) populations of Egypt's Nile Delta.

This study investigated the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in buffaloes across several governorates in Egypt's Nile Delta. No significant variation was observed between regions (P > 0.05), although the highest prevalence was recorded in Kafr El-Sheikh (15.5%) and the lowest in Menofia (9.1%). While sex was not statistically significant, females showed a higher seroprevalence (12.4%) than males (9%). Age had a significant impact, with buffaloes over 8 years of age showed a higher prevalence (21.6%) compared to the younger age groups. Tick infestation was also significantly associated with

Susceptibility of Rhipicephalus microplus to fluralaner: assessment before and after implementation of a strategic control protocol in taurine cattle in a tropical region.

BACKGROUND: Fluralaner has been used in the strategic control of the Rhipicephalus microplus tick, an important ectoparasite for cattle farming. However, the effects of its application on the susceptibility profiles of these tick populations after treatment have not yet been investigated. In this study, we evaluated the effect of a strategic control protocol with fluralaner on the phenotypic susceptibility profile of a population of R. microplus before and after its implementation. METHODS: Thirty naturally infested cattle were divided into two experimental groups: T01 (control group): cattle

A ticking time bomb hidden in plain sight.

The deer tick transmits nearly half of the known tick-borne pathogens in the United States, and its expanding geographic range increases the risk of human infection. To decrease the abundance of and infection risk from deer ticks, approaches that include vaccines for human use and for animal hosts are desired.

Comprehensive study of ticks and tick-borne diseases in dogs in Nepal: molecular identification, risk analysis and hematological alterations.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are responsible for the transmission of various viral, bacterial, and protozoal pathogens through their mouthparts while feeding on the blood of the host. Owing to the increasing trend of tick-borne diseases, they are considered major emerging public health issues throughout the globe. In South Asia, the major important canine tick-borne pathogens are Babesia spp., Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, and Borrelia burgdorferi. Among various diagnostic tests, molecular techniques are considered the gold standard for the detection of tick-borne diseases. A total

Tick-borne pathogens in Ghana: Emerging threat to animal and human health.

Ticks continue to spread worldwide transmitting pathogens that affect animal production and human health. With the transboundary movement of herdsmen and their livestock through the borders into Ghana, there is likely to be the introduction of new tick species and their associated pathogens. This review provides information on the distribution of livestock ticks and tick-borne pathogens, emphasising the threat to both human and animal health. A search was done using terms about tick-borne pathogens and livestock ticks in Ghana from Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus. This review examined inform

Dog ectoparasites as sentinels for pathogenic Rickettsia and Bartonella in rural Guatemala.

Fleas and ticks serve as vectors of multiple pathogens in the genera Rickettsia and Bartonella that cause diseases in humans and other animals. Although human rickettsiosis and bartonellosis have been reported in all countries in Central America, limited research has been conducted to investigate the natural cycles of flea- and tick-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis, especially in Guatemala. We evaluated dog parasites as sentinels for zoonotic disease risk in rural Guatemala by sampling ticks and fleas from dogs, which were then identified and individually screened for Rickettsia and Barto

[The current status of foci of tick-borne relapsing fever in the western Pamirs].

For the first time in the last 20-50 years foci of tick-borne relapsing fever have been surveyed in the western Pamirs. Settlements in the Piandzha valley were shown to be (as in the 1930s and 1960s) affected by Ornithodoros papillipes Bir., the carrier of the infection. Though the number of ticks is still rather high, it is nowadays considerably reduced. The findings suggest a tendency towards a decrease in the infestation of the carrier population with the agent of the disease. The traditional type of construction (especially widespread in far-off regions), when houses are built in such a wa

Analysis of gaps in feline ectoparasiticide purchases from veterinary clinics in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to examine cat owner ectoparasiticide purchases in the United States and estimate the impact of purchase gaps on timely ectoparasite protection administration. These purchase gaps lead to periods of time when cats are unprotected from ectoparasites. METHODS: Ectoparasiticide purchase transactions for individual cats from 671 U.S. veterinary clinics from January 1, 2017 through June 30, 2019 were evaluated to determine time "gaps" between doses of ectoparasiticides purchased in a defined 12-month period. Ectoparasiticides examined were topically applied prod

Ectoparasites in black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) from the largest reintroduced population of the Conata Basin, South Dakota, USA.

The black-footed ferret, Mustela nigripes, is an endangered carnivore endemic to the grasslands of North America. We present the first investigation of ectoparasites associated with black-footed ferrets since reintroduction. We sampled more than 200 individuals from one of the largest and most successful reintroduced populations located in the Conata Basin of South Dakota, USA. We compared our findings with ectoparasite assemblages of sympatric carnivores and historic ferret records. We collected more than 1,000 ectoparasites consisting mainly of three flea and tick species, two of which were

Acaricide and ivermectin resistance in a field population of Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) collected from red deer (Cervus elaphus) in the Mexican tropics.

In the Neotropics the control of tick infestations in red deer (Cervus elaphus) is achieved primarily through the use of acaricides and macrocyclic lactones. In Mexico, resistance to one or multiple classes of acaricides has been reported in Rhipicephalus microplus infesting cattle, but information on acaricide susceptibility in R. microplus infesting red deer is lacking. In this study we report the level of resistance to different classes of acaricides and ivermectin in R. microplus collected from red deer in the Mexican tropics. Engorged R. microplus females were collected from a red deer fa…
