Evaluation and characterization of facial skin aging using optical coherence tomography.

OBJECTIVES: The skin aging exposome encompasses internal and external factors that contribute to clinical signs of facial aging. Aging skin can be characterized by distinctive features such as wrinkles, lentigines, elastosis, and roughness. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is capable of noninvasively measuring skin characteristics. This study aimed to assess bilateral features using OCT to explore temporal skin changes among decades and potential changes in facial skin aging based on laterality. METHODS: A total of 97 subjects between 20 and 89 years old with Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV

Optical coherence tomography-guided early postoperative management of XEN Gel implant.

This interventional case series demonstrates the usefulness of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in guiding early postoperative management following XEN45 Gel Stent implantation, in conjunction with intraocular pressure (IOP) readings and slit lamp findings. Three primary open-angle glaucoma patients undergoing XEN45 Gel Stent implantation were included. Two patients received early postoperative needling because the IOP was not low enough and AS-OCT revealed that the XEN stent orifice was trapped by the Tenon's capsule. Immediately after needling, the distal tip of the XEN

Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) Visualization of Anterior Vitritis.

The clinical grading of vitreous haze presents some limitations such as subjectivity and intra-grader variability. On the other hand the proposed OCT-based methods only explore the posterior part of the vitreous. Here we describe the inflammatory changes affecting the anterior vitreous imaged by Anterior Segment Optical Coherence, Tomography (AS-OCT) from patients affected by uveitis. The AS-OCT (Anterion, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) detected vitreous sheets, vitreous lacunae, and formations resembling inflammatory cells, providing an objective characterization of the inflamma

Role of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Imaging in Patients with Diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ocular manifestations in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) can present as microvascular changes. These microvascular changes can be challenging to identify on exams, and imaging technologies have commonly aided in the diagnosis and management of patients with DM. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) provides noninvasive image segmentation of various layers of the retina and choroid. Also, post-processing of images and associated quantitative measurements offer potential clinical enhancements. Our aim is to review the current evidence on the utility of OCTA for

Classification of Salivary Gland Tumors Based on Quantitative Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Visual inspection is the primary diagnostic method for oral diseases, and its accuracy of diagnosis mainly depends on surgeons' experience. Histological examination is still the golden standard, but it is invasive and time-consuming. In order to address these issues, as a noninvasive imaging technique, optical coherence tomography (OCT) can differentiate oral tissue with advantages of real-time, in situ, and high resolution. The aim of this study is to explore optimal quantitative parameters in OCT images to distinguish different salivary gland tumors. STUDY DESIGN/

Utilization potential of intraluminal optical coherence tomography for the Eustachian tube.

Imaging the Eustachian tube is challenging because of its complex anatomy and limited accessibility. This study fabricated a fiber-based optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheter and investigated its potential for assessing the Eustachian tube anatomy. A customized OCT system and an imaging catheter, termed the Eustachian OCT, were developed for visualizing the Eustachian tube. Three male swine cadaver heads were used to study OCT image acquisition and for subsequent histologic correlation. The imaging catheter was introduced through the nasopharyngeal opening and reached toward the middle e

Method for parametric imaging of attenuation by intravascular optical coherence tomography.

Catheter-based intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) is a powerful imaging modality for visualization of atherosclerosis with high resolution. Quantitative characterization of various tissue types by attenuation coefficient (AC) extraction has been proven to be a potentially significant application of OCT attenuation imaging. However, existing methods for AC extraction from OCT suffer from the challenge of variability in complex tissue types in IVOCT pullback data such as healthy vessel wall, mixed atherosclerotic plaques, plaques with a single component and stent struts, etc. Thi

Coronary Stent Healing in Cancer Patients-An Optical Coherence Tomography Perspective.

Objective: This study assessed stent healing patterns and cardiovascular outcomes by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cancer patients after drug-eluting stent (DES) placement. Background: Cancer treatment, owing to its cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects, could delay stent healing and increase stent thrombosis risk, especially when dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is discontinued early for oncological treatment. OCT can assess stent endothelialization and other healing parameters, which may provide clinical guidance in these challenging scenarios. Methods: This single-center retrospec
