OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to establish the incidence of Actinomycosis in the tonsils of children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy, and to evaluate its role in clinical tonsillar disease.
METHODS: This was a prospective controlled study done at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa over an 8-month period and included all children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy. All resected tonsils were examined for the presence of Actinomycosis and any signs of significant cryptitis or active tonsillitis. A comparison was made in the incide…

The topography and histologic structure of the various tonsils were studied anatomically and microscopically in 15 sheep aged between 9 and 15 months. The palatine, pharyngeal and paraepiglottic tonsils were readily visible macroscopically. They consisted mainly of secondary lymph nodules and were encapsulated in dense connective tissues. The epithelium covering the tonsils and their crypts was frequently infiltrated heavily by lymphocytes. The tubal tonsil and the tonsil of the soft palate were macroscopically visible after fixation in 2% acetic acid. These tonsils consisted of scattered lymp

Tuberculosis of Tonsil and Oropharynx are almost a forgotten condition now- a- days. Persistent sore throat, ulcer over tonsils and unilateral tonsillar enlargement should arose suspicion of tubercular infection. Confirmation oj which depends on histopathology favouring tuberculosis and /or AFB positivity on tonsillar tissue. Condition is curable with proper Anti- TB treatment with or without tonsillectomy, A case is presented considering its rarity.

The porcine tonsils are a group of lymphoepithelial tissues located at the common openings of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. The tonsils participate in a variety of functions involving innate, cellular and humoral immunity at the local and systemic levels. Among these immunological functions is the continuous surveillance for the presence of foreign antigens at the openings of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Within the pig, the movement of lymphocytes, cytokines and chemotactic molecules from the tonsils to other lymphoid organs confers immunity to other portals of p

Hematogenous spread from carcinoma of tonsil is an uncommon event and skin is an extremely rare site of metastasis. We encountered a 40-year-old male patient who initially presented with carcinoma of the tonsil with T3N2cMO disease and treated by curative radiotherapy. After about 2 years, he developed a skin lesion in the periorbital region which on cytological examination turned out to be metastasis from tonsillar carcinoma. The present paper describes this rare case report along with a brief review of the literature.

Immunoglobulin (Ig) isotype switching is the process whereby B cells initially expressing IgM and/or IgD on their surface switch to other Ig … ominately induced by tonsillar mononuclear cells of IgA nephropathy, compared to those from chronic tonsillitis. Production of IL-10 and TGF-beta was enhanced by stimulation with OMHP in tonsillar mononuclear cells from IgA nephropathy. These results suggested that local infection of HP and HP-specific IgA induction in the tonsil are associated with pathogens …

BACKGROUND: Tonsillectomy in adults (age 18 years and older) is performed for a variety of conditions. The palatine tonsils may harbor carcinoma or lymphoma, and this potentially unanticipated finding may follow routine tonsillectomy in the adult. The ability to preoperatively identify adult tonsillectomy patients at increased risk for tonsillar malignancy could sensitize the clinician to this possibility and the potential need for expedited rather than routine tonsillectomy scheduling.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 476 consecutive adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy during the la

Subcutaneous peripharyngeal emphysema and pneumomediastinum are rare complications in postoperative patients after several types of surgery (orthognathic, laryngeal, tracheotomy and oropharyngeal). We report a case of subcutaneous and peripharyngeal emphysema after bilateral tonsillectomy in a 43-year-old male. Air or anesthetic gases spread to the neck, mediastinum, abdomen, or pleural cavity.

Data of 38 patients with primary tonsil lymphoma, treated during the past 14 years was analysed. All cases were non-Hodgkin lymphomas. There were 11 patients with Stage 1, 14 with Stage II, 8 with Stage III, and 4 with Stage IV tonsillar lymphomas. The applied chemotherapies were CHOP or MACOP-B regimen. The overall 5-year survival rate was 64.4%. Further analysis of the intermediate grade group showed that 5-year survival rates were 72.7%) for patients younger than 60 years old, in contrast to 35.0% for patients aged 60 or older (p 0.0049). Five-year survival rates were 100%) for Stage I, 32.

Apoptosis is a morphological involution caused by a cellular suicide program which is associated with programmed cell death. Several reports have shown that Fas antigen mediated apoptosis and death of immunocytes in lymphoid tissues are induced through apoptotic mechanisms. The present study was designed to investigate apoptotic cells in human palatine tonsils by using in situ end-labeling (ISEL) technique and flow cytometric analysis with anti-Fas antibody. The ISEL technique showed that a number of apoptotic cells were present in the subepithelial area of the tonsil. Flow cytometric analysis

Primitive involvement of the palatine tonsil with a nodular paragranuloma (nodular subtype of Hodgkin's malady with lymphocytic predominance) is rarely found, being larger in number the cases associated with simultaneous occurrence in other organs. In the paper the AA. report one of this instances sitting solitarily in the palatine amygdala (stadium IA). Furthermore a bibliographic review about Waldeyer's ring lymphoma and particularly on nodular Hodgkin's paragranuloma is displayed.
