Immediate, non-submerged, root-analogue zirconia implants placed into single-rooted extraction sockets: 2-year follow-up of a clinical study.

This study evaluated non-submerged, root-analogue zirconia implants with two different surfaces for immediate single-rooted tooth replacement in 18 patients. After tooth extraction the root was laser scanned and one-piece root analogue zirconia dental implants with one of two different surfaces were manufactured. In group A (n=6) the implant surface was roughened by sandblasting only, in group B (n=12) additional macroretentions limited to the interdental space, to avoid fracture of the thin buccal cortex, were designed prior to laser scanning. Implants were placed in the socket 1-8 days after

[Phenotype analysis and the molecular mechanism of enamel hypoplasia].

Enamel hypoplasia is a surface defect of the tooth crown caused by a disturbance of enamel matrix secretion. Enamel hypoplasia may be inherited, or result from illness, malnutrition, trauma, or high concentrations of fluorides or strontium in the drinking water or food. Different types of enamel hypoplasia have been distinguished, such as pit-type, plane-type, and linear enamel hypoplasia. Hypoplasia has been related to the intensity and duration of stress events, the number of affected ameloblasts, and their position along the forming tooth crown. Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a heterogeneo…

Tooth morphogenesis and the differentiation of ameloblasts.

All vertebrate organs are formed from several cell types, and it is currently believed that interactions between the different components constitute the most important mechanism in the regulation of organ morphogenesis. In developing teeth morphogenetic interactions occur between the epithelium covering the facial processes and the underlying neural crest-derived mesenchyme. Morphogenesis is accompanied by differentiation of the various dental cell types, including the ameloblasts. Although ameloblasts differentiate terminally and start the deposition of enamel matrix only after the completion

The long-term effects of treatment on the dental condition of children surviving malignant disease.

Fifty-two long-term survivors of childhood leukemia or solid tumors had a clinical dental examination along with 49 of their sibling. The 52, with an additional 30 examined in a previous study, were studied radiologically with a panoramic tomogram. All children with leukemia had received chemotherapy for 2 or 3 years and irradiation on standard protocols and the solid tumor group had received chemotherapy for 6 to 24 months. There was no difference between siblings and patients for dental caries, gingivitis, and oral hygiene, mouth opening, overjet, and overbite. More solid-tumor patients had

Long-term outcomes of ceramic crowns in adolescents and young adults with amelogenesis imperfecta: final follow-up of a randomized split-mouth controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) causes functional, esthetic, and psychosocial problems. Although early prosthetic treatment has shown favorable medium-term outcomes, evidence on long-term performance remains limited. This study assessed the ≥10-year clinical performance of Procera zirconia and IPS e.max Press crowns placed in adolescents and young adults with AI. METHODS: This study presents the final long-term follow-up of a previously published randomized, split-mouth, controlled clinical trial with patient blinding. In a single-center, double-blind design, 27 adolescents and young

Rethinking the decision-making process to treat gingival recession associated with non-carious cervical lesions.

The presence of a tooth-surface defect, such as a non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL), associated with sites of gingival recession (GR) defects creates a combined soft tissue/tooth defect (CD) that requires a different treatment plan. This study aimed to critically review the literature regarding the available treatment protocols for CDs and suggest a new decision-making process. NCCLs were classified as Class A-: the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) was visible and the root surface discrepancy was < 0.5 mm (no step); Class A+: CEJ was visible and the root surface discrepancy was > 0.5 mm (with a s

Surgical extrusion of multiple teeth with crown-root fractures: a case report with 18-months follow up.

The objective of this case report is to describe the treatment procedure involved in surgical extrusion of multiple crown-root fractures and review the critical factors to be considered for successful and predictable outcome. The treatment of complicated crown-root fracture in anterior teeth is likely to compromise function and aesthetics when approached with conventional surgical crown lengthening. Orthodontic extrusion has also been suggested; however, it is time-consuming, aesthetically compromising and hardly applicable on multiple anterior crown-root fractures due to the limited source of

Semi talon and trace talon: report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Talon cusp is a relatively rare developmental anomaly characterised by the presence of an accessory cusp-like structure projecting from the cingulum area or cemento-enamel junction of the maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth in both the primary and permanent dentition. It is frequently seen in the permanent laterals. CASE REPORT: The paper presents two cases of talon cusp of semi talon and trace talon type.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucent defect: a case of a nonprogressive lesion.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption or defect is an unusual radiolucency located in the dentin, just beneath the dentin-enamel junction of unerupted teeth. The pathogenesis of the phenomenon is unclear. The present case with a radiolucency that has not changed in its dimension over a period of almost 7 years, until tooth eruption, raises a question about the progressive nature of the defect that is defined as "resorption." Resorption may not be the sole explanation for a pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucent defect. The authors also challenge the hypothesis of "local pressure" as a prime caus

Application and evaluation of coronectomy in Switzerland.

Coronectomy is the intentional partial removal of a tooth. Thereby the crown of the tooth is removed and the roots are left in place. Compared to the complete operative removal of a wisdom tooth, the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI) is lower. The aim of this study is a survey on the use and acceptance of wisdom tooth coronectomy in Switzerland. An anonymous questionnaire was sent to 266 dentists specialized in oral surgery or maxillofacial surgeons; 58.3% of the questionnaires were returned and could be assessed. The statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s exact tes

Developmental disturbance of an unerupted permanent incisor due to trauma to its predecessor.

Developmental disturbances of permanent teeth can result from trauma to primary teeth because of the proximity of the root of the primary teeth to their permanent successors. We describe the case of a 14-month-old boy who was referred to the baby clinic of the School of Dentistry, Universidad Estadual Paulista, Araçatuba, Brazil, after sustaining a severe trauma that led to intrusion of the right primary central incisor. Radiographic examination 4 years after the trauma showed a developing morphological change in the germ of the permanent successor. On eruption of the permanent central incisor

Reattachment or Restoration? Fracture Resistance of Uncomplicated Crown Fractures Using Various Intermediate Materials.

This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of different bonding materials used in fragment reattachment for uncomplicated crown fractures, compared to direct composite resin restoration. Sixty human maxillary incisors were divided into five groups (n = 12): G1, control; G2, direct composite resin; G3, flowable composite; G4, preheated composite; G5, self-adhesive resin cement. After simulated fractures and thermocycling, fracture resistance was tested using a universal machine. Data were analysed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). G1 showed the highest resistance (75.7 ±

Comparative evaluation of three materials used for fragment reattachment in uncomplicated crown fracture-An in vitro study using bovine teeth.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The recommended treatment for uncomplicated crown fractures is bonding the fractured fragment or the fragment reattachment. A paucity was identified regarding the studies comparing the efficacy of micro-hybrid and nanohybrid composites in fragment reattachment. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate and compare three materials for bonding of fragments rehydrated by humidification in teeth with uncomplicated crown fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty mandibular bovine incisors with similar dimensions and free of any structural deformities were fractured similar to the t

A new flapless technique for crown lengthening after orthodontic extrusion.

Orthodontic extrusion (OE), which is performed in many different clinical situations to move a tooth or its periodontal tissues coronally, is often associated with supracrestal fiberotomy and root planing (OEFRP) or followed by surgical crown lengthening. The OEFRP procedure must be carried out every 2 weeks during the entire extrusive orthodontic phase, and precise control of the technique itself can be quite difficult, especially when this approach is to be performed on a limited portion of the root perimeter in teeth affected by angular defects. The aim of this study was to show a new nonsu

Fiber Post and Core Build-up in Endodontically Treated Severely Mutilated Tooth: A Case Report.

Restoring endodontically treated teeth with extensive coronal loss often necessitates the use of post and core systems, with fiber posts increasingly favored for their biomechanical compatibility with natural dentin. This case report presents the clinical use of prefabricated glass fiber posts and a resin composite core to rehabilitate a severely damaged maxillary anterior tooth. A 24-year-old male reported with trauma-induced fracture of tooth #11, leaving it unsuitable for conventional restorative approaches. The treatment plan included root canal therapy followed by placement of a fiber pos
