Desensitizing agent efficacy during whitening in an at-risk population.

BACKGROUND: Nightguard vital bleaching (NGVB) has gained acceptance among dentists and patients as a simple and effective procedure to lighten discolored teeth. Although the efficacy and predictability of NGVB have been well established, it has been documented that patients undergoing the procedure may experience side effects such as tooth sensitivity (TS) and gingival irritation (GI). A previous NGVB study suggested that selected participants might benefit from a regimen of a desensitizing agent (DSA) to decrease or prevent TS during whitening. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to deter

Connective tissue graft and resin glass ionomer for the treatment of gingival recession associated with noncarious cervical lesions: a case series.

This article describes the treatment of gingival recession associated with noncarious cervical lesions by a connective tissue graft in combination with a resin-modified glass-ionomer restoration (CTG + R). Eleven patients showing the association of recession and lesions were selected and treated by CTG + R. Bleeding on probing, probing depth, relative gingival recession, clinical attachment level, noncarious cervical lesion height, and dentin sensitivity were measured. The treatment provided statistically significant gains in clinical attachment level and shallow probing depths. The percentage

Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy score and ambulation index are both predictors of orthotic need for patients with CMT.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common hereditary neuropathy with an estimated prevalence of 1 person affected on 2500. Frequent symptoms include distal weakness and muscle wasting, sensory loss, reduced deep tendon reflexes, and skeletal deformities, such as hammer toes and pes cavus. CMT is a progressive disease and patients' needs change over their lifetime. In particular, ambulation aids are increasingly needed to maintain ambulation and reduce the risk of falls. We performed a retrospective analysis of medical records from 149 patients with confirmed CMT to evaluate patients

Nanotribological characterization of tooth enamel rod affected by surface treatment.

Tooth enamel is a hybrid organic-inorganic bionanocomposite comprised predominantly of enamel rods. Understanding the effects of anti-caries treatment on the biomechanical properties of these rods is essential in developing effective caries prevention strategies. Calcium fluoride-like deposits play an important role in caries prevention and their nanotribological properties have a direct effect upon their long-term effectiveness. Accordingly, this study utilizes a variety of techniques, namely nanoindentation, nanoscratch tests, nanowear tests and atomic force microscopy (AFM), to characterize

The Evolutionary Young Actin Nucleator Cobl Is Important for Proper Amelogenesis.

The actin cytoskeleton plays an important role in morphological changes of ameloblasts during the formation of enamel, which is indispensable for teeth to withstand wear, fracture and caries progression. This study reveals that the actin nucleator Cobl is expressed in ameloblasts of mandibular molars during amelogenesis. Cobl expression was particularly pronounced during the secretory phase of the enamel-forming cells. Cobl colocalized with actin filaments at the cell cortex. Importantly, our analyses show an influence of Cobl on both ameloblast morphology and cytoskeletal organization as well

Bruxism in a Child with Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome)-Case Report.

Bruxism has been defined in recent years and analyzed in detail as the repetitive activity of the muscles of the masticatory system. Both adults and children experience two different forms of bruxism: daytime and nighttime bruxism. According to the WHO, bruxism affects 5% to 50% of the world's pediatric population. The symptoms of this disease include tooth wear and fractures, temporomandibular disorders, headaches, behavioral and sleep disorders, and parafunctional habits such as nail biting. According to scientists, psychosocial factors are the most likely factors causing bruxism in children

Facial asymmetry tracks genetic diversity among Gorilla subspecies.

Mountain gorillas are particularly inbred compared to other gorillas and even the most inbred human populations. As mountain gorilla skeletal material accumulated during the 1970s, researchers noted their pronounced facial asymmetry and hypothesized that it reflects a population-wide chewing side preference. However, asymmetry has also been linked to environmental and genetic stress in experimental models. Here, we examine facial asymmetry in 114 crania from three Gorilla subspecies using 3D geometric morphometrics. We measure fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as random deviations from perfe

Reinterpretation of a Phoenician dental appliance.

Background Since its discovery in 1862, the Gaillardot Phoenician gold wire dental bridge (Louvre artefact no. 5,777) has been the subject of conflicting interpretations as to its correct situation in the jaws, the origin of replaced teeth, and the possibility of teeth having been rearranged within the appliance. Methods This paper offers an analysis based on examination and digital macrophotography of the appliance at the Louvre. Resultant images aided never-before considered points of evidence such as aspects of individual tooth anatomy, occlusion, and the need of the fabricating artisan to a
