[How dangerous is passive smoking?].

Homes and workplaces are polluted by sidestream smoke which irritates eyes and airways and impairs lung functions longer than outdoor summer smog, is more mutagenic than particulates in a city with dense traffic and will cause more cancers in the population than all emissions of diesel, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benzene, asbestos and heavy metals together which are measured at present outdoors in Austrian towns and industrial areas. Lethal effects of passive smoking by placenta have been proven for the fetus and also breathing of parent's tobacco smoke may threaten life of babies

[The effect of sex factors on cytologic changes in the sputum of young adults exposed to urban air pollution].

UNLABELLED: The harmful effect of occupational and urban air pollution on the function and structure of the respiratory tract has been proved. The severity and incidence of epithelial changes are in direct relation to duration of exposure and age of the examined population groups [1]. Squamous metaplasia of bronchial epithelium is an indicator of predisposition to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer [1-5]. Due to its topography and the development of industry and traffic, Sarajevo used to be the city with an extremely high level of air pollution [10-12]. Some studies in adult

Respiratory health status of the roadside school children at Kolkata.

School students in metro cities are often exposed to vehicle exhausts as their schools are situated mostly on the high traffic roadside. Acute exposure to automobile exhaust is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and may decrease and impair lung function in children. The lung functioning performance of the city school children was compared with rural school children where there is no pollution and automobile exhausts. In Kolkata, two schools for boys (n = 210) and two schools for girls (n = 200) and in rural area one school for boys (n = 99) and the other school for girls (n = 95) w

Short-term monitoring of air pollutants at the port-urban exposure zone: a case study of Alexandria Port, Egypt.

Maritime ports are significant sources of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions that can affect air quality in adjacent urban areas. This study assesses the potential impacts of Alexandria Port activities on local ambient air quality, based on field measurements collected both inside and outside the port area. Two-monthly monitoring campaigns were carried out between May and October 2022 at 11 sites in the port and 13 sites in the urban area surrounding it, by using a portable multi-gas monitor and particulate sensors. The results are interpreted as screening-level spatial evidence, where

Associations of PM2.5 exposure with diabetes-related mortality for California residents.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence links air pollution exposure to metabolic dysfunction; however, few studies have examined diabetes-related mortality in relation to ambient air pollutants using high-resolution exposure data at the population level. In the United States, particularly in large and geographically diverse states such as California, exposure contrasts and population heterogeneity provide an important setting to evaluate these associations. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control analysis using California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Vital Records (2010-2021). Diabetes-rela

Acute air pollution exposure increases TET enzymes in human PBMCs.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Negative health impact of diesel exhaust (DE) exposure may in part be mediated via epigenetic modulation. Ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes catalyze the active DNA demethylation process and play important roles in epigenetic regulation. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the expression of TET enzymes in human PBMCs and the differentiation of immune subsets in response to acute DE exposure at a range of concentrations. METHODS: Thirteen healthy participants were recruited for this ran

Exposure to PM2.5 is associated with malignant pleural effusion in lung cancer patients.

Air pollution has been recognized to be a risk factor for lung cancer. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of air pollution on heavy metal alterations in the pleural effusion of lung cancer patients. Pleural effusion was collected from patients with lung cancer and congestive heart failure (CHF). One-year average levels of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of < 10 µm (PM10), PM2.5, NO2, and SO2 were linked to the exposure of these subjects. Traffic-related metals, included Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Pb, were determined in the pleural effusion. Logistic regression

Quantifying the contribution of environmental variables to cyclists' exposure to PM2.5 using machine learning techniques.

Cyclists are particularly vulnerable to travel-related exposure to air pollution. Understanding the factors that increase exposure is crucial for promoting healthier urban environments. Machine learning models have successfully predicted air pollutant concentrations, but they tend to be less interpretable than classical statistical ones, such as linear models. This study aimed to develop a predictive model to assess cyclists' exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in urban environments. The model was generated using geo-temporally referenced data and machine learning techniques. We explor

Health risk in transport workers. Part II. Dietary compounds as modulators of occupational exposure to chemicals.

Professional drivers are exposed to a number of factors that have a negative influence on their health status. These include vibrations, noise, the lack of fresh air in the car cabin, shift work (frequently at night), monotony resulting from permanent repetition of certain actions, static loads due to immobilization in a sitting position, stress resulting from the need to ensure safety in heavy traffic, as well as air pollution (dust, volatile organic substances, nitrogen and sulfur oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, dioxins, furans and others). Factors associated with the

Ageing, exposure to pollution, and interactions between climate change and local seasons as oxidant conditions predicting incident hematologic malignancy at KINSHASA University clinics, Democratic Republic of CONGO (DRC).

BACKGROUND: The global burden of hematologic malignancy (HM) is rapidly rising with aging, exposure to polluted environments, and global and local climate variability all being well-established conditions of oxidative stress. However, there is currently no information on the extent and predictors of HM at Kinshasa University Clinics (KUC), DR Congo (DRC). This study evaluated the impact of bio-clinical factors, exposure to polluted environments, and interactions between global climate changes (EL Nino and La Nina) and local climate (dry and rainy seasons) on the incidence of HM. METHODS: This

Air pollution exposures and circulating biomarkers of effect in a susceptible population: clues to potential causal component mixtures and mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms involving oxidative stress and inflammation have been proposed to explain associations of ambient air pollution with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Experimental evidence suggests that organic components and ultrafine particles (UFP) are important. METHODS: We conducted a panel study of 60 elderly subjects with coronary artery disease living in retirement communities within the Los Angeles, California, air basin. Weekly biomarkers of inflammation included plasma interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha soluble receptor II (sTNF-RII), soluble platelet selectin

Exposures to PM₂.₅ components and heart rate variability in taxi drivers around the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

BACKGROUND: Carbonaceous and metallic components of particles have been shown to play a role in particles' effects on cardiac autonomic function as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Previously we reported the association of HRV with marked changes in traffic-related particulate air pollution around the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a panel of taxi drivers. OBJECTIVE: We further investigated the relationship between exposures to the carbonaceous and metallic components of traffic-related particles and HRV in the same population. METHODS: Repeated measurements of in-car exposures to pa

Combined effects of extreme heat and NO2 on liver disease progression of T2DM mice.

Extreme hot temperature and heavy traffic pollution are increasingly prevalent environmental stressors and are independently associated with adverse metabolic outcomes, but their combined effects on metabolically-associated liver disease (MASLD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remain unclear. This study employed a T2DM mouse model exposed to 4 h of daily extreme heat at 40°C and nitrogen dioxide with 5 ppm during six weeks in order to assess their interaction in relation to MASLD development. Results showed that combined exposure raised blood glucose levels and aggravated hepatic histopatho

The effects of genetic and modifiable risk factors on brain regions vulnerable to ageing and disease.

We have previously identified a network of higher-order brain regions particularly vulnerable to the ageing process, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. However, it remains unknown what the genetic influences on this fragile brain network are, and whether it can be altered by the most common modifiable risk factors for dementia. Here, in ~40,000 UK Biobank participants, we first show significant genome-wide associations between this brain network and seven genetic clusters implicated in cardiovascular deaths, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and with the two antigens of t

Prenatal and early life exposure to air pollution induced hippocampal vascular leakage and impaired neurogenesis in association with behavioral deficits.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders in human populations. In rodent models, prenatal TRAP exposure increased depressive behaviors and increased brain microglial activity. To identify cellular mechanisms, we examined adult neurogenesis and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in relation to cognition and motivated behaviors in rats that were exposed to a nano-sized TRAP subfraction from gestation into adulthood. At age 5 months, exposed male rats had 70% fewer newly generated neurons in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. M

Effects of public health interventions on industrial emissions and ambient air in Cartagena, Spain.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: Ten years of public health interventions on industrial emissions to clean air were monitored for the Mediterranean city of Cartagena. During the 1960s, a number of large chemical and non-ferrous metallurgical factories were established that significantly deteriorated the city's air quality. By the 1970s, the average annual air concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) ranged from 200 to 300 microg/m3 (standard conditions units). In 1979, the Spanish government implemented an industrial intervention plan to improve the performance of factories and industrial air pollutio

A pilot study using scripted ventilation conditions to identify key factors affecting indoor pollutant concentration and air exchange rate in a residence.

A pilot study was conducted using an occupied, single-family test house in Columbus, OH, to determine whether a script-based protocol could be used to obtain data useful in identifying the key factors affecting air-exchange rate (AER) and the relationship between indoor and outdoor concentrations of selected traffic-related air pollutants. The test script called for hourly changes to elements of the test house considered likely to influence air flow and AER, including the position (open or closed) of each window and door and the operation (on/off) of the furnace, air conditioner, and ceiling f

Proximity to traffic and exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in relation to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and conduct disorder in U.S. children.

BACKGROUND: Traffic related air pollution (TRAP) and its component polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may be neurotoxic in children. There is limited research on postnatal exposure to TRAP and PAHs and child neurodevelopment. METHODS: We linked data from the U.S. NHANES 2001-2004 with the National Highway Planning Network 2005 to examine the proximity to major roads (highway or urban/rural principal arterials), urinary PAH metabolites, and diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) based on Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (C-DISC) in

Size distributions of fine and ultrafine particles in the city of Strasbourg: correlation between number of particles and concentrations of NO(x) and SO(2) gases and some soluble ions concentration determination.

An Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) was used during spring and autumn 2003 in the centre of Strasbourg for the measurement of atmospheric aerosols size distribution. The concentration of NO(x) and SO(2) in air was simultaneously measured with specific analysers. Samples were collected in the range 0.007-10 microm in equivalent aerodynamic diameter size. Number distributions are representative of a pollution originating from urban traffic with a particle size distribution exhibiting a nucleation mode below 29 nm and an accumulation mode around 80 nm in size. A mean particle density equal
