First deep eutectic solvent-based (DES) stationary phase for gas chromatography and future perspectives for DES application in separation techniques.

The paper presents the first application of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as stationary phases for gas chromatography. DES obtained by mixing tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) with heptadecanoic acid being a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) in a mole ratio of HBA:HBD equal to 1:2 was characterized by its ability to separate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Rohrschneider - McReynolds constants determined reveal that the synthesized DES is a stationary phase of medium polarity. A detailed retention characteristic was determined for a number of groups of chemical

Visual observation of African trypanosomes during cryopreservation.

Protozoa have been widely used for the study of cryopreservation. The survival rate after cryopreservation has always received the most attention, while the cell viability during the process of freezing and thawing has been much less studied. In the present study, we report successful cryopreservation of Trypanosoma brucei, a parasitic protozoa of human and animals, using controlled-rate freezing at 5°C/min, and real-time observation of activity using a microscope differential scanning calorimeter system during the freezing and thawing process. Trehalose used as a cryoprotective agent at a con

New approaches toward recognition of nucleic acid triple helices.

A DNA duplex can be recognized sequence-specifically in the major groove by an oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN). The resulting structure is a DNA triple helix, or triplex. The scientific community has invested significant research capital in the study of DNA triplexes because of their robust potential for providing new applications, including molecular biology tools and therapeutic agents. The triplex structures have inherent instabilities, however, and the recognition of DNA triplexes by small molecules has been attempted as a means of strengthening the three-stranded complex. Over the decades, the

Diffuse scattering study of aspirin forms (I) and (II).

Full three-dimensional diffuse scattering data have been recorded for both polymorphic forms [(I) and (II)] of aspirin and these data have been analysed using Monte Carlo computer modelling. The observed scattering in form (I) is well reproduced by a simple harmonic model of thermally induced displacements. The data for form (II) show, in addition to thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) similar to that in form (I), diffuse streaks originating from stacking fault-like defects as well as other effects that can be attributed to strain induced by these defects. The present study has provided strong ev

Unobtrusive Skin Temperature Estimation on a Smart Bed.

The transition from wakefulness to sleep occurs when the core body temperature decreases. The latter is facilitated by an increase in the cutaneous blood flow, which dissipates internal heat into the micro-environment surrounding the sleeper's body. The rise in cutaneous blood flow near sleep onset causes the distal (hands and feet) and proximal (abdomen) temperatures to increase by about 1 °C and 0.5 °C, respectively. Characterizing the dynamics of skin temperature changes throughout sleep phases and understanding its relationship with sleep quality requires a means to unobtrusively and longi

A Complex Spin-Transition Thermal Hysteresis Unlocked by Two Competing Symmetry-Breakings.

The spin-crossover material [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2 belongs to the class of 1D triazole-based polymeric SCO complexes. It exhibits a thermal phase transition, with a 28 K wide thermal hysteresis, characterized by phase transition temperatures T↑ = 346 K upon warming and T↓ = 318 K upon cooling. This hysteretic thermal phase transition is unusual because it is associated with two competing symmetry-breaking phenomena: a ferroelastic distortion upon warming from the low-spin (LS) trigonal phase to the high-spin (HS) triclinic phase, and a unit cell tripling upon cooling from the HS phase to the LS p…

Effect of sulfone linkage on chain architecture and structure-property relationships of colorless and transparent polyimides.

Six colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) films were synthesized using two dianhydrides-4,4'-biphenyl dianhydride (BPA) and 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulfone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA)-in combination with three diamines to investigate the effect of backbone structure on material properties. BPA-based CPIs exhibited more linear and densely packed chain structures, resulting in higher glass transition temperatures, enhanced thermal stability, superior mechanical properties, and lower coefficients of thermal expansion. In contrast, DSDA-based CPIs containing polar -SO2- linkages showed slight…

Asymmetric structural transitions in the icosahedral organization of Eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Delivery of the viral genome into host cells is a critical step in successful viral infection. Alphaviruses achieve this step by fusing the viral and endosomal membranes under acidic conditions. This process requires significant structural changes in the alphavirus glycoprotein organization. Structural characterization of acidic pH-induced conformational changes in alphavirus virions has remained elusive due to the rapid, transient nature of these states, conformational heterogeneity, and particle aggregation. Antibody binding studies conducted at elevated temperatures or under acidic pH condi

Hidden Valley Polarization, Piezoelectricity, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interactions of Janus Vanadium Dichalcogenides.

Due to the lack of inversion symmetry and the discovery of room-temperature ferromagnetism, two-dimensional semiconducting vanadium-based van der Waals transition-metal dichalcogenides (V-TMDs) are drawing attention for their possible application in spintronics and valleytronics. Here, we show the functional properties enriched by the broken inversion, out-of-plane mirror, and time-reversal symmetries of Janus H-VXY TMDs (X, Y = S, Se, Te). By first-principles calculations, we reveal the intrinsic xy easy-plane magnetism of the Janus vanadium-based TMD monolayers and systematically study their

Pressure effect on magnetism and valence in ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2.

Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2is an intriguing system with unusual coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism, providing a unique platform to study the nature of such coexistence. To establish a magnetic phase diagram, time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer experiments in151Eu have been performed on a single crystalline Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2sample under hydrostatic pressures and at low temperatures. Upon compression the magnetic ordering temperature increases sharply from 20 K at ambient pressure, reaching ∼49 K at 10.1 GPa. With further compression, the magnetic order is suppressed and eventually co

High-Pressure Phase Transformations in TiPO4 : A Route to Pentacoordinated Phosphorus.

Titanium(III) phosphate, TiPO4  , is a typical example of an oxyphosphorus compound containing covalent P-O bonds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of TiPO4 reveal complex and unexpected structural and chemical behavior as a function of pressure at room temperature. A series of phase transitions lead to the high-pressure phase V, which is stable above 46 GPa and features an unusual oxygen coordination of the phosphorus atoms. TiPO4 -V is the first inorganic phosphorus-containing compound that exhibits fivefold coordination with oxygen. Up to the highest studied pressure of 56 GPa, TiPO

Quantitative Analysis of Amyloid Fibril Nucleation by Linking Folding and Nucleation Pathways Using a Robust Ultrasonic Assay.

Understanding the mechanism of amyloid fibril formation, a nucleation-dependent process influenced by physicochemical conditions, is crucial for eradicating amyloidosis, as it represents the initial step in the pathological cascade of the disease. In this study, we develop a miniaturized ultrasonic platform for the amyloid fibril study, μHANABI, which enables reproducible and rapid analysis of amyloid formation kinetics. Leveraging the robustness of the developed system, we investigate the nucleation rate of α-synuclein, an intrinsically disordered protein, and β2-microglobulin, a natively fol

Nature of 2D XY antiferromagnetism in a van der Waals monolayer.

Two-dimensional antiferromagnetism has long attracted significant interest in many areas of condensed matter physics, but only recently has experimental exploration become feasible due to the isolation of van der Waals antiferromagnetic monolayers. Probing the magnetic phase diagram of these monolayers remains however challenging because established experimental techniques often lack the required sensitivity. Here, we investigate antiferromagnetism in atomically thin van der Waals magnet NiPS₃ using magnetotransport measurements in field-effect transistor devices. Temperature-dependent conduct

Tuning the spin-crossover properties of [Fe2] metal-organic cages.

A computational study on the interplay between ligand functionalization and guest effects on the transition temperature (T1/2) in the [Fe2(L1R)3]@X (L1 = 1,3-bis-(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)benzene, X = H-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I- and [BF4]-, R = H, F, or CH3) family of metal-organic cages (MOCs) is presented. Our results indicate that ligand functionalization with electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups can significantly impact the T1/2 as expected, while the guest effect in lowering the T1/2 has a linear correlation with the increasing guest size. More importantly, small guests can m…

Quantum and Semiclassical Dynamics of Nonadiabatic Electronic Excitation of C(3P) to C1D) by Hyperthermal Collisions with N2.

The dynamics and kinetics of nonadiabatic excitation of C(3P) to C(1D) induced by hyperthermal collisions with N2 molecules are investigated using a quantum mechanical and two semiclassical nonadiabatic methods. The full-dimensional interaction potential energy surfaces and spin-orbit coupling, which facilitates the spin-forbidden process, are represented by a recently constructed diabatic potential energy matrix. The multistate quantum dynamics for selected partial waves found small transition probabilities due to the weak spin-orbit coupling. The spin-flip transition is the most favored near

Solid-State Reaction Heterogeneity During Calcination of Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode.

During solid-state calcination, with increasing temperature, materials undergo complex phase transitions with heterogeneous solid-state reactions and mass transport. Precise control of the calcination chemistry is therefore crucial for synthesizing state-of-the-art Ni-rich layered oxides (LiNi1-x-y Cox Mny O2 , NRNCM) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Although the battery performance depends on the chemical heterogeneity during NRNCM calcination, it has not yet been elucidated. Herein, through synchrotron-based X-ray, mass spectrometry microscopy, and structural analyses, it is r

The reaction NH2 + CH2O: Kinetic measurements and computational studies.

The reaction of amidogen with formaldehyde is relevant to astrochemistry and couples nitrogen and carbon chemistry in flames. The first measurements of the temperature dependence of the rate constant k were made, over 409-643 K, and are summarized as k = 7.1 × 10-12 exp(-18.2 kJ mol-1/RT) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 with a confidence interval of ±20%. These results address a controversy over the presence of a significant barrier in the addition/elimination pathway leading to the production of formamide between theoretical models that include the zero-point energy of all modes at the transition state an

Potassium tert-Butoxide Promoted Synthesis of Dihydroquinazolinones.

We herein report an efficient synthetic protocol to access heterocyclic dihydroquinazolinones by a transition-metal-free process, involving the reaction of 2-aminobenzonitriles with aldehydes in the presence of KOtBu. The method is compatible with aromatic ketones providing 2,2-disubstituted dihydroquinazolinones in high yields. This reaction proceeds feasibly at room temperature and features a broad substrate scope and tolerance to a range of functional groups. The mechanism follows a radical pathway.

Iodide-Photocatalyzed Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Formic Acid with Thiols and Hydrogen Sulfide.

The photolysis of iodide anions promotes the reaction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen sulfide or thiols to quantitatively yield formic acid and sulfur or disulfides. The reaction proceeds in acetonitrile and aqueous solutions, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature by irradiation using a low-pressure mercury lamp. This transition-metal-free photocatalytic process for CO2 capture coupled with H2 S removal may have been relevant as a prebiotic carbon dioxide fixation.
