Dietary and lifestyle factors in functional dyspepsia.

Dietary factors are increasingly recognized to have an important role in triggering symptoms in a large proportion of patients with functional dyspepsia. Fatty foods seem to be the main culprits, but other foods (including carbohydrate-containing foods, milk and dairy products, citrus fruits, spicy foods, coffee and alcohol) have also been implicated. However, blind challenge tests do not provide consistent results. Moreover, although patients identify specific foods as triggers of their symptoms, these patients often do not seem to make behavioural adjustments in an attempt to improve symptom

[Characteristic of the normal values of the pain threshold values in the dorsal region of the young women obtained by the pressure algometry method under different condition].

UNLABELLED: The application of modern techniques for different types of massage and manual therapy is associated with the exposure of the paravetrebral points. The knowledge of pain threshold values at these points is of great practical significance. AIM: The objective of the present study was to obtain the statistical characteristics of the individual pressure pain threshold (PPT) for the healthy women and patients presenting with minor disturbances of spinal motion segments (SMS) at the trigger points on the back. The secondary objective was to estimate the dependence of the PPT parameters …

[Is acne caused by colonization with the "wrong" strain of Propionibacterium acnes? A review of the role of Propionibacterium acnes in acne].

Acne is still a major problem, and treatment options are far from ideal. A number of studies suggest that the species Propionibacterium acnes plays an important role in the pathogenesis, and new data point towards molecular mechanisms by which the organism is able to trigger the host inflammatory response. The current knowledge on P. acnes in relation to acne is reviewed.

Characterization of cardiovascular profile of anti-influenza drug peramivir: A reverse-translational study using the isoflurane-anesthetized dog.

An injectable anti-influenza drug peramivir has been reported to induce QT-interval prolongation in some phase III studies, although its thorough QT/QTc study was negative. We investigated the discrepancy among those clinical studies using isoflurane-anesthetized beagle dogs (n = 4). Peramivir in doses of 1 mg/kg/10 min (sub-therapeutic dose) followed by 10 mg/kg/10 min (clinically-relevant dose) was intravenously administered. Peramivir prolonged QT interval/QTcV and Tpeak-Tend, and tended to delay ventricular repolarization in a reverse-frequency dependent manner, indicating IKr inhibition i

Point Process Models for the Spread of Coccidioidomycosis in California.

Coccidioidomycosis is an infectious disease of humans and other mammals that has seen a recent increase in occurrence in the southwestern United States, particularly in California. A rise in cases and risk to public health can serve as the impetus to apply newly developed methods that can quickly and accurately predict future caseloads. The recursive and Hawkes point process models with various triggering functions were fit to the data and their goodness of fit evaluated and compared. Although the point process models were largely similar in their fit to the data, the recursive point process m

Raised intraocular pressure as a potential risk factor for visual loss in Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy.

Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is an important cause of inherited mitochondrial blindness among young adults. The majority of patients carry one of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) point mutations: m.3460G>A, m.11778G>A and m.14484T>C, all of which affect critical complex I subunits of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. LHON is characterised by marked incomplete penetrance, clearly implying that the mtDNA mutation is insufficient on its own to trigger retinal ganglion cell dysfunction and visual loss. In this case series of three affected patients harbouring the m.11778G>A mutation,

[Chronic right-sided pain-associated nondermatomal somatosensory deficit following an accident].

We present the case of a 48-year old man who, eight years after an industrial accident, presents with chronic right-sided nondermatomal pain and hypaesthesia to heat and touch. During symmetric peripheral touch functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed hypometabolism in the left thalamus, somatosensory cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex. Pain-associated nondermatomal somatosensory deficits (NDSDs) localizing to one side of the body are a frequent clinical entity, which are often triggered by an accident. The tendency of NDSDs to extend to adjunct ipsilateral body parts and to become ch

Sensor-triggered sampling to determine instantaneous airborne vapor exposure concentrations.

It is difficult to measure transient airborne exposure peaks by means of integrated sampling for organic chemical vapors, even with very short-duration sampling. Selection of an appropriate time to measure an exposure peak through integrated sampling is problematic, and short-duration time-weighted average (TWA) values obtained with integrated sampling are not likely to accurately determine actual peak concentrations attained when concentrations fluctuate rapidly. Laboratory analysis for integrated exposure samples is preferred from a certainty standpoint over results derived in the field from

Assessing the quality and readability of ChatGPT responses to frequently asked questions about trigger finger release.

Artificial intelligence, specifically large language models like ChatGPT, is rapidly transforming the healthcare landscape. As ChatGPT becomes more popular for obtaining medical information, there are concerns regarding the accuracy and quality of its content. While prior studies in various medical specialties have yielded mixed results regarding ChatGPT's reliability, little research has focused on its ability to address questions regarding specific orthopedic procedures, such as surgical intervention for stenosing tenosynovitis (trigger finger). This study assessed the accuracy, clarity, and

Norepinephrine does not potentiate porcine malignant hyperthermia.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare genetic trait characterized by potential life-threatening episodes of hypermetabolism, hyperthermia, and muscle rigidity when susceptible humans or animals are exposed to triggering drugs. The role of norepinephrine (NE) in triggering MH is controversial. The purpose of this study was to show that NE does not initiate nor speed the onset of MH in susceptible swine exposed to known triggering drugs. Three groups of MH susceptible (MHS) pigs were exposed to two times the minimum alveolar anesthetic concentrations (MAC) halothane (2%) for 60 min and monitored

Khat (Catha Edulis) as a possible cause of autoimmune hepatitis.

AIM: To investigate the potential role of khat in triggering auto immune hepatitis. METHODS: Patients with a history of khat use and acute hepatitis were identified using the computer database in the hepatology department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. They were then assessed for probability of having autoimmune hepatitis using the revised autoimmune hepatitis scoring criteria. RESULTS: Six patients were identified. All of them had presented with acute hepatitis on a background of khat. All were male and five of these patients were of Somali origin, while one patient was from Yemen. The

Longitudinal Mycobacterium tuberculosis-Specific Interferon Gamma Responses in Ethiopian HIV-Negative Women during Pregnancy and Postpartum.

Pregnancy may influence cellular immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We investigated M. tuberculosis-specific interferon-γ responses in women followed longitudinally during pregnancy and postpartum. Interferon-γ levels (stimulated by M. tuberculosis antigens [TB1 and TB2] and mitogen included in the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus assay) were measured in blood from pregnant HIV-negative women identified from a prospective cohort at Ethiopian antenatal care clinics. Longitudinal comparisons included women without active tuberculosis (TB) with M. tuberculosis-triggered interferon-γ response

Multiple Levels of Triggered Factors and the Obligated Requirement of Cell-to-Cell Movement in the Mutation Repair of Cucumber Mosaic Virus with Defects in the tRNA-like Structure.

Some debilitating mutations in RNA viruses are repairable; however, the triggering factors of mutation repair remain largely unknown. In this study, multiple triggering factors of mutation repair are identified based on genetic damage to the TLS in CMV. TLS mutations in different RNAs distinctively impact viral pathogenicity and present different types of mutation repair. RNA2 relative reduction level or RNA3 sequence change resulting from TLS mutation is correlated with a high rate of mutation repair, and the TLS mutation of RNA1 fails to be repaired at the high inoculum dose. However, the TL

Transfusion intensity in the ICU: Reasons and triggers.

BACKGROUND: The reasons and physiological triggers for blood transfusion in critically ill patients are not well characterized. Beyond hemoglobin levels, hemodynamic instability is frequently cited, but its role across clinical contexts remains unclear. AIMS: (1) To determine whether reasons and triggers for RBC transfusion differ across intensive care unit (ICU) days with varying transfusion intensity. (2) To describe reasons for non-RBC transfusions across these intensity groups. METHODS: This sub-study of the prospective International Point Prevalence Study of Intensive Care Unit Transfus

Corticosteroid Injection With and Without Local Anesthetic for the Treatment of Trigger Finger: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to report pain during and following injection for trigger finger as well as failure to resolve triggering. We hypothesized that a corticosteroid injection alone would be equally or less painful compared with the standard combination of corticosteroid and lidocaine for the treatment of trigger fingers, and there would be no difference in the resolution of triggering. METHODS: Our study was a prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial at a single institution, comprising 76 patients with a diagnosis of trigger finger. Each treatment group consisted of 38 p
