C57BL/6J mice were immunized with irradiated Trypanosoma rhodesiense organisms. Splenic lymphocytes were subsequently obtained from immunized animals and were tested for blast transformation in vitro after exposure to soluble trypanosome antigens. Immune T lymphocytes were found to be the cells responsible for antigen-mediated blastogenesis to trypanosome antigens. In addition, trypanosome antigen preparations in higher concentrations stimulated B lymphocytes obtained from normal nonimmunized animals.

African trypanosomiasis is accompanied by profound general immunosuppression. The experiments described here were designed to characterize the contribution of macrophages to the immune pathology of this disease. We used peptone-stimulated, uninfected mice and injected them intraperitoneally with lethally irradiated and 35S-labeled Trypanosoma brucei and parasite-specific antisera. Immunological diagnosis methods appear to be necessary at the occasion of large scale surveys. The authors recommend indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and propose the creation of a mobile team supplied with necessary equipment for immunological tests and parasitological exams to be carried out in the field.

This paper describes the pathological features of 10 cases of human African trypanosomiasis occurring in Uganda over an 8-year period. Three cases were clinically proved, and in all 10 cases chronic meningoencephalitis and myocarditis were present. There was chronic pancarditis in 6 cases, and in 3 of these there was a generalized focal valvulitis and in 2 lesions of the conducting system.
