Tuberculous abscess of the liver is rare. A case is reported and the southern African literature briefly reviewed. The clinical similarities to amoebic and pyogenic liver abscesses and primary or secondary neoplasms of the liver are emphasized. Laboratory tests and hepatic scintiscans may not assist in differentiating between these conditions.

The authors report 6 cases of tuberculosis of the bone marrow, in which the diagnosis was made by biopsy. Three of these cases, included peripheral blood abnormalities, such as pancytopenia, whereas in the three other, nothing special was found on routine blood examination. All the patients, except one who died from intercurrent infection, became cured thanks to anti-tuberculosis treatment. Marrow biopsy thus permits early diagnosis, miliary tuberculosis, even when usual radiological and bacteriological investigations are negative.

Patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) frequently develop hepatic dysfunction. Although hepatic injury may indirectly result from malnutrition, hypotension, administered medications, sepsis, or other conditions, the hepatic injury is frequently due to opportunistic hepatic infection, directly related to AIDS. Infection with Mycobacterium avium intracellulare typically occurs in patients with advanced immunocompromise and with systemic symptoms due to widely disseminated infection. In contrast, hepatic tuberculosis often occurs with less advanced immunocompromise. Cytomega

A non-motile bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), causes tuberculosis (TB), an infection of the lower respiratory tract. Currently, rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide are used as first-line treatment for drug-susceptible TB for two months, followed by four months of rifampicin and isoniazid. This treatment plan is linked to serious hepatic, dermatological, and hematopoietic adverse effects. The exploration of natural substances like quercetin for treating TB was driven by the significant side effects of the standard therapy protocol. Protein-coated gold nanopopcorns we

SETTING: Although active tuberculosis (TB) is a contraindication for liver transplantation (LT), LT may be the only possible treatment option in patients with irreversible liver failure and concurrent TB.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the outcome of LT in patients with concurrent TB and liver failure.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of nine LT recipients with concurrent TB in Korea, an intermediate TB burden country.
RESULTS: The primary causes of living-donor LT (LDLT) in nine patients were anti-tuberculosis drug-induced fulminant hepatic failure (n = 4) and end-stage l

Recent experiences with severe acute respiratory syndrome and the US smallpox vaccination program have demonstrated the vulnerability of healthcare workers to occupationally acquired infectious diseases. However, despite acknowledgment of risk, the occupational death rate for healthcare workers is unknown. In contrast, the death rate for other professions with occupational risk, such as police officer or firefighter, has been well defined. With available information from federal sources and calculating the additional number of deaths from infection by using data on prevalence and natural histo

Viral hepatitis is among the top four causes of mortality globally, causing 1.4 million deaths each year, exceeding tuberculosis, malaria and human immunodeficiency virus. Hepatitis B and C are responsible for 90% of hepatitis deaths, and the remaining 10% are caused by other hepatitis viruses. The annual number of deaths from hepatitis C is declining, whereas the numbers of deaths from hepatitis B and D are increasing. Hepatitis B alone represents the seven highest cause of mortality worldwide. Spurred on by development of curative antivirals for hepatitis C and expanding access to hepatitis

Health care personnel (HCP) are at risk of exposure to infectious agents depending on their job duties and other factors. Risks include percutaneous exposure to blood-borne pathogens via sharp injuries (eg, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus); exposure by direct contact, droplet, or airborne transmission of pathogens through direct patient care (eg, pertussis, invasive meningococcus infections, tuberculosis); and through indirect contact transmission related to the contaminated health care environment (eg, Clostridioides difficile). Tuberculostatic drugs are the most common drug groups with global hepatotoxicity. Awareness of potentially severe hepatotoxic reactions is vital, as hepatic impairment can be a devastating and often fatal condition. The treatment problems that may arise, within this class of medicines, are mainly of two types: adverse reactions (collateral, toxic or hypersensitive reactions) and the initial or acquired resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to one or more antituberculosis drugs. Prevention of adverse reactions, increase treatment adherence and success rates, providing better control of tuber

Rifampin, a semisynthetic rifamycin, is the cornerstone of current tuberculosis treatment. Among many semisynthetic rifamycins, benzoxazinorifamycins have great potential for TB treatment due to their superior affinity for wild-type and rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis RNA polymerases and their reduced hepatic Cyp450 induction activity. In this study, we have determined the crystal structures of the Escherichia coli RNA polymerase complexes with two benzoxazinorifamycins. The ansa-naphthalene moieties of the benzoxazinorifamycins bind in a deep pocket of the β subunit, blocking th

Four patients with abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) managed in the University Department of Medicine, Singapore General Hospital, are presented to highlight problems encountered in the diagnosis of this condition. Three patients had intestinal tuberculosis, one of whom had peritoneal involvement and another had possible hepatic disease. The fourth patient presented with peritoneal disease alone. Ages at presentation ranged from 25 years to 71 years. There were three females and one male. Two patients presented with symptoms of chronic illness for 10 months before the disease was diagnosed. In 1971, rifampin was approved for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis. At present, the approved indications remain the same. However, rifampin in conjunction with at least one other antituberculous drug may be of great value in therapy of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and infections due to other susceptible mycobacteria. In addition, results of clinical trials in leprosy have been highly encouraging. Rifampin appears to induce light chain proteinuria in a majority of patients and has been implicated in suppression of both humoral and cell-medi

BACKGROUND: Canine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is rare and often underdiagnosed. This case report aims to describe the clinical, pathological, and molecular features of a dog with systemic tuberculosis, highlighting its epidemiological relevance within a One Health framework. The specific objective is to characterise a confirmed case of systemic M. tuberculosis infection in a dog, emphasising its unique clinicopathological features, including hypercalcaemia, and documenting an inferred reverse zoonotic transmission with subsequent intra-household zoonotic re-exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Although there is growing evidence supporting the effectiveness of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in treating alopecia areata, the high rate of recurrence following drug discontinuation has led to prolonged treatment courses and raised concerns about long-term safety. In clinical practice, caution should be exercised while using JAK inhibitors for various indications, and a comprehensive pre-treatment screening.
METHODS: This study presents an analysis of screening data collected from real-world settings before the initiation of Janus kinase inhibitors in patients with alopecia a

For several years many infectious diseases in Poland show decrease in incidence, a some vaccine preventable like poliomyelitis and diphtheria are completely absent or like measles hale very low incidence. Widening of the program of obligatory vaccinations caused decrease of incidence of diseases dependent on Hib infections and also of mumps and rubella. Though rubella incidence in Poland remains one of the highest in Europe. Despite constant decease of incidence of tuberculosis it is still about twice higher then the average of tuberculosis incidence in Western European Countries. Incidence of
