Quantification of thyroid nodules in multiple ultrasonography systems.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been proposed in recent studies to extract tissue acoustic properties from pulse-echo signal. This paper introduces QIT-net, a quantitative imaging technique designed to assess thyroid nodules by quantifying acoustic attenuation (ATT) and speed of sound for multiple ultrasonography systems. The proposed method employs a CNN-Transformer hybrid architecture to effectively capture local features for fine details and global features for macro context within RF data. B-mode images are employed as an auxiliary input to ensure reliable performance regardless of the c…

Ultrasonography of palpable masses in the pediatric head and neck.

Palpable soft-tissue masses in the pediatric head and neck are common and encompass a broad differential that includes congenital, infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic processes. Owing to its ability to characterize lesion morphology, vascularity, and internal architecture without ionizing radiation, ultrasonography (US) remains the primary imaging modality for initial evaluation. This review focuses on pediatric head and neck masses, emphasizing practical US-based assessment and differential diagnosis. Entities discussed include common congenital lesions such as dermoid cysts, thyroglossa…

Ultrasonography or Radiography for Suspected Pediatric Talocalcaneal Coalition.

BACKGROUND: Talocalcaneal coalition is a common tarsal coalition, but incomplete ossification in children often leads to underdiagnosis using traditional radiographic signs like the "C sign" and "talar beak." Ultrasonography, which is radiation-free and detects unossified cartilage, has not been studied for pediatric talocalcaneal coalition. This study evaluates the accuracy and reliability of ultrasonography versus radiography in diagnosing suspected pediatric talocalcaneal coalition. METHODS: Eighty-six suspected talocalcaneal coalitions underwent ultrasonography, radiography, and 3-dimensi…

Thoracic ultrasonography in the follow-up of pulmonary infarct.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary infarction is an ischaemic necrosis resulting from pulmonary arterial occlusion, occurring in approximately one-third of pulmonary thromboembolism cases. While computed tomography angiography remains the gold standard for diagnosis, its use in follow-up is limited by radiation exposure. Thoracic ultrasonography, a bedside, radiation-free and repeatable modality, may serve as an alternative tool for monitoring pulmonary infarction. CASE REPORT: We present a 44-year-old woman who developed sudden dyspnoea and back pain 1 week after venous surgery. Computed tomography ang…

Diagnostic Ability of Transabdominal Ultrasonography for Appendiceal Diverticulitis.

OBJECTIVES: Appendiceal diverticulitis (AD) is frequently confused with acute appendicitis (AA); however, AD carries a higher risk of perforation and malignancy than AA. We aimed to evaluate the preoperative diagnostic ability of transabdominal ultrasonography (US) for AD. METHODS: We included 74 patients who underwent appendectomy with a preoperative diagnosis of AA, AD, and US within a day of surgery. AD was diagnosed using US by identifying protruding, pouch-like hypoechoic structures beyond the appendiceal margin, whereas it was diagnosed using histopathology by identifying the invaginati…

Spontaneous cecal perforation in a cat diagnosed with ultrasonography.

An 8-year-old cat was presented for an acute history of anorexia, marked abdominal pain, and hyperthermia. Ultrasonography showed a cecal perforation with focal steatitis and adjacent free gas bubbles, consistent with focal peritonitis. Surgery confirmed the imaging findings. An enterectomy was performed with the removal of the cecum and ileocolic valve, and anastomosis between the ileum and colon was performed. Histology revealed transmural enteritis and chronic severe pyogranulomatous peritonitis with intralesional plant fragments.

Nerve Ultrasonography for the Diagnosis and Evaluation of Neuralgic Amyotrophy.

Neuralgic amyotrophy (NA) is a peripheral nervous system disorder involving multifocal distribution. Although nerve ultrasonography has shown potential for detecting NA lesions, no established detection method exists for distal forearm NA. A 59-year-old man presented with weakness of the muscles innervated by the left posterior interosseous nerve (PIN), median nerve (MN), anterior interosseous nerve (AIN), and ulnar nerve (UN), following severe left shoulder pain. This case suggests that nerve ultrasonography can help accurately diagnose distal forearm NA.
