One hundred and forty three patients who had urethroplasty for urethral stricture between 1980 and 1989 were reviewed. Their age ranged from nine to 75 years with a mean of 39 +/- 10.2 SD years. Infection caused stricture in 51% and trauma in 46.9%. Urethral trauma resulted mostly from road traffic accidents. The inflammatory strictures were located in the anterior urethra, whilst traumatic ones were in the bulbomembranous region. A questionnaire dealing with the incidence of traumatic injuries was sent to 1,000 randomly selected 3rd-year university students in Finland; 617 students responded adequately. Of those, 177 (28.7%) reported a combined total of 281 accidents and 323 separate injuries requiring medical or dental treatment during the preceding 3 years. The accidents resulted in 1,061 days of official sick leave, and one third of the accidents caused permanent sequelae to the affected students. The experience with open cholecystectomy in an university affiliated hospital is documented in this report. We studied retrospectively 221 patients operated between 1987 and 1992, type of surgery, morbidity and mortality were analyzed. There were 171 (77.3%) cholecystectomy alone and 50 (22.7%) cholecystectomy with other biliary surgery (BS). Pulmonary, urinary and wound complications were the most common. The liver transplant program at the University of Miami, established in 1987, was rejuvenated in June 1994 with the addition of new staff and expanded to include all organs of the gastrointestinal tract. In randomized trials comparing the 2 drugs, the ability of tacrolimus to rescue intractably rejecting grafts on the competing CyA arm allowed equalization of patient and graft survival on both arms when the intent-to-treat analytic methodology was applied. OBJECTIVE: To highlight recent trends in maternal mortality in Hacettepe University Hospital.
METHOD: A retrospective clinical analysis of 117 maternal deaths between 1968 and 1992.
RESULTS: The overall maternal mortality ratio was 180/100,000 (108/59,993). In terms of 5-year periods, the maternal mortality ratio declined from 417.7 in 1968-72 to 73.7 in 1988-92. The authors reviewed 508 cases of lymphoma seen during a 16-year period in University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Hodgkin's disease was diagnosed in 95 (18.6%) patients, of which 45% had mixed cellularity type; 19%, lymphocyte predominance; 18%, nodular sclerosis; and 18%, lymphocyte depletion. Students from six colleges and universities in five states in the U.S. (New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, and Nevada) were surveyed concerning their gambling behavior and the rate of pathological gambling. The prevalence of hearing impairment in university students was determined from a 6-year, pure-tone hearing screening conducted at 20 dB HL for the octave frequencies from 500 to 4000 Hz. Of the 18,424 students tested, 1.2 percent failed the screening. The ratio of unilateral to bilateral hearing impairment was found to be approximately 1:1. Sensorineural hearing loss was four times more prevalent than conductive hearing loss in this population and significant hearing loss at 4000 Hz was evident in 61 percent of the males who failed the screen.

During the past 20 years (1970-90), we had 24 patients with pheochromocytoma: 19 diagnosed clinically and 5 post-mortem. Their ages ranged from 17 to 74 (mean, 43.2 years). A study of 1452 human temporal bones revealed a previously unpublished material of 144 bones with otosclerosis.
