Intermittent self-catheterization was taught to 70 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) between 1.9.1989 and 31.1.1992 in Masku Neurological Rehabilitation Centre. All of them were interviewed in April 1992. Altogether 62 (89%) returned the questionnaires. The aims of the study were 1) to define the compliance of the patients to the treatment, and 2) to assess the effect of the catheterization on the quality of life of the patients. The conceptual framework used for the study was self care concept. Bladder symptoms had been present for seven years (mean) and the average time after the diagnos

A working-group of the Scientific Council of the CBO has drawn up a report on infection control of patients with longterm indwelling catheterization of the urinary bladder. In the first place, restricted use of catheters and shortening of their indwelling use are intended. Furthermore preventive and diagnostic measures and treatment are recommended in case of urinary tract infection and blocking catheters.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection in hospitalized adults. Nosocomial UTIs are mainly associated with the use of urinary catheters. Thus, the decision for catheterization should be made carefully and catheters removed in time. In order to prevent unnecessary antibiotic use in patients with urinary catheters correct diagnosis is crucial. Chinolones, broad-spectrum penicillins and third-generation cephalosporins are the mainstay of therapy. Comorbidities should be considered and potential obstructions of urinary flow removed. Economically important are the normally higher

Neurogenic urinary tract dysfunction is characterized by inadequate voiding and urinary incontinence. The aim of therapy nowadays is adequate bladder emptying and control of urinary incontinence. Neurogenic urinary incontinence can be caused by (a) detrusor hyperreflexia, (b) sphincter hypo- or areflexia, (c) a combination of both, or also (d) detrusor hyporeflexia with consequent overlow incontinence. Based on a simple urodynamic classification the current treatment strategies are presented. (a) Detrusor hyperreflexia can be transformed into hypo- or are-flexia pharmacologically with potent d

Recent reports have suggested that the prophylactic use of clean intermittent catheterization in selected infants with myelodysplasia and with normal upper tracts may prevent their deterioration. The selection of these patients at risk depends on urodynamic criteria. We reviewed our experience with clean intermittent catheterization instituted when upper tract deterioration was found. Of 130 patients with myelodysplasia followed at our clinic 25 (19%) had or presented with radiological upper urinary tract deterioration. A total of 21 patients had vesicoureteral reflux and 4 had hydronephrosis

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are the most common secondary cause of bloodstream infection. CAUTI is particularly pre … bacterial CAUTI. It also emphasized that the risk of CAUTI was associated with a longer duration of urinary catheterization. The findings of this study may help formulate antimicrobial management and stewardship plans as well as emphasize the risk of urinary catheterizations.

BACKGROUND: Removal of urinary catheters depends on accurate noninvasive measurements of bladder volume. Patients with acute kidney injury often have low bladder volumes/ascites, possibly causing measurement inaccuracy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of bladder volumes measured with bladder scanning and 2-dimensional ultrasound (US) compared with urinary catheterization among different types of clinicians.
METHODS: Prospective correlational descriptive study of 73 adult critical care patients with low urine output receiving hemodialysis or unable to void. Bladder volumes were independen…

Of 260 patients being actively followed in a myelodysplasia clinic 48 have had a vesicostomy. Vesicostomy was done because of hydroureteronephrosis in 44 cases, infection in 3 and failure of clean intermittent catheterization in 1. Of the 48 patients 16 underwent closure of the vesicostomy, generally between ages 6 and 10 years, an age when the child is prepared to begin clean intermittent catheterization and is motivated to achieve continence. Two children underwent early vesicostomy closure because the bladder emptied adequately and neither has yet begun clean intermittent catheterization. T

Urologic studies suggest that urinary catheter dependent loops (tubing low points) may be a contributing cause of bacteriuria and urinary tract infection among catheterized patients. The means by which this type of contaminant transmission occurs, however, remains poorly understood. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted to provide a foundational look at catheter dependent loops and their possible role in catheter-acquired urinary tract infections, and as a building block for further research.

Urinary tract infection remains one of the most common healthcare-associated infections in the intensive care unit and predominantly occurs in patients with indwelling urinary catheters. Duration of catheterization is the most important risk factor for developing catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). General strategies for preventing CAUTI include measures such as adherence to hand hygiene. Targeted strategies for preventing CAUTI include limiting the use and duration of urinary catheters, using aseptic technique for catheter insertion, and adhering to proper catheter care. Anti

OBJECTIVE: Clean self-intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the gold standard of the therapeutic approach of chronic urinary retention. Usually, CIC are safe, effective but in some cases catheterization can determine urethral pain during catheter insertion or withdrawal leading to poor adherence and compliance. To determine prevalence of pain during CIC and verify its impact on adherence to treatment.
METHOD: Retrospective study with evaluation of pain during CIC one month following CIC teaching session by means specific and validated questionnaires: ICDQ (Intermittent Catheterization Difficu
