COVID-19: a closer look at the pathology in two autopsied cases. Is the pericyte at the center of the pathological process in COVID-19?

We performed autopsies on two cases of COVID-19. The microcirculations of all organs were the site of the pathological findings. Thrombotic microangiopathy was found in the brain and also the kidneys. Vasculitis was also a feature of the autopsy findings, together with portal triaditis of the liver. The major pathological findings in both cases were fibrin deposits. Within the lung, the fibrin deposits were observed in the alveolar microcirculation in sub-endothelial locations of capillaries, arterioles, post capillary venules, and the adventitia of larger vessels. These fibrin deposits in the…

The immunological anatomy of the skin.

The skin is the outermost organ of the body and is continuously exposed to external pathogens. Upon inflammation, various immune cells pass through, reside in or are recruited to the skin to orchestrate diverse cutaneous immune responses. To achieve this, immune cells interact with each other and even communicate with non-immune cells, including peripheral nerves and the microbiota. Immunologically important anatomical sites, such as skin appendages (for example, hair follicles and sweat glands) or postcapillary venules, act as special portal sites for immune cells and for establishing tertiar…

Intravital Microscopy in the Cremaster Muscle Microcirculation for Endothelial Dysfunction Studies.

The intravital microscopy in the mouse cremaster muscle microcirculation is a method widely used to visualize in vivo blood cells interacting with the endothelium and within the vessels. Therefore, it is a suitable technique to study leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions along every stage of the canonical leukocyte recruitment cascade: rolling, adhesion, intravascular crawling, and migration both in postcapillary venules and arterioles of the mouse cremasteric microcirculation. This technique also enables to assess vessel functionality, since hemodynamic parameters such as shear stress, flow…

Budd-Chiari syndrome due to giant hydatid cyst: a case report and brief literature review.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is an uncommon disorder characterized by the thrombotic or non-thrombotic obstruction of hepatic venous outflow anywhere along the venous course from the hepatic venules to the junction of the inferior vena cava and the right atrium. The etiology of Budd-Chiari syndrome is classified as primary, attributable to intrinsic intraluminal thrombosis or the development of venous webs; or secondary, caused by intraluminal invasion by a parasite or malignant tumor or extraluminal compression by an abscess, solid tumor, or cyst, such as a hydatid cyst. In this study, we present a c…

Morphology and properties of pericytes.

Pericytes were described in 1873 by the French scientist Charles-Marie Benjamin Rouget and were originally called Rouget cells. The Rouget cell was renamed some years later due to its anatomical location abluminal to the endothelial cell (EC) and luminal to parenchymal cells. In the brain, pericytes are located in precapillary arterioles, capillaries and postcapillary venules. They deposit elements of the basal lamina and are totally surrounded by this vascular component. Pericytes are important cellular constituents of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and actively communicate with other cells of…

Aquaporins: roles in renal function and peritoneal dialysis.

Aquaporin (AQP) water channels are important in the function of the kidney. Constitutively expressed AQP1 in the proximal tubule and descend … ch can result in profound nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Aquaporin 1 is present in capillaries and venules and appears to be important in peritoneal dialysis, where it appears to represent the "ultrasmall pores" of the three-pore model. Decreased expression or function of AQP1 may be responsible for some cases of ultrafiltration failure, but further evid …

Coccidioidomycosis meningitis with massive dural and cerebral venous thrombosis and tissue arthroconidia.

To our knowledge we report the first case of meningitis from Coccidioides immitis associated with massive dural and cerebral venous thrombosis and with mycelial forms of the organism in brain tissue. The patient was a 43-year-old man with late-stage acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) whose premortem and postmortem cultures confirmed C immitis as the only central nervous system pathogenic organism. Death was attributable to multiple hemorrhagic venous infarctions with cerebral edema and herniation. Although phlebitis has been noted parenthetically to occur in C immitis meningitis in the

Histopathology of diabetic retinopathy in man.

The retinal changes associated with diabetes mellitus are a consequence of the systemic microangiopathy with modifications related to the in … er a response to increased ischaemia. Vascular proliferation in front of the retina originates from venules close to areas of ischaemia; the endothelium may be fenestrated initially and fibrosis may accompany the new vessels.

Microfibril-microvessel connections in the rabbit eye: correlative confocal and electron microscopy.

The connections between elastic tissue and microvessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) in the rabbit eye were examined by light and electron microscopy. In particular, confocal scanning laser microscopy of tissue stained with orcein and examined by fluorescence using a rhodamine filter was correlated with electron microscopic observations. The goal was an analysis of the way in which elastic tissue of the uvea (i.e., choroid, ciliary body, and iris) and the optic nerve of the eye connect to the microvessels in these structures. Confocal microscopy revealed these connections advantageou…

The corpus callosum, a unique white-matter tract: anatomic features that may explain sparing in Binswanger disease and resistance to flow of fluid masses.

The corpus callosum exhibits several unusual features: arteriole-venule pairs, perivascular fibrous alae, and recurrent companion arterioles. These and other anatomic aspects are compared and contrasted with those of the centrum semiovale. Vascular changes occurring with aging or hypertension, commonly seen in the centrum semiovale, rarely develop in the corpus callosum. The vascular supply to the central zone of the genu and body of the corpus callosum, via short penetrating arterioles, is similar to that of the cerebral cortex, whereas the vascular supply to the extreme lateral corpus callos

Infantile hemorrhagic angiodysplasia.

We report a female infant who presented at birth with an unusual syndrome of disseminated cutaneous and gastrointestinal vascular malformations associated with severe thrombocytopenia and chronic gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The infant required extensive blood-product support and expired at 7 months of age. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of numerous flat vascular lesions, descriptively classified as angiodysplastic, and composed of congeries of dilated capillaries, arterioles, and postcapillary venules. No visceral space-occupying hemangiomas were found. The case is discussed in…

Schistosomiasis: host-pathogen biology.

Schistosomes are helminths of the class Trematoda that alternate generations, with a sexual phase in definitive mammalian hosts and an asexual phase in intermediate snail hosts. In humans, these blood flukes reside in the mesenteric and vesical venules. They have a life span of many years and daily produce large numbers of eggs, which must traverse the gut and bladder tissues on their way to the lumens of the excretory organs. Many of the eggs remain in the host tissues, inducing immunologically mediated granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis. Heavy worm burdens may produce hepatosplenic dise…

[Structure and age-related changes of the microcirculatory routes of human parathyroid glands].

Parathyroid glands (648), obtained from 170 cadavers of men and women of different age (from neonatal to the age of 90 years) were examined. … microcirculation tracts increases due to an elevated number of the convoluted, lacune-like dilated venules, venulo-venular anastomoses. Convoluted arterioles and arteriolo-arteriolar anastomoses appear in old age, and the number of arteriolo-venular anastomoses becomes greater.

Pulmonary oedema in rats given dehydromonocrotaline: a topographic and electron-microscope study.

Study of cleared, histological and electron-microscope specimens shows that increased vascular permeability plays a major role in the formation of the pulmonary oedema and pleural effusions that occur in rats following the intravenous injection of a large dose of dehydromonocrotaline. There is a latent interval of 6-8 hr between injection of the dehydroalkaloid and the start of increased permeability which appears to be due to a direct damaging effect of the toxin on the endothelium of pulmonary capillaries and small venules. The endothelial injury does not cause permanent disruption of small …

Frosted Branch Angiitis in a Patient with Typhoid Fever.

Frosted branch angiitis (FBA), a rare form of retinal vasculitis presenting as bilateral perivascular sheathing, resembling the appearance of frosted tree branches in winter, was first reported by Ito et al.1 in 1976, in a young immunocompetent boy. FBA predominantly affects healthy young patients, the youngest reported in an 11-month-old infant2 and oldest in a 42-year-old patient.3 Classical symptoms include sudden onset of blurred vision with floaters and photopsiae. Fundus examination shows widespread perivascular translucent sheathing affecting both arterioles and venules, more commonly l…

[Other causes of pulmonary arterial hypertension: pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis, porto-pulmonary hypertension, HIV- associated pulmonary arterial hypertension].

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is included in Group 1 of PAH classification, while pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD), pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH), portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH) and HIV-associated PAH constitute the subgroups of Group I PAH disorders. PVOD has similar clinical presentation, hemodynamic characteristics and genetic background with PAH although main pathology is in venules and definite diagnosis is done by biopsy although not recommended due to high risk of bleeding. PCH, a rare idiopathic lung disorder, causes PAH in young adults and mos…

Inflammatory pseudotumors in multiple organs associated with elevated serum IgG4 level: recovery by only a small replacement dose of steroid.

A 62-year-old man developed a fever, fatigue, anorexia and arthralgia. Central hypocorticoidism and central hypothyroidism were observed, and a low serum antidiuretic hormon level without symptoms of diabetes insipidus, as well. Images showed swelling of pituitary stalk, mediastinal and hilar lymphnodes and pancreas, pulmonary infiltrates and retroperitoneal mass. Serum CRP level was 20.6 mg/dL, and IgG4 level was 292 mg/dL. Lung biopsy revealed pseudotumor containing IgG4-positive plasmacytes, and obliterative vasculitis both in arterioles and venules. These features were similar to those of …

Proliferative epithelial lesions of the urinary bladder in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) infected with Schistosoma intercalatum.

Five cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were infected with Schistosoma intercalatum, a helminth that is morphologically similar to Schistosoma haematobium. Infections were readily established and remained active until the monkeys were sacrificed 21 to 84 weeks after exposure. Although the schistosomes were located predominantly in mesenteric and hepatic portal venules, schistosome eggs were found in the bladders of 3 monkeys. Nodules of atypical epithelial cells interpreted as superficially infiltrating undifferentiated bladder carcinomas were found in one monkey 23 weeks after infection…

Neutrophils in tumor- and inflammation-induced lymphangiogenesis.

Lymphangiogenesis is the formation of new lymphatic vessels from preexisting vessels and occurs during embryonic lymphatic development and under pathological conditions induced by internal or external stimuli. Emerging evidence suggests that neutrophils contribute to the construction and remodeling of new lymphatic vessels. Neutrophils migrate to lymph nodes through the lymphatic vessels or high endothelial venules, and neutrophil migration may depend on the phenotype of the neutrophil. The presence of unique neutrophil phenotypes in individuals with lymphangiogenesis has been reported. Neutro…
