[Dyslexia: clinical characteristics].

Dyslexia is characterized by a severe, persistent reading disorder occurring in an intelligent child. In the large field of learning disabilities, dyslexia is related to a cerebral dysfunction well described with Imagery and genetic studies. Nevertheless the diagnosis of dyslexia cannot be done by another way than clinical symptoms. Optimizing the management of children with dyslexia is a critical issue and is now possible, thanks to the improvement of neurosciences data and the mobilization of the key stakeholders. The knowledge of the precise symptoms is essential in order to lead the child'

Spelling pronunciation and visual preview both facilitate learning to spell irregular words.

Spelling pronunciations are hypothesized to be helpful in building up relatively stable phonologically underpinned orthographic representations, particularly for learning words with irregular phoneme-grapheme correspondences. In a four-week computer-based training, the efficacy of spelling pronunciations and previewing the spelling patterns on learning to spell loan words in Dutch, originating from French and English, was examined in skilled and less skilled spellers with varying ages. Reading skills were taken into account. Overall, compared to normal pronunciation, spelling pronunciation fac

Naming speed deficits in adults with reading disabilities: a test of the double-deficit hypothesis.

The present study investigated the persistent nature of naming speed deficits within the context of the double-deficit hypothesis in a university sample of adults with reading disabilities (RD). Twenty-five university students with RD were compared to 28 typically achieving readers on measures of reading skill, phonological processing, and naming speed. The results indicated that both naming speed and phonological processing deficits characterized the RD group. In a regression analysis, neither naming speed nor phonological processing were important variables in explaining comprehension when r

Both concreteness and age-of-acquisition affect reading accuracy but only concreteness affects comprehension in a deep dyslexic patient.

As concreteness correlates very highly with the age-of-acquisition (AoA) of words, we attempted to disentangle the effects of these two variables in the oral reading and comprehension performance of the deep dyslexic patient LW. The results of a multiple regression analysis of LW's reading of 217 words showed that both AoA and concreteness affect reading accuracy, with the AoA effect being most apparent for her reading of concrete words. However, concreteness and not AoA affected LW's performance in matching spoken definitions to printed words, both when the distractors were semantically unrel

Phonological spelling errors among dyslexic children learning a transparent orthography: the case of Czech.

Substantial evidence from studies of English-speaking dyslexic children's spelling suggests that these individuals have a persistent impairment in representing the phonological structure and content of words in writing. In contrast, several studies of German dyslexic children (Landerl & Wimmer, 2000) suggest that, among learners of transparent orthographies, the above impairment is transient and resolves by the end of grade 2; instead dyslexic spelling is characterised by a persistent impairment in learning inconsistent spelling patterns. In order to determine whether phonological spelling dif

A straight nasal septum and right unilateral hypertrophied inferior nasal turbinate, a very rare anatomical phenomenon, in skilled language translators: relevance to anomalous dominance, brain hemisphericity and second language acquisition.

Research on second language acquisition has recently focused on the concept of brain hemisphericity. Since the nasal cycle indexes brain hemisphericity and a deviated nasal septum itself affected by structural brain dominance may prevent nasal cycling, we investigated the presence of septal deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy in 11 expert translators. We found that 10 of the 11 subjects demonstrated both a straight nasal septum and right unilateral inferior turbinate hypertrophy, an extremely rare anatomical phenomenon. The one-tailed binomial test was extremely significant (p < .0000

Can reading disabilities be diagnosed without using intelligence tests?

Unlike conventional procedures, which use IQ in making diagnostic and eligibility decisions regarding learning disabilities, this demonstration study used listening comprehension and other reading-related tasks to make a differential diagnosis of reading disabilities. Tests of listening and reading comprehension were administered to 180 children from Grades 3 through 8. A regression equation was then derived to predict reading comprehension from listening comprehension. The regression equation was applied to the listening comprehension scores of seven children from Grades 3 to 8 who had readin

Rehabilitation of alexia: a case study.

This case study described the success of a technique labeled Multiple Oral Rereading (MOR) in the remediation of a case of acquired alexia in an adult male. Unusually slow visual-verbal processing characteristic of this patient is sometimes noted in dyslexic children. The possibility that MOR might prove effective for other selected cases of acquired alexia and "developmental" dyslexia is considered.

Visual paired associate learning deficits associated with elevated beta-amyloid in cognitively normal older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that paired associate learning (PAL), a type of episodic memory, is impaired in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such tasks require that a set of associations (e.g., pattern-location) be learned over several trials, and the objective is to reduce errors with each trial. Currently, the nature and magnitude of impairment and decline on PAL measures in cognitively normal (CN) older adults with elevated levels of beta-amyloid (Aβ+) is unknown. METHOD: This study examined PAL errors in Aβ+ and Aβ - CN older adults, both within a single assessment and over time

Verbal labels modulate perceptual object processing in 1-year-old children.

Whether verbal labels help infants visually process and categorize objects is a contentious issue. Using electroencephalography, we investigated whether possessing familiar or novel labels for objects directly enhances 1-year-old children's neural processes underlying the perception of those objects. We found enhanced gamma-band (20-60 Hz) oscillatory activity over the visual cortex in response to seeing objects with labels familiar to the infant (Experiment 1) and those with novel labels just taught to the infant (Experiment 2). No such effect was observed for objects that infants were famili

Dissociated conditional-associative learning in anorexia nervosa.

This study assessed the acquisition of conditional-associations using neutral and individually threatening nouns in 16 females with anorexia nervosa (AN), 16 females with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 16 normal controls (NC). Groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, handedness, depression, intelligence, verbal memory and verbal fluency measures. Furthermore, patients and controls were widely comparable on any test assessing neuropsychological functioning. In the conditional-associative learning (CAL) task, anorexic patients displayed an impaired performance with neutral material but not with ind

Evaluating behavioral techniques in training individuals with severe and profound mental retardation to use functional independent living skills.

Three treatment approaches were evaluated for functional skill acquisition in individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The control condition comprised the standard treatment protocol: verbal prompting, modeling, and physical guidance. The first condition added the components of staff training, feedback, and edible reinforcement for clients. The second treatment condition supplemented the first by the addition of verbal and edible reinforcement for staff. Subjects included 30 residents from a large developmental center (Pinecrest) in central Louisiana. The control protocol prove

Memory deficits in advanced Parkinson's disease.

Apart from global dementia various isolated cognitive deficits have been described in Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated 31 non-demented Parkinsonian patients in their late stages of disease and 50 control subjects with regard to verbal memory. Eleven patients suffered from an isolated verbal memory deficit as defined by two list learning tasks using the Buschke selective reminding procedure. The isolated memory impairment did not depend on depression but was associated with longer duration of PD. Twelve demented PD patients were comparable to PD patients with isolated memory impairment

Abnormal Functional Connectivity Pattern of the Reward Circuitry Is Associated with Negative Symptoms and Cognitive Functions in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between abnormal functional connectivity (FC) patterns in the reward circuitry … ntribute to their negative symptoms. The absence of correlations between certain FCs and attention, verbal learning, and visual learning can be explained by decoupling of the reward circuitry from the cognitive control brain regions.
