[An approach to modeling the dynamics of vestibular myogenic potentials].

Some problems related with vertigo belong to saccular malfunctions. The purpose of this case study was to analyze the vestibular induced myogenous potentials (VIMP) isolated from responses to an acoustic stimulation of the internal ear. The suggested technique is based on modeling each average response as an autoregression process (AP). The spectral analysis of a singal, representing a temporal evolution of the AP parameters, was shown to be applicable for studying the VIMP time dynamics. The method can be used as an instrument in classifying the vestibular pathologies.

[Bilateral vestibular loss as a post-infection complication of yersiniosis?].

BACKGROUND: Yersinia infections other than plaque are caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica. Food and water contamination as well as animal-to-person and person-to-person contact are common pathways of transmission. Clinical manifestations include enteritis, enterocolitis, acute appendicitis, inflammation of the terminal ileum, and mesenteric adenitis. Y. enterocolitica may cause bacteremia with subsequent septicemia predominantly in patients with underlying illnesses such as diabetes mellitus or malignancy. More frequently enteritis is followed by immunological pos

[Oto-vestibular symptoms in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Electromyographic study].

The authors analyse the otovestibular symptoms (acoupheny, muffled hearing, vertigo, hypoacusia, otalgia) present among other symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunctions. A number of hypotheses have been advanced regarding the etiopathogenesis of these symptoms, but all stem from three theories. The first theory is based on the possibility of a mechanical transmission of force from the temporomandibular joint to the middle ear by the discomalleolar ligament. Another theory hypothesises the possible direct irritation by the condyl on the auriculotemporal nerve. The most widely credited etiopathog

A clinical study of vestibular neuronitis.

By means of clinical and neurotological findings in 38 patients with vestibular Neuronitis, an analysis of the clinical-pathological manifestations, that may be included into this denomination, has been carried out. The probable etiology of this disease and the results of the tests performed have also been analyzed. In the light of these results the vestibular compensatory mechanisms, studied with later periodic tests, are discussed, and the conclusions on the prognosis and treatment of this entity derived.

[Characteristics of the vestibulo-ocular interaction in patients with unilateral damage of the peripheral part of the vestibular system. The counter-rotation reaction of the eyes (report 4)].

The vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR) was investigated in 40 patients with unilateral injury of the peripheral compartment of the vestibular system during their sinusoidal rotation and gaze fixation at a stationary object. At the stage of vestibular dysfunction decompensation the VOR coefficient showed a significant asymmetry and a decrease during rotation towards the injured side. As the dysfunction was compensated this asymmetry disappeared.

[Galvanic stimulation of the vestibular system: indications and determination of normal values based on the frequency of the slow nystagmus phase].

The most important features of the galvanic test are the persistence of galvanic nystagmus after complete destruction of the labyrinth and its impairment as soon as the peripheral neurone is damaged. 25 normal subjects, 4 patients with an acoustic neuroma and 4 patients with Menière's disease were investigated. A difference in slow phase velocity between the right and left sides of more than 22% indicates a lesion of the vestibular nerve. In patients with an acoustic neuroma the difference lay between 59% and 100%. In Menière's disease the difference measured was between 1% and 15%.

Vestibular testing in patients with panic disorder and chronic dizziness.

In order to investigate the relationship between chronic dizziness and vestibular function in patients with panic disorder, in the present study neurotologic findings in 15 patients with panic disorder and chronic dizziness were compared with those in 15 patients with chronic dizziness, without panic disorder. All underwent neurotologic screening for spontaneous, positional and positioning nystagmus with head-shaking and head-thrust tests, an audiometric examination and electronystagmography with bithermal stimulation according to Freyss. A significantly higher number of patients with panic di

Ethovision™ analysis of open field behaviour in rats following bilateral vestibular loss.

Bilateral vestibular loss (BVL) causes a unique behavioural syndrome in rodents, with symptoms such as locomotor hyperactivity and changes in exploratory behaviour. Many of these symptoms appear to be indirect consequences of the loss of vestibular reflex function and are difficult to explain. Although such symptoms have been reported before, there have been few systematic studies of the effects of BVL using automated digital tracking systems in which many behavioural symptoms can be measured simultaneously with high precision. In this study, data were obtained from rats with BVL induced by in

A novel mouse model of acute vestibular dysfunction via semicircular canal injection of absolute ethanol.

OBJECTIVE: Various vestibular pathology models have been developed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of vestibular diseases; however, there is a notable absence of minimally invasive mouse model of vestibular dysfunction. In this study, we established a novel model and conducted a comprehensive evaluation of vestibular function alongside various behavioral assessments. METHODS: We developed a surgical procedure involving canalostomy followed by injection of absolute ethanol into the semicircular canal of mice. Histological analysis and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing were condu

Vestibular results after intratympanic gentamicin therapy in disabling Menière's disease.

Intratympanic injection of gentamicin is increasingly used in the treatment of unilateral disabling Menière's disease (MD). Several objective functional and subjective tests have been developed to assess the control of vertigo after gentamicin treatment. The aim of this study was to show that subjective results require a vestibular deafferentation as profound as possible, evidenced with multifrequency vestibular assessment. Sixty four patients with intractable MD in situation of medical treatment failure longer than 6 months were included between 1998 and 2013 in this case control study. A 2-y

[Technique for the assessment of vestibular compensation--clinical observation/quantitative neuro-otometry?].

PROBLEM: Reliable evaluation of vestibular compensation in indispensable to determine whether labyrinth surgery or vestibular neurectomy is indicated. It is also important for postoperative follow-up. Vestibular compensation can manifest itself differently in distinct frequency ranges. METHOD: Twenty volunteers were examined in five distinct situations of daily vestibular stimulation. Measurement of angular and linear head acceleration was performed using accelerometers fixed on the volunteers' head. A 200 Hz AD fed data to a PC database. FFT was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Stimulus fre

Agreement between functional and electrophysiologic measures in patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular system impairment.

This investigation was conducted to determine whether there was congruence between "physiology-based" definitions of compensated and uncompensated unilateral peripheral vestibular system impairment and "functional" measures of self-perceived dizziness disability/handicap. A retrospective analysis was performed on data obtained from 122 patients evaluated in the Balance Function Laboratory at Henry Ford Hospital over a 4-year period. Both electronystagmography and rotational test data were tabulated. Additionally, results of a self-report measure of dizziness disability/handicap were tabulated.
