Cardiopulmonary response during whole-body vibration training in patients with severe COPD.

Several studies in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have shown that whole-body vibration training (WBVT) has beneficial effects on exercise capacity. However, the acute cardiopulmonary demand during WBVT remains unknown and was therefore investigated in this study. Ten patients with severe COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 s: 38±8% predicted) were examined on two consecutive days. On day one, symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed on a cycle ergometer. The next day, six bouts of repeated squat exercises were performed in random order for one,…

High-speed Imaging of Vocal Fold Vibration Onset Delay: Normal Versus Abnormal.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal fold vibration onset delay (VFVOD) is heard frequently in spasmodic dysphonia and in muscle tension dysphonia. VFVOD changes due to other vocal pathologies have not been investigated. VFVOD during sustained vowel production was estimated with high-speed video in 10 normal and 40 pathologic subjects (scars, vocal fold paralysis, vocal fold nodules, and polyps). Analysis of high-speed video was done using digital kymography. RESULTS: VFVOD can be divided into two portions. Pre-phonation delay (PPD) is the duration when the vocal folds are nearly approximated to the time of fir…

Vibration energy absorption in the whole-body system of a tractor operator.

Many people are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) in their occupational lives, especially drivers of vehicles such as tractor and trucks. The main categories of effects from WBV are perception degraded comfort interference with activities-impaired health and occurrence of motion sickness. Absorbed power is defined as the power dissipated in a mechanical system as a result of an applied force. The vibration-induced injuries or disorders in a substructure of the human system are primarily associated with the vibration power absorption distributed in that substructure. The vibration power abs…

Transmission of acceleration from a synchronous vibration exercise platform to the head.

Exercise vibration platforms are becoming commonplace in homes and fitness centers. However, excessive mechanical energy transferred to the head and eye can cause injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how changes in platform frequency and knee flexion angle affect acceleration transmission to the head. Participants (N=12) stood on a whole-body vibration platform with knee flexion angles of 0°, 20°, and 40° to evaluate how changes in knee flexion affected head acceleration. 7 specific platform frequencies were tested between 20-50 Hz at 2 peak-to-peak displacement settings (1 and 2 …

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: clinical characteristics, conventional electrophysiology and quantitative sensory testing.

OBJECTIVE: Workers exposed to vibrating tools may develop hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). We assessed the somatosensory phenotype using quantitative sensory testing (QST) in comparison to electrophysiology to characterize (1) the most sensitive QST parameter for detecting sensory loss, (2) the correlation of QST and electrophysiology, and (3) the frequency of a carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in HAVS. METHODS: QST, cold provocation tests, fine motor skills, and median nerve neurography were used. QST included thermal and mechanical detection and pain thresholds. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients…

Application of vibration milling for advanced wastewater treatment and excess sludge reduction.

As a new sludge reduction technology with a phosphorus removal mechanism, a vibration milling technology that uses iron balls have been applied to the wastewater treatment process. Three anaerobic-aerobic cyclic activated sludge processes: one without sludge disintegration; one disintegrated sludge by ozonation; and the other disintegrated sludge with the vibrating ball mill were compared. Ozonation achieved the best sludge reduction performance, but milling had the best phosphorus removal. This is because iron was mixed into the wastewater treatment tank due to abrasion of the iron balls, lea…

Effects of vibration on the proteome expression of anterior cruciate ligament cells.

Recent reports have suggested that vibration has beneficial effects on knee healing response; however, the biomechanism of these beneficial effects still need to be determined on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) cell level. In this study, we applied a 20 Hz vibration to ACL cells, which produced a 20% increase (P < 0.001) in cell activity and 17% increase (P < 0.001) in intracellular sulfated glycosaminoglycan levels. In the 20 Hz vibration-stimulated ACL cell group, eight up-regulated (100 ∼ 300%) protein spots were identified compared with the control group by proteomics analysis. Among …

Nerve conduction in relation to vibration exposure - a non-positive cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathy is one of the principal clinical disorders in workers with hand-arm vibration syndrome. Electrophysiological studies aimed at defining the nature of the injury have provided conflicting results. One reason for this lack of consistency might be the sparsity of published longitudinal etiological studies with both good assessment of exposure and a well-defined measure of disease. Against this background we measured conduction velocities in the hand after having assessed vibration exposure over 21 years in a cohort of manual workers. METHODS: The study group cons…

Muscle tissue oxygenation and VEGF in VO-matched vibration and squatting exercise.

Exposure to vibration has traditionally been associated with compromised perfusion. This study investigated whether blood supply during whole body vibration (WBV), as an exercise modality, is in proportion to the metabolic demand by the contracting musculature. As a secondary aim, serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were assessed. Ten young healthy males performed WBV and dynamic shallow squatting (Squat) exercise at comparable levels of oxygen uptake for 3 min. Changes in oxygenated, deoxygenated and total haemoglobin (O(2)Hb, HHb and tHb, respectively) along with tissue…

Characterization of frequency-dependent responses of the vascular system to repetitive vibration.

OBJECTIVE: The current frequency weighting proposed in the International Standards Organization-5349 standard may underestimate the risk of injury associated with exposure to vibration >100 Hz. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency-dependent responses of the peripheral vascular system to repeated bouts of vibration. METHODS: The effects of exposure to vibration at 62.5, 125, or 250 Hz (constant acceleration of 49 m/s2) on vascular morphology, oxidative stress, inflammation, and gene expression were examined in the ventral tail artery of rats. RESULTS: Vascular responses indicati…

Vibrotactile perception and effects of short-term exposure to hand-arm vibration.

This study clarifies whether the established frequency weighting procedure for evaluating exposure to hand-transmitted vibration can effectively evaluate the temporary changes in vibrotactile perception thresholds due to pre-exposure to vibration. In addition, this study investigates the relationship between changes of the vibrotactile perception thresholds and the normalized energy-equivalent frequency-weighted acceleration. The fingers of 10 healthy subjects, five male and five female, were exposed to vibration under 16 conditions with a combination of different frequencies, intensities, and…

Short-term effects of vibration therapy on motor impairments in Parkinson's disease.

Recent studies have suggested that vibration therapy may have a positive influence on motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, quantitative evidence of these benefits is scarce, and the concept of "whole-body" vibration in these studies is vague. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the influence of vibration on motor symptoms and functional measures in PD by delivering sound waves to the entire body. We delivered whole body sound wave vibration to 40 individuals with PD using a Physioacoustic Chair, a piece of equipment with speakers spaced through…

Effects of whole body vibration on postural steadiness in an older population.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vibration exercise on postural steadiness performance in a healthy, older population. Forty-three healthy, older participants (23 men and 20 women, aged 73.5+/-4.5 yr) were randomly assigned to either a vibration group (VIB), an exercise without vibration group (EX) or a control group (CONT). The VIB and EX groups undertook static and dynamic bodyweight exercises three times per week for eight weeks. Static balance was assessed using a one-legged postural steadiness (OLPS) test. This test was performed prior to and immediately after the t…

[Combined exposure to noise and vibration and its effects on workers' hearing].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the exposure of bus drivers to noise and whole-body vibration (WBV) and to examine the possibility of an association between these risk factors for noise-induced hearing loss. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 141 bus drivers who underwent an audiometry test. This group was classified and internally stratified in subgroups of "exposed" and "controls" according to cumulative working time as bus drivers. Their exposure to noise and vibration was assessed. The association between noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and the set of explanatory variables was …

Vibration anesthesia: a noninvasive method of reducing discomfort prior to dermatologic procedures.

In some dermatologic and cosmetic procedures, local anesthesia is not sufficient for relieving pain; often patients are averse to injections. We propose vibration anesthesia, the use of vibration delivered with commercially available inexpensive massagers to reduce discomfort. We find the analgesic effect of vibration helpful in minimizing pain in patients undergoing injections of botulinum toxin type A treatment for hyperhidrosis, injection of filler substances such as Restylane and Juvederm, laser therapy for leg veins, nail-fold injections, Q-switched laser treatment of tattoos, incision an…

Identification of the head-neck complex in response to trunk horizontal vibration.

A method is proposed for identifying the head-neck complex (HNC) in the seated human body when it is exposed to the trunk horizontal (fore-and-aft) vibration. It is assumed that the HNC only has the anteroposterior (flexion/extension) motion in the sagittal plane. An electrohydraulic vibrator is used as a source of vibration. To generate the trunk horizontal vibration, the trunk of the seated subject is fixed to the seatback. The subjects are exposed to the random vibration at a magnitude of 1.60 ms(-2) rms (root-mean-square) for 50 s. The coherence and frequency response function are then obt…
