[The significance of the phenomenon of dynamic disadaptation scotoma in the early diagnosis of macular dystrophies].

Examinations of 202 patients (337 eyes) with different forms of macular dystrophies, such as idiopathic flat detachment of the retina in the macular area, central sclerotic dystrophy of the retina, tapetoretinal macular degeneration, outcome of local inflammation of pigmented epithelium, post-traumatic central chorioretinitis, etc., allowed to receive data confirming high information value of a method based on the phenomenon of dynamic scotoma of disadaptation as compared with examinations on the Amsler's grid and campimetry. Thus, metamorphopsias were revealed on the Amsler's grid in 193 eyes

Photographic cockpit model for prescribing multifocals.

Recent interest in the relevancy of near vision tests for presbyopic aircrew members has led to the development of a photographic cockpit model. This model is used to prescribe more accurately for flying personnel. Prescriptions can be evaluated by use of trial lenses. This allows the aircrew members to experience the effect of viewing instruments in the cockpit of a C-130 aircraft.

Hereditary optic neuropathies.

Hereditary optic neuropathies comprise a group of disorders of the optic nerve that may be inherited in an autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, X-linked, or maternal familial pattern. These disorders should be included in differential diagnosis of both congenital and acquired vision loss. They often present with a painless, slowly progressive, bilateral decreased vision. As in the case of LHON, a hereditary optic neuropathy may have an acute presentation. Clinical examination is characterized by bilateral decreased visual acuity, central scotomas on visual field testing, decreased color vi

Constriction of the visual field of children after early visual deprivation.

PURPOSE: We measured the extent of the monocular visual fields of children deprived of normal visual experience and examined the influence of the timing and duration of deprivation, of whether deprivation was monocular or binocular, of having patched the fellow eye, and of optical factors. METHODS: The Goldmann perimeter and a 6.4' stimulus of either 31.8 cd/m2 (target 12e) or of 318 cd/m2 (target 14e) were used to test 44 children treated for a dense and central cataract in one (n = 25) or both (n = 31) eyes that developed before 6 years of age. Then, the influence of optical factors was ass

Factors associated with base-in prism treatment outcomes for convergence insufficiency in symptomatic presbyopes.

PURPOSE: The aim was to determine whether baseline measurements of binocular vision are associated with symptoms of convergence insufficiency (CI) both before and after CI treatment with base-in prism in symptomatic presbyopes. We further determined the factors that predicted CI treatment outcomes. METHODS: A total of 29 symptomatic CI subjects aged 45 to 68 years were examined and the following binocular vision measurements were obtained at the baseline: near heterophoria by cover test, associated phoria at near (AP), near point of convergence (NPC) and positive fusional vergence at near (PF

Stratification of the Extent of Visual Impairment Identifies Sex-Specific Degenerative Changes in Retinal Structure and Function during Aging.

BACKGROUND: Initial manifestations of neurodegenerative ocular conditions, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma, often remain undetected in the early stages and can begin after the age of 50 years with the likelihood gradually increasing each year thereafter. This study aimed to explore variances in visual and retinal function and anatomy among C57BL/6J mice, aiming to pinpoint differences between biological age and sex factors that potentially lead to the onset of vision impairment. METHODS: A longitudinal study evaluated visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (

Practical Comparison of a Newly Developed Software-Based Visual Acuity Test and Photoscreening in Japanese Preschool Children.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of vision problems in young children is crucial, as they may lead to lifelong disabilities such as amblyopia and strabismus. However, conducting visual acuity (VA) evaluations in this age group is challenging. We developed novel VA testing software tailored for young children with engaging animal images and sound effects to encourage participation. METHODS: A total of 414 children aged three to five years were included in the study. Each child underwent evaluation using both the newly developed VA testing software and the Spot Vision Screener (SVS, Welch Allyn, USA

Deprivation amblyopia and congenital hereditary cataract.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision associated with decreased visual acuity, poor or absent stereopsis, and suppression of information from one eye.(1,2) Amblyopia may be caused by strabismus (strabismic amblyopia), refractive error (anisometropic amblyopia), or deprivation from obstructed vision (deprivation amblyopia). 1 In the developed world, amblyopia is the most common cause of childhood visual impairment, 3 which reduces quality of life 4 and also almost doubles the lifetime risk of legal blindness.(5, 6) Successful treatment of amblyopia greatly depends on early detect

Microcephaly and Chorioretinopathy Relevance as a Differential Diagnosis.

Microcephaly and chorioretinopathy are genetic disorders that are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. The most frequent ocular manifestation is the presence of lacunar atrophy in the retina and choroid. The diagnosis of this condition can be challenging as several potential causes and related syndromes need to be ruled out. We present two cases of microcephaly and chorioretinopathy in Mexican patients, their clinical characterization, and discuss the differential diagnoses that should be considered. An 8-year-old girl was examined due to a history of decreased vision in both eyes. Fund

The impact of cataract surgery on cognitive function in an aging population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the relationship between cognitive function and cataract surgery, as it is rarely addressed, and yet is becoming increasingly important as the number of elderly people in the world continues to rise. RECENT FINDINGS: From US Census and international data, it is expected that the predicted proportion of people over 65 years of age in a number of countries will increase drastically over a half century. Therefore, the percentage of patients with cataracts and cognitive impairment, which are both age-related diseases, will be expected to rise as well. Although there a
