Comparison of dried milk preparations for babies on sale in 7 European countries. II. Folic acid, vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, and vitamin E.

Four vitamins of the B-complex—thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and folate—were measured in 30 dried milk preparations for babies, representing products of manufacturers in 7 European countries. 7 of the preparations were also assayed for vitamin E. The milks varied widely in their B-vitamin composition. The content of riboflavin ranged from 2·8 to 11·2 μg/g, thiamin from 2·8 to 13·0, vitamin B6 from 1·5 to 12·7, and folate from 0·03 to 1·12. Compared on a basis of equal solids content, all the preparations were considerably richer than mature human milk in thiamin and vitamin B6, and most wer

The discovery of vitamin B(12).

The discovery of vitamin B(12), the elucidation of its role in metabolism, and the effects and treatment of its deficiency occurred in distinct phases over more than 100 years, and it was the subject of two separate Nobel Prizes. The valuable contribution of clinical reports and studies of patients with pernicious anemia throughout the 19th century resulted in enough clinical definition to allow Minot and Murphy to put together the first hallmark study on treatment of the condition, leading them to a Nobel Prize. These researchers were not the first to suggest that an inadequacy of nutrients w

THE ROLE OF DIET IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by chronic inflammation associated with autoimmune damage to myelin and axons leading to neurodegeneration. Although the etiology is not fully understood, some factors that increase the risk of disease have been identified. One of the key elements of multidisciplinary approach to the management of MS is a properly balanced diet, e.g. Swank diet. Its main assumption is to reduce the supply of animal fats in favor of fats of plant origin, which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3. One of the factors i

The role of dietary supplements in inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic immune disorders of unclear aetiology. Dietary deficiencies may be a potential pathogenic factor in their development. Patients often take food supplements without knowledge of any evidence base. We have therefore assessed the evidence for food supplementation in the management of IBD. A PubMed search was performed for the terms Inflammatory bowel disease; nutritional deficiencies; dietary supplements; curcumin; green tea; vitamin D/other vitamins; folic acid; iron; zinc; probiotics; andrographis paniculata; and boswellia serrate. PubMed was used t

Recurrent aphthous ulceration: vitamin B1, B2 and B6 status and response to replacement therapy.

An evaluation of the thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine (vitamin B1, B2 and B6) status of 60 patients with recurrent mouth ulcers was performed. Seventeen patients (28.2%) were found to be deficient in one or more of these vitamins. Replacement therapy of these vitamins was given to a study group of deficient patients and a non-deficient group for one month. At the end of therapy and after a follow-up period of 3 months, only those patients who had a B complex deficiency had a significant sustained clinical improvement in their mouth ulcers. Vitamin B1, B2 and B6 deficiencies should, therefor

Multimodal characterization of a novel mutation causing vitamin B6-responsive gyrate atrophy.

PURPOSE: Gyrate atrophy (GA) is a rare chorioretinal degeneration that results in the deterioration of night and peripheral vision, eventually leading to blindness. The disorder is caused by mutations in the gene encoding ornithine aminotransferase (OAT), causing increased levels of plasma ornithine. Treatment revolves around lowering plasma ornithine levels, with vitamin B6 supplementation being the preferred treatment. Nevertheless, most patients do not respond to this therapy. Here, we report a rare case of vitamin B6-responsive GA caused by a novel mutation in OAT and characterize the pres

[Interactions between markers of endothelial damage (homocysteine and asymmetric dimethylarginine) and antioxidants and B-vitamins in preeclamptic women].

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related pathological condition triggered by an abnormal placentation which produces endothelial dysfunction (ED). ED, in turn, is associated with an increase in homocysteine (hcy) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA); these molecules are also increased when some of the B-vitamins are deficient. It is unclear whether increases in hcy and ADMA during preeclampsia are the result of ED, or the consequence of a B-vitamin deficiency. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hcy, ADMA, folic acid (FA), vitamin B6 and B2 concentrations in patients with preeclampsia. METHODS:

Predictive value of folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: The role of folate, vitamin B(12) and homocysteine levels in depression is not clear. AIMS: To investigate cross-sectional and prospective associations between folate, B(12) and homocysteine levels and late-life depression. METHOD: A total of 732 Korean people aged 65 years or over were evaluated at baseline. Of the 631 persons who were not depressed, 521 (83%) were followed over a period of 2-3 years and incident depression was ascertained with the Geriatric Mental State schedule. Serum folate, serum vitamin B(12) and plasma homocysteine levels were assayed at both baseline and

Simultaneous quantification of seven B vitamins in human faeces by stable isotope label-based high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

B vitamins in the human distal gut are primarily derived from the gut microbiota because daily dietary vitamins are fully absorbed in the small intestine under normal dietary and physiological conditions. Quantitative determination of B vitamins in the distal gut and faecal samples is crucial for understanding the intricate relationship between gut B vitamins, gut microbiota, and host health. In this study, we developed a rapid, robust, and reliable method with a simple extraction procedure for the simultaneous analysis of seven B vitamins in human faeces using high-performance liquid chromato

Folate and vitamin B12 improved alcohol-induced hyperhomocysteinemia in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of combined treatment of folate and vitamin B12 against alcoholic liver disease. METHODS: Male Wistar rats weighing about 160 g were divided into four groups: an ethanol group fed an ethanol liquid diet; a control group pair-fed an isoenergetic diet without ethanol; an ethanol and vitamin group fed an ethanol-containing diet that was supplemented with folate (10 mg/kg of body weight per day) and vitamin B12 (0.5 mg/kg of body weight per day); and a control and vitamin group fed an isoenergetic diet without ethanol,

[The use of Magne B6 in order to increase compensatory-adaptive possibilities in youths with primary mitral valve prolapse].

The aim of the study--to estimate the effect of therapy with Magne 6 on the indices of cardiac hemodynamics, tolerance to physical load, activity of antioxidant protection enzymes and grade of hypoxia in youths with 1 grade mitral valve prolapse (MVP) without regurgitation. In 73 cases with impaired compensatory adaptive possibilities the extent of main syndromes of autonomic dystonia and state of cardiac hemodynamic indices were evaluated. The activity of catalase (C), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lactate (L) and pyruvate (P) level were detected in red blood cells,

The vitamin status of Viennese school children aged 11-12 years.

In 830 Viennese school children of both sexes, aged 11-12 years, plasma carotene, retinol and alpha-tocopherol, erythrocyte transketolase activity (alpha ETK), erythrocyte glutathione-reductase (alpha EGR) and erythrocyte glutamic acid oxalacetic acid transaminase (alpha EGOT) were determined. The mean alpha ETK value indicated inadequate thiamine supply. The vitamin status was better in boys and in children of higher socio-economic classes than in girls and in the low income group, with respect to beta-carotene, retinol, tocopherol, thiamine and riboflavin. The opposite situation was true in

Nutrition in the vision of children.

The first section of this paper reviews some of the effects of fetal and postnatal nutritional status on central nervous system development. It is seen that early malnutrition can be an important determinant of visual performance in children. The second section described the key role of vitamin A in the visual process. The consequences of primary and secondary vitamin A deficiencies are considered. The third section discusses some effects of diet on vision, including the role of the B vitamins and vitamin C.
