The effects of long-term prenatal exposure to 900, 1800, and 2100 MHz electromagnetic field radiation on myocardial tissue of rats.

It is well-known that wireless communication technologies facilitate human life. However, the harmful effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation on the human body should not be ignored. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of long-term, prenatal exposure to EMF radiation on the myocardium of rats at varying durations. Overall, 18 pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned into six groups (n = 3 in each group). In all groups other than the control group, three pregnant rats were exposed to EMF radiation (900, 1800 and 2100 MHz) for 6, 12 and 24 h over 20 days. After delivery, th

Electronic Skin Wearable Sensors for Detecting Lumbar-Pelvic Movements.

BACKGROUND: A nanomaterial-based electronic-skin (E-Skin) wearable sensor has been successfully used for detecting and measuring body movements such as finger movement and foot pressure. The ultrathin and highly sensitive characteristics of E-Skin sensor make it a suitable alternative for continuously out-of-hospital lumbar-pelvic movement (LPM) monitoring. Monitoring these movements can help medical experts better understand individuals' low back pain experience. However, there is a lack of prior studies in this research area. Therefore, this paper explores the potential of E-Skin sensors to

A brain-spine interface alleviating gait deficits after spinal cord injury in primates.

Spinal cord injury disrupts the communication between the brain and the spinal circuits that orchestrate movement. To bypass the lesion, brain-computer interfaces have directly linked cortical activity to electrical stimulation of muscles, and have thus restored grasping abilities after hand paralysis. Theoretically, this strategy could also restore control over leg muscle activity for walking. However, replicating the complex sequence of individual muscle activation patterns underlying natural and adaptive locomotor movements poses formidable conceptual and technological challenges. Recently,

A multi-pad electrode based functional electrical stimulation system for restoration of grasp.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied via transcutaneous electrodes is a common rehabilitation technique for assisting grasp in patients with central nervous system lesions. To improve the stimulation effectiveness of conventional FES, we introduce multi-pad electrodes and a new stimulation paradigm. METHODS: The new FES system comprises an electrode composed of small pads that can be activated individually. This electrode allows the targeting of motoneurons that activate synergistic muscles and produce a functional movement. The new stimulation paradigm allows asynchron

Nanofiber-assisted construction of flexible sponge sensors with engineered biomimetic structures for wearable devices and gesture recognition.

Porous flexible piezoresistive sensors are commonly used in wearable devices. To achieve excellent deformation capability, sensitive resistance changes, and stable signal input, such sensors must possess a robust skeletal structure and abundant pores. This not only effectively distributes external stress but also provides a larger contact area for conductive fillers. Inspired by leaf veins and natural concrete structures, this study developed a flexible sponge sensor with a “column-plate” architecture. This sponge utilizes sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol as “mortar” for its skeletal fram

Dual-mode sensing of pulse and sweat electrolytes via integrated hydrogel-based biosensors for health management.

With the rapid development of wearable health monitoring technology, real-time, non-invasive, and multi-modal physiological signal acquisition has become a key requirement for improving disease warning and health management levels. Here, we demonstrate a dual-mode wearable health monitoring system based on functionalized hydrogel, which realizes accurate detection of ionic concentrations in human sweat and stable extraction of pulse wave signals. A porous hydrogel sweat sensing platform based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is designed to solve the problems of low electrolyte penetration efficiency

A novel low cost minimally invasive surgical system allows for the translation of modern pediatric surgical technology to low- and middle-income nations.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for pediatric surgical humanitarian care. The role of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in these environments with its reduction in pain and wound care, operative time, length of hospitalization, and morbidity is logical. However, the costs, logistics and feasibility of MIS in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) can be challenging. Our goal was to develop a new low cost rapidly deployable minimally invasive surgical system (RDMIS) for use during remote pediatric general surgical (GPS) missions in LMIC. METHODS: RDMIS system components consist of a unive

Recent developments in wireless capsule endoscopy imaging: Compression and summarization techniques.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) can be viewed as an innovative technology introduced in the medical domain to directly visualize the digestive system using a battery-powered electronic capsule. It is considered a desirable substitute for conventional digestive tract diagnostic methods for a comfortable and painless inspection. Despite many benefits, WCE results in poor video quality due to low frame resolution and diagnostic accuracy. Many research groups have presented diversified, low-complexity compression techniques to economize battery power consumed in the radio-frequency transmission o

Wireless 3D Surgical Navigation and Tracking System With 100μm Accuracy Using Magnetic-Field Gradient-Based Localization.

This paper describes a high-resolution 3D navigation and tracking system using magnetic field gradients, that can replace X-Ray fluoroscopy in high-precision surgeries. Monotonically varying magnetic fields in X, Y and Z directions are created in the field-of-view (FOV) to produce magnetic field gradients, which encode each spatial point uniquely. Highly miniaturized, wireless and battery-less devices, capable of measuring their local magnetic field, are designed to sense the gradient field. One such device can be attached to an implant inside the body and another to a surgical tool, such that

Altered Cardiovascular Defense to Hypotensive Stress in the Chronically Hypoxic Fetus.

The hypoxic fetus is at greater risk of cardiovascular demise during a challenge, but the reasons behind this are unknown. Clinically, progress has been hampered by the inability to study the human fetus non-invasively for long period of gestation. Using experimental animals, there has also been an inability to induce gestational hypoxia while recording fetal cardiovascular function as the hypoxic pregnancy is occurring. We use novel technology in sheep pregnancy that combines induction of controlled chronic hypoxia with simultaneous, wireless recording of blood pressure and blood flow signals

Electromagnetic field exposure assessment in Europe radiofrequency fields (10 MHz-6 GHz).

Average levels of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of the general public in Europe are difficult to summarize, as exposure levels have been reported differently in those studies in which they have been measured, and a large proportion of reported measurements were very low, sometimes falling below detection limits of the equipment used. The goal of this paper is to present an overview of the scientific literature on RF EMF exposure in Europe and to characterize exposure within the European population. A comparative analysis of the results of spot or long-term RF EM

The Impact of Music and Noise-Cancellation on Sedation Requirements During Total Knee Replacement: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Music has emerged as a well-received medical intervention. Patients may be uncomfortable during total joint replacement, which can result in high sedation requirements. These requirements place elderly patients at risk for delirium. This study compares the effect of noise-cancellation versus music medicine on sedation requirements, pain, and opioid consumption during elective total knee replacement. METHODS: This prospective, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial was conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center between July 2018 and July 2019. All participants

A Wearable Neuromonitoring Platform to Map Motor and Neural Biomarkers of Gait Dysfunction in People with Parkinson's Disease across Daily Life.

A majority of individuals with advanced Parkinson's disease develop severe gait and balance deficits that significantly restrict mobility, independence, and quality of life. Despite impressive technological advances, gait impairments remain poorly understood and notoriously hard to treat. Most attempts to characterize gait deficits or to identify neural biomarkers of gait dysfunction have been confined to well-controlled, sophisticated laboratory settings. However, such environments fail to capture many critical contextual factors that exacerbate gait deficits in real-world conditions, such as

Emerging Electrochemical and Biosensing Platforms for Troponin I and B-Type Natriuretic Peptide: A Comprehensive Insight into Next-Generation Cardiac Diagnostics.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, demanding rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective diagnostic technologies. For instance, Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) are important myocardial infarction and heart failure biomarkers, respectively. Traditional immunoassay-based methods, although accurate, often suffer from complex procedures, high cost, and delayed response times. In this context, hybrid nanocomposite-based electrochemical biosensors have emerged as powerful alternatives, integrating plasmonic nanostructures, graphene

Complementary approaches and advanced technologies in ameliorating rate of wound healing.

Wound healing is a complex, multi-phase process that encompasses haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Disruptions in this process, caused by conditions such as diabetes or extensive burns, can result in persistent wounds and atypical scarring. Although traditional therapies (e.g., antiseptics, dressings, and antibacterial agents) are essential, innovative and supplementary methods such as cell therapy, gene therapy, bioactive delivery systems, and biomaterial-based tactics have arisen as more effective alternatives. These improvements facilitate healin
