When shared concept cells support associations: Theory of overlapping memory engrams.

Assemblies of neurons, called concepts cells, encode acquired concepts in human Medial Temporal Lobe. Those concept cells that are shared between two assemblies have been hypothesized to encode associations between concepts. Here we test this hypothesis in a computational model of attractor neural networks. We find that for concepts encoded in sparse neural assemblies there is a minimal fraction cmin of neurons shared between assemblies below which associations cannot be reliably implemented; and a maximal fraction cmax of shared neurons above which single concepts can no longer be retrieved.

Associations between cognitive impairment and illness awareness in fully remitted bipolar outpatients.

The euthymic state of bipolar disorder is often characterized by impaired cognitive function. In this investigation, we hypothesized that subjective cognitive function is impaired and illness awareness is inadequate and we further explored the associations among cognitive complaints, objective cognitive functions, and current illness awareness in Japanese patients. Twenty-seven patients in remission and 27 healthy subjects were recruited in this study. The Japanese version of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) and Scale to Assess Unawareness in Mental Disord

Understanding mental health in developmental dyslexia through a neurodiversity lens: The mediating effect of school-connectedness on anxiety, depression and conduct problems.

Dyslexia, a neurocognitive difference characterised by poor word-reading, is associated with elevated risk for internalising (e.g., anxiety) and externalising (e.g., aggression) mental health concerns, the reasons are largely unknown. We took a neurodiversity perspective and explored whether school-connectedness mediated these associations. A total of 283 primary school children (87 with dyslexia) and their caregivers (95.4% mothers) completed a battery of well-validated connectedness and mental health measures. Two mediation models (one for child-report and one for caregiver-report) tested di

Association between early alcohol use and academic achievement among primary school children in Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child alcohol use is a public health concern in Uganda. This study assessed academic achievement skills and their association with alcohol use among primary school children in Mbale district, Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed academic achievement skills (word reading, sentence comprehension, spelling, and math computation) in 6–13-year-old primary school children using the Wide Range Achievement Test, Fifth Edition (WRAT-5). Participants from grades 1–7, were randomly selected from 38 primary schools. Raw WRAT-5 scores were standardized to age- and sex-adjusted z

Four-year trajectories of episodic memory decline in mid-late life by living arrangements: a cross-national comparison between China and England.

BACKGROUND: There is mixed evidence on the association between living arrangements and mid-late life cognition, which may be due to distinct familial arrangements and preferences between populations. To address such heterogeneity, we assessed these associations in China and England. METHODS: Four-year trajectories of episodic memory scores (0-20, word recall test) by living arrangements (living with partner only, living with partner and children/grandchildren, living with no partner but with children/grandchildren, and living alone) were estimated using latent growth curve modelling for men a

Implicit cocaine associations in active cocaine users and controls.

Implicit and explicit cocaine-related cognitions were assessed in a sample of 16 cocaine-dependent poly-substance abusers and 16 age, gender, and SES-matched controls. Implicit associations were assessed with four unipolar versions of the Implicit Association Test (IAT), assessing associations between cocaine and positive affect, negative affect, arousal and sedation, relative to the contrast category "sports". Explicit cognitions were assessed with a questionnaire using the same words as the IAT. As expected, cocaine users scored higher on explicit arousal and lower on explicit sedation expec

Development of a Child Articulation Screening Test Within Digital Therapeutics: Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders are common in children and are associated with an increased risk of academic reading difficulties. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need for remote and digitalized assessment tools. In South Korea, standardized instruments such as the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonation and Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for children are widely used but have limitations, including reliance on face-to-face evaluation, and the absence of automated scoring. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and establish the content validity of an articulation

[Writing in prodromal and mild dementia with Lewy bodies: an exploratory and preliminary study].

UNLABELLED: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common form of dementia in elderly patients. In the early stages, it shares many clinical and pathological features with other neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, making early and accurate diagnosis challenging. While written production has been shown to be sensible to pathological aging even before the onset of spoken language disorders, no research has been conducted on this aspect in DLB patients, particularly at the prodromal or mild stages. OBJECTIVE: In order to better characterize their cognitive profiles,

[Early clinical signs of dementia in the elderly].

Clinical signs and symptoms preceding the onset of dementia are sometimes acute, such as mood disorders often associated with hypochondriacal traits and cognitive slowing, sudden and serious suicide attempts, character and conduct disorders contrasting with the previous state, and psychotic disorders presenting as pathological mistrust, or ill-structured prejudice or persecution. Most forerunning symptoms reflect a progressive deterioration of cognitive functions over a long period, that have been masked by various coping strategies used by the patient with the spouse's help. Progressive cogni

Neural signatures of test-potentiated learning in parietal cortex.

Testing, or retrieval practice, is beneficial for long-term memory both directly, by enhancing performance on tested information, and indirectly, by facilitating learning from subsequent encounters with the information. Although a wealth of behavioral research has examined the "testing effect," neuroimaging has provided little insight regarding the potential mechanisms that underlie the benefits of retrieval practice. Here, fMRI was used to examine the effects of retrieval practice on later study trials. Human subjects studied pairs of associated words, which were then tested, restudied, or ne

The Bouba-Kiki Effect in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The bouba-kiki (BK) effect refers to associations between visual shapes and auditory pseudonames. Thus, when tested, people tend to associate the pseudowords bouba and kiki with round or spiky shapes, respectively. This association requires cross-modal sensory integration. The ability to integrate information from different sensory modalities is crucial for speech development. A clinical population that may be impaired in cross-modal sensory integration is children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). The purpose of this study was to examine the involvement of cross-modal sensory i

Developmental Effects in Children's Ability to Benefit From F0 Differences Between Target and Masker Speech.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the extent to which school-age children benefit from fundamental frequency (F0) differences between target words and competing two-talker speech, and (2) assess whether this benefit changes with age. It was predicted that while children would be more susceptible to speech-in-speech masking compared to adults, they would benefit from differences in F0 between target and masker speech. A second experiment was conducted to evaluate the relationship between frequency discrimination thresholds and the ability to benefit from target/maske

A neurobehavioral examination of individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder using a fronto-striatal model of dysfunction.

The repetitive, stereotyped, and obsessive behaviors that characterize autism may in part be attributable to disruption of the region of the fronto-striatal system, which mediates executive abilities. Neuropsychological testing has shown that children with autism exhibit set-shifting deficiencies on tests such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting task but show normal inhibitory ability on variants of the Stroop color-word test. According to Minshew and Goldstein's multiple primary deficit theory, the complexity of the executive functioning task is important in determining the performance of individua

Multisensory simultaneity-judgment training and speech comprehension in patients with schizophrenia.

Multisensory integration allows the brain to align auditory and visual signals in time, a process critical for accurate perception. This process has been shown to be abnormal in schizophrenia (SZ); patients show a wider temporal binding window (TBW), perceiving asynchronous inputs as simultaneous over longer intervals. Such deficits have been linked to hallucinations, disorganized symptoms, and impaired speech comprehension in SZ. While prior studies suggest that audiovisual simultaneity-judgment training (SJT) can recalibrate temporal perception in healthy adults, its efficacy in SZ has not y
