Genital filariasis is common in endemic areas of the world. However, filariasis cannot be eliminated from the differential diagnosis of scrotal swellings, as international travel is more frequent. We report a case in a patient in London, UK.

Diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis for epidemiological studies is an area of science that has been greatly modernized over the last two decades. Recent developments and the introduction of new technologies have led to the replacement of traditional diagnostic methods that were insensitive, tedious and often impractical with molecular biology techniques that have considerable potential for field use. This paper reviews some of these major new techniques and the applications of molecular diagnosis in the field of lymphatic filariasis.

The developmental velocity of Wucheria bancrofti larvae was investigated in mosquito strains with different susceptibility to this filarial species. High susceptibility of the vector strains favoured fast filarial development, e.g. between 17.1 and 25.9% of all discovered larvae on day 13 p.i. had already migrated to the head and mouth parts of the more and partly even highly susceptible Anopheles gambiae, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti, respectively, whereas between 0 and 3.4% infective larvae had reached the head in the less susceptible Culex strains. On day 15 p.i. in all

Malaria and filariasis are mosquito-borne diseases caused by protozoal and nematode parasites, respectively. Despite different vectors, they can occur together under suitable conditions in endemic regions. In our case, microfilariae were incidentally discovered during a blood film examination for malaria. Accurate detection of microfilariae, especially in cases of low parasitemia, requires multiple blood smears and consideration of Wuchereria bancrofti's nocturnal periodicity, with blood collection ideally performed at night when parasitemia levels are highest. The presence of eosinophilia in …

The sequence diversity of natural and laboratory populations of Brugia pahangi and Brugia malayi was assessed with Illumina resequencing followed by mapping in order to identify single nucleotide variants and insertions/deletions. In natural and laboratory Brugia populations, there is a lack of sequence diversity on chromosome X relative to the autosomes (πX/πA = 0.2), which is lower than the expected (πX/πA = 0.75). A reduction in diversity is also observed in other filarial nematodes with neo-X chromosome fusions in the genera Onchocerca and Wuchereria, but not those without neo-X chromosome…

Lymphatic filariasis is a major public health problem in the developing countries. In India, around 90% of the cases are attributed to Wuchereria bancrofti species morphologically identified as sheathed parasites with tail tip free of nuclei. Microfilariae have been described in urine specimens from patients with chylous and achylous hematuria as well as in a spectrum of other body fluids. Case reports describe their presence in aspirates from numerous neoplasms. However, their association with urothelial carcinoma in urine sediment has been rather rare with only three cases described previous…
