The responses to therapy of 29 patients in septic shock are described. Patients received controlled plasma volume expansion followed by infusions of norepinephrine, dobutamine, and dopamine to achieve appropriate therapeutic goals. Increases in oxygen delivery (Do2) from 605 +/- 40 (SEM) to 843 +/- 27 ml/min-m2 (p less than .001) were associated with increases in oxygen consumption (Vo2) from 130 +/- 6.8 to 169 +/- 6.2 ml/min.m2 (p less than .001). In a study designed to determine the penetration of sulbactam into the central nervous system, a single intramuscular dose of 0.5-1.0 g was given to 19 patients: nine with viral meningitis and 10 with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Eighteen adults were studied an average of 18.5 years after the diagnosis of juvenile dermatomyositis had been made. This study examined whether training using a nonverbal auditory-visual matching task had a remedial effect on reading skills in developmental dyslexia. The pretest/post-test design was used with Swedish children (N= 41), between the ages of 7 and 12. Training comprised twice-weekly sessions of 15 minutes, over eight weeks. Rejection and hostility scores of mothers whose sons had dropped out of school and of mothers whose sons were in good standing academically formed non-overlapping distributions. All mothers of drop-outs had higher hostility and rejection scores than mothers whose sons were doing well academically. Scores of mothers whose sons were still in school, but who were experiencing academic problems, fell midway between these two groups and were significantly different from both. Using bivariate and logistic regression analysis, we explored psychosocial correlates of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use in a sample of 2,257 teenage military dependents. We built separate regression models for males and females to explain triers and users of SLT. Results show female and male triers share five factors regarding SLT use--parental and peer approval, trying smoking, relatives using SLT, and athletic team membership. The smoking behaviour of 665 children aged 12-15 years with special educational needs was compared with that of a control group of 842 children in mainstream education. Each child was interviewed using a structured questionnaire and reported smoking behaviour was validated against scores on a carbon monoxide monitor. Despite extensive research, our knowledge about adolescent parasuicide, why its incidence is currently so high and how to predict it remains incomplete. In the past research often focused on aetiological factors and long-range prediction. In this article short-term aetiological variables relating to both immediate precipitants and psychiatric diagnoses in a sample of 159 adolescents who attempted suicide are explored. The findings should contribute to a clearer understanding of the build-up to the parasuicidal crisis, the consequent level of disturbance and its treatment.

Twenty-six children with primary brain tumors were studied prospectively with regard to their sensorimotor, intellectual, academic, and emotional status. Serial evaluations were conducted after surgery (pre-irradiation) and six months after the completion of radiation therapy. The timing of the second evaluation was chosen so as to antedate the late effects of irradiation.
