The relationship between personality type and style of alcohol use.

Two hundred fifty male, alcoholic VA inpatients were administered the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) and the Alcohol Use Inventory (AUI). A cluster analysis, based on the scales of the MCMI, yielded three clusters: Cluster 1 was the smallest and was described by the least overall psychopathology. Cluster 2 had significant elevations on Antisocial, Narcissistic, Paranoid, Drug and Alcohol Abuse scales. Cluster 3 was the largest and had significant elevations on Avoidant, Schizoid, Dependent, Passive-Aggressive, Anxiety, Dysthymia, and Alcohol Abuse scales.

[The criteria of histological activity and the prognosis in precirrhotic alcoholic hepatopathies].

The work deals with a group of 212 patients suffering from various forms of precirrhotic alcoholic liver disease and includes a period of 8.5 years (January 1981-June 1989). At least two liver biopsies were performed in all patients. according to the histological diagnosis, the patients were distributed into 6 subgroups: simple hepatic steatosis--24 cases (11.3%), hepatic fibrosis--40 cases (18.8%), hepatic steatofibrosis--69 cases (32.5%), acute alcoholic hepatitis--18 cases (8.5%), chronic active hepatitis--43 cases (20.3%) and chronic persisting hepatitis--18 cases (8.5%). [Cerebral beriberi with ophthalmoplegia as the leading symptom in an alcoholic patient].

Author has noticed bilateral ophthalmoplegia in consequence of B1 avitaminosis due to alcoholism. Recognition of the cerebral beriberi with ophthalmoplegia as a leading symptom (Wernicke's encephalopathy) is easy. The importance of the diagnosis is that this life threatening condition can be abolished promptly by the administration of Vitamin B1. On the basis of the frequent occurrence of alcoholism it seems likely, that several similar beriberi cases could be found nowadays.

Wife assault among VA alcohol rehabilitation patients.

In a study of wife assault, the Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (SMAST) and the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) were administered to 218 patients in an alcohol rehabilitation program for military veterans. More than one-third of the patients reported assaulting their wives or partners in the previous year, and one-fifth reported committing severe assaults. However, a subsample of 33 wives or partners of the patients were almost twice as likely as their male partners to report assault. An examination of clinical records of 25 patients indicated that clinicians had identified some sort of

General practitioners' experiences of patients with drug and alcohol problems.

Convergent focus groups, a qualitative research methodology, were used to determine what general practitioners considered to be the main obstacles and disincentives to the effective management of persons with drug and alcohol problems. Seven groups were conducted, involving 44 general practitioners whose practices were based in representative parts of metropolitan Sydney and a rural area of New South Wales. The study revealed that most doctors are not as threatened, resistant or pessimistic about drug and alcohol intervention as much of the previous work in the area would suggest. However, the

Prenatal alcohol exposure and cognitive development in the preschool years.

The teratogenic effects of drinking during pregnancy on cognitive development were investigated in a cohort of disadvantaged mother-infant pairs. Three indices associated with maternal alcohol use were related to comprehensive cognitive measures obtained during five in-home assessments through age four years, ten months. Birth weight and a tally of craniofacial anomalies were also evaluated as early indicators of fetal alcohol damage. Multiple analyses relating the alcohol and cognitive measures provided no evidence of an adverse alcohol effect on cognitive development in the absence of Fetal

Can methionine and zinc prevent the embryopathic effects of alcohol?

Alcoholism is a major and world-wide health problem. A characteristic pattern of congenital defects, known as the fetal alcohol syndrome, has been detected in the offspring of mothers who are chronic alcoholics. The mechanism underlying the teratogenic effects of ethanol is not known. An important hypothesis is that ethanol becomes teratogenic by inducing maternal/fetal nutritional deficiencies. Nutrients affected by ethanol consumption include methionine and zinc. Epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that zinc deficiency is associated with both fetal growth retardation and deve…

Effects of barbiturates on GABA system: comparison to alcohol and benzodiazepines.

Central nervous system depressants, e.g. barbiturates, alcohol and benzodiazepines, have a wide spectrum of activity in humans and animals. Evidence accumulated suggests that some of the pharmacological actions exerted by these agents may be mediated through GABA system by mimicking GABAergic transmission. This proceeding briefly summarizes the evidence presented in our previous review (Yu S and Ho Ik: Alcohol 7: 261, 1990) as to how the GABA system plays a part in the barbiturate actions and the development of tolerance to and physical dependence on barbiturates. The comparisons of the effect

[Severity of injury of alcohol intoxicated pedestrians in street traffic].

The evaluation of 251 autopsy cases of pedestrians who suffered fatal accidents in road traffic documents that the influence of alcohol entails an additional risk of injury for pedestrians in motor car accidents. In particular, severe trauma to the head, thorax and abdomen occur, whilst injuries to the pelvis and limbs are generally not more serious than in sober pedestrians. In the classical collision constellation of the pedestrian at the front end of cars, the upper part of the body is evidently especially endangered in the further movement phase. This phenomenon might be connected above al

Effects of alcohol on natural resistance to Ancylostoma caninum in mice.

Experiments were performed to study the effect of alcohol on natural immunity of Swiss albino mice during Ancylostoma caninum infection. Natural resistance is lowered in alcoholic mice; 40% alcohol by mouth produced significant effect after 20 daily injections. The effect of the drug on natural immunity depended upon the concentration and the period of consumption. Animals retained maximum number of larvae during alcohol treatment.

The consumption of tobacco, alcohol and the risk of adenocarcinoma in Barrett's oesophagus.

The relationship between tobacco, alcohol and the risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma in Barrett's oesophagus was evaluated in an endoscopy-clinic-based case-control study of 30 histologically confirmed cases of adenocarcinoma and 140 controls with Barrett's oesophagus but no evidence of malignant lesions. Among the cases, 18 (60%) were non-smokers and 14 (47%) non-drinkers, the corresponding proportions in the controls being 52% and 44%. Thus, there was no apparent relation between tobacco, alcohol and the risk of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus, the age- and sex-adjusted point estimates bein

Acute effects of alcohol and food intake on cardiac performance.

Alcohol and food intake induce changes in LV performance which can be evaluated by radionuclide cardiographic methods. Alcohol probably exerts its effects by a direct action of ethanol in the blood on the myocardium, while the postprandial hemodynamic changes are related to the effects of food in the intestine. Alcohol intoxication causes a dose-dependent impairment of LV emptying at rest, whereas compensatory mechanisms other than an increased sympathetic nervous activity counterbalance this effect during exercise. In patients with coronary artery disease, alcohol induces only small changes i

Structured outpatient treatment of alcohol vs. drug dependencies.

This chapter describes the rationale, indications, design, and use of a structured outpatient treatment approach as an effective alternative to residential treatment for alcohol and drug dependencies. An increasing demand for outpatient treatment services is being created by a combination of clinical and economic factors, including the influx of employed drug abusers who do not need or desire residential care and mounting financial pressures to contain health care costs. To be effective as a primary treatment modality, outpatient programs must be highly structured and intensive and able to dea
