INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a progressive, slow loss of dopaminergic neurones in the substance nigra. Although the cause of this neurone loss is unknown, at the present time many papers suggest oxidative stress (OS), secondary to dopaminergic metabolism, as an aetiopathogenic factor of PD. Therefore study of the part played by OS in this would permit the use of antioxidants (AO) as another possibility for treatment of the disease. It would also be a major step forward in the search for possible biological markers.

Precise localization of xanthine oxidase activity might elucidate physiological functions of the enzyme, which have not been established so far. Because xanthine oxidase is sensitive to chemical (aldehyde) fixation, we have localized its activity in unfixed cryostat sections of rat duodenum, oesophagus and tongue mounted on a semipermeable membrane. Benzyl alcohol, a bacteriostatic agent found in many parenteral preparations, has been implicated as the agent responsible for precipitating "the gasping syndrome" in premature neonates. To investigate this toxicity, benzyl alcohol was administered intraperitoneally to adult (23-28 g) and neonatal (2-7 g) CD-1 male mice. Gross behavioral changes were monitored. The prevalence of work-related wheeze and breathlessness was measured in factory employees manufacturing flux-cored solder. The effects of lithium and disulfiram on the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) system and hexobarbital (HX)-induced hypnosis were studied. Treatment with lithium significantly prolonged HX hypnosis. Disulfiram, a potent inhibitor of brain aldehyde dehydrogenase, also produced a prolongation of HX hypnosis.
