Surgery of Kerion, a Nightmare for Nondermatologists.

Kerion is an inflammatory type of tinea capitis characterized by swelling and alopecia of the scalp, which could be mistaken as bacterial infection. It occurs most frequently in children. We report a 10-year-old child whose kerion was misdiagnosed as bacterial abscess and unnecessarily incised. Later, her condition was rediagnosed as kerion based on clinical appearance and potassium hydroxide wet mount. The lesions resolved completely with systemic antifungal treatment, griseofulvin, leaving residual scarring alopecia. The delay in the proper diagnosis and inappropriate treatment of this patie

Lipedematous scalp. A rare entity in the pediatric ageLipedema de cuero cabelludo: una entidad infrecuente en pediatría.

Lipedematous scalp is an uncommon entity of unknown etiology, rarely described in the pediatric age. It is characterized by boggy thickening of the scalp predominantly located at the vertex and occiput, which acquires a cotton-like consistency. This condition is palpable rather than visible. It is a casual finding because it is usually asymptomatic, although it may involve alopecia, pruritus, or dysesthesia. We report a 10-year-old girl with lipedematous scalp without alopecia. Sonographic and MRI findings confirmed the diagnosis of lipidematous scalp.  El lipedema de cuero cabelludo o cuero c

Approach to hair loss in women of color.

Hair loss in women of color represents a unique diagnostic challenge that requires a systematic approach. In women of color, clinical examination of the hair and scalp is most helpful when performed first and used to guide subsequent history-taking to arrive at a clinical assessment. The most common hair problems in women of color are hair breakage, traction alopecia, and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. A careful detailed clinical examination and history will guide the clinician to appropriate counseling and management. It is important to recognize that a patient may have more than o

Association between Androgenic Hair Patterns and Prostate Cancer Risk in South Indian Men: A Case-control Study from the Cauvery Delta.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide. Androgens influence both prostate growth and hair patterns. Androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) and excessive male-pattern body hair (hypertrichosis) have been hypothesized as clinical markers of long-term androgen exposure. Previous Western studies have reported mixed results on whether early-onset or severe androgenic alopecia correlates with increased prostate cancer risk. Data in South Indian (Dravidian) populations is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between androgenic hypertr

Evaluating the accuracy of patient-reported hair outcomes versus trichometric measurements in PRP therapy.

Monitoring both subjective and objective responses to alopecia treatment is critical for assessing patient perception and therapeutic efficacy. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a widely used treatment for alopecia, particularly androgenetic alopecia (AGA), yet the correlation between patient-reported outcomes and trichometric measurements remains poorly defined. This retrospective study analyzed data from 56 alopecia patients treated with PRP at NYU Langone Health between November 2017 and March 2025. Patients were categorized as "improved," "stable," or "worse" based on self-assessments,

Necrosulfonamide promotes hair growth and ameliorates DHT-induced hair growth inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia affects patients' appearance and psychology. Mixed-lineage kinase domain-like pseudokinase (MLKL)-mediated necroptosis plays a role in various skin diseases, but its effect on hair growth is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of MLKL on hair growth and its regulatory mechanisms and to determine the potential clinical value of Necrosulfonamide (NSA, a MLKL-targeting inhibitor) in promoting hair growth and counteracting dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inhibition of hair growth. METHODS: The expression level of MLKL was detected in the scalp of androgenetic alopecia (

Anti-androgenetic effect of diphlorethohydroxycarmalol on testosterone-induced hair loss by inhibiting 5α-reductase and promoting Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in human dermal papilla cells.

Diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC), a marine phlorotannin compound derived from the brown alga Ishige okamurae, has been known to have a variety of biological effects. Recently, marine resources have been highlighted by their effects on ameliorating alopecia and related hair loss. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential of DPHC isolated from I. okamurae as a hair loss treatment through examination of its anti-androgenic alopecia effects. Molecular docking analysis predicted that DPHC can be used as a 5α-reductase inhibitor superior to finasteride, which has traditionally been u

Atrichia Congenita with Papular Lesions: A Report of Rare Case Showing "Cluster of Stars' Appearance on Dermoscopy".

Atrichia congenita with papular lesions (APL) is a rare autosomal recessive form of alopecia with multiple keratin cysts. A 12-year-old boy with generalized alopecia who was unsuccessfully treated with multiple topical and systemic medications was brought to our department. Thorough history, examination and investigations confirmed the diagnosis of APL as the patient fulfilled the proposed criteria required to diagnose the condition. He also had a distinct previously observed dermoscopic clue "Cluster of Stars" appearance. The present case is reported to familiarize the clinician about this ra

Hair and nail diseases in the mature patient.

The elderly population is growing, lifespans are increasing, and a greater emphasis on geriatric care is being implemented in hospital systems. With a higher percentage of the population living longer, hair and nail diseases associated with the advanced stages of life are becoming more prevalent. Common hair diseases in the elderly include androgenetic alopecia, senile alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp. Nail diseases associated with advanced age include onychomycosis, brittle nails, onychocryptosis, onychoclavus, onychogryphosis, subungual hemat

Identification of a genetic defect in the hairless gene in atrichia with papular lesions: evidence for phenotypic heterogeneity among inherited atrichias.

Recently, we showed that atrichia with papular lesions (APL), a rare inherited form of alopecia, is transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait in a large inbred kindred of Israeli-Arab origin. Furthermore, we mapped the APL locus to a 5-cM region of chromosome 8p12 in this family. The human "hairless" gene is a candidate target gene for the disease mutation because it maps to the APL locus and because it was recently found to be mutated in a related but clinically distinct form of alopecia known as "alopecia universalis" or "congenital alopecia." In the present study, the coding sequence of t

Trichoepitheliomatous infiltration of the skin simulating leprosy.

A 13-year-old girl had a six-year history of infiltrated erythematous plaques on the face, alopecia of the eyebrows, diffuse alopecia of the scalp, and absence of body hair. Histologically, the lesions on the face and body corresponded to trichoepitheliomas. The lesions on the face clinically simulated lepromatous leprosy. This case probably represents an entity not previously described.

Nonsurgical therapy for hair loss.

This article is an update of the currently available options for medical therapies to treat androgenetic alopecia in men and women. Emerging novel therapeutic modalities with potential for treating these patients are discussed. Because androgenetic alopecia is progressive in nature, stabilization of the process using medical therapy is an important adjunct to any surgical hair-restoration plan.
