Early life adversity in the form of child maltreatment (CM) is a transdiagnostic risk factor for suicidal ideation and behavior (SIB), yet its heterogeneity and relevance for lifetime versus acute SIB and psychotherapy outcomes remain unclear. In an observational cohort of 240 high-risk adults with borderline personality disorder (42.5%) or persistent depressive disorder (57.5%), lifetime and acute SIB were assessed using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. CM profiles were derived using a data-driven clustering approach based on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Associations between

Parkinson's disease depression (PDD) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), characterized by complex neurobiological mechanisms that remain poorly understood. This study identifies ZBP1-mediated PANoptosis as a critical mechanism linking neuroinflammation, neuronal loss, and depressive behaviors in PDD. Using a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PDD mouse model, we observed significant reductions in dopaminergic projections from the substantia nigra (SN) to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), accompanied by neuronal loss and depressive-like behaviors. Microglial activation

A burgeoning body of evidence suggests a higher prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors among adolescents. This study aimed to examine the comorbid internalizing symptoms and suicidal behaviors, along with associations between dissociative experiences and suicide risk in adolescents attending a psychiatric outpatient unit in Ankara, Türkiye. The study included 81 adolescents aged 12-18 years, who engaged in NSSI and sought treatment at a psychiatric outpatient clinic. Psychiatric evaluations were conducted through semi-structured clinical interviews. NSSI behaviors were assessed

Children with oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) represent a heterogeneous group. Within this group, a subtype of ODD has been identified for children with primarily angry/irritable mood symptoms who are at risk for developing mood and anxiety disorders. Despite the prevalence of anger and mood difficulties in children with ODD, evidence-based treatments for disruptive behavior disorders have primarily emphasized providing caregivers more effective parenting strategies to address oppositional and defiant behaviors, rather than directly targeting children's difficulties with emotions. To addre

PURPOSE: This article provides an overview of current treatment options for adults and adolescents suffering from eating disorders (ED).
VIEWS: ED are prevalent public health problems that considerably impair physical health and disrupt psychosocial functioning. In primary care settings, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder represent the most frequently seen types of eating disorders, in both adults and adolescents. To address these maladaptive eating-related behaviors and concurrent psychiatric symptoms, various pharmacological interventions and specialized psychologi

INTRODUCTION: Non-suicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) is a new diagnosis proposed in DSM-5 with a need of further study, especially in adolescent clinical populations where non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is particularly prevalent. We aimed to study characteristics of NSSID and estimate an optimal cutoff frequency level of NSSI behavior.
METHODS: Data were collected from 103 outpatient adolescents (ages 12-18) with recurrent self-harm behavior.
RESULTS: Adolescents with NSSID reported significantly more frequent NSSI behavior and suicide attempts than adolescents without NSSID. Frequency o

This study investigated the relationship between mathematics difficulties and psychopathology in a large community sample (N = 881) of youth (8-18 years of age) in the United States. The primary aims of the study were to (a) test the associations between mathematics difficulties and specific components of internalizing, externalizing, attention, and social problems; (b) examine potential age and gender differences; and (c) investigate the longitudinal relationship between mathematics and psychopathology using 5-year follow-up data. Results indicated that individuals with mathematics difficulti

OBJECTIVE: Psychopathy has a considerable societal cost, which motivates research on the mechanisms that cause individuals to engage and persist in antisocial behaviors. It is known that individuals with marked psychopathic traits or callous-unemotional traits typically engage in higher rates of aggressive behaviors. These traits seem to have roots both in biological and environmental factors. This article aims to clarify, through a comprehensive review of the literature, what kind of traumas experienced in childhood may contribute to the development of a psychopathic personality structure.

Exposure to air pollution is known to have detrimental effects on health. Previous studies have also found that exposure to fine particulate matter can cause adverse mental health outcomes. However, the link between exposure to fine particulate matter and children's mental health outcomes remains largely unknown. Thus, this study aimed to understand the mechanisms of the effects of exposure to fine particulate matter on children's mental health outcomes, particularly focusing on internalizing problem behaviors. Using fine particulate data from the Ministry of Environment's Air Korea initiative

Exposure to peer victimization is associated with a variety of adverse outcomes but there is individual variability in its effects, suggesting the need to identify why some youth are resilient in the face of victimization. This research examined whether (a) high-quality parent-child relationships protect youth against the effects of peer victimization on psychopathology (antisocial behavior and depressive symptoms); and (b) mitigation of social risks (deviant peer group affiliation and social helplessness) accounts for the protective effects of high-quality parent-child relationships. Folate deficiency has been suggested as a risk factor for depression in preclinical and clinical studies. Several hypotheses of mechanisms underlying folate deficiency-induced depressive symptoms have been proposed, but the detailed mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we assessed whether post-weaning folate deficiency affect neurological and psychological function. The low folate diet-fed mice showed depression-like behavior in the forced swim test. In contrast, spontaneous locomotor activity, social behavior, coordinated motor skills, anxiety-like behavior and spatial memory did not

Substantial research suggests that excessive reassurance-seeking behavior is associated with exacerbations in depressive symptoms and later interpersonal rejection, yet remarkably few studies have examined predictors of this maladaptive social behavior. This study proposed and examined a diathesis stress model suggesting that beyond the effects of prior internalized distress, a combination of poor inhibitory control and dyadic friendship conflict may be especially relevant predictors of adolescents' excessive reassurance-seeking behavior. Longitudinal associations were examined in a sample of

Primary Objective: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with numerous psychiatric comorbidities, and subclinical psychiatric symptoms. While many symptoms have been replicated in animal models of brain injury, a vast majority of studies utilize naïve rats as subjects, which fail to mimic the complex learning history of human patients. Methods and Procedures: In the current study, we evaluated the effects of a brain injury in animals with early exposure to uncertainty on post-injury decision-making in a probabilistic task, the rodent gambling task (RGT).Main Outcomes and Results: Exposure

Causal learning is the ability to progressively incorporate raw information about dependencies between events, or between one's behavior and its outcomes, into beliefs of the causal structure of the world. In spite of the fact that some cognitive biases in gambling disorder can be described as alterations of causal learning involving gambling-relevant cues, behaviors, and outcomes, general causal learning mechanisms in gamblers have not been systematically investigated. In the present study, we compared gambling disorder patients against controls in an instrumental causal learning task. Eviden

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that often persists in adulthood. It is defined by inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. ADHD is associated with many comorbidities, including eating disorders (EDs). In the last decade, studies have reported that ADHD is linked with binge EDs, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. Many postulates have been proposed to explain the association: 1) impulsive behavior in ADHD patients leads to disordered eating behavior; 2) other psychologic comorbidities present in ADHD patients account for eating behavior;

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether externalizing behaviors are more prevalent in youth who have experienced an episode of malnutrition in the first year of life than in healthy comparison youth.
METHOD: Parents of previously malnourished youth and a matched healthy comparison group completed a behavior rating scale when the youth were 9-15 years of age and again, 2 years later, when they were 11-17 years of age. Longitudinal multiple regression analysis was applied to evaluate group differences adjusted for baseline age, sex, household standard of living, and maternal depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictors of relapse two years after a brief cognitive-behavior group therapy in patients with panic disorder who had failed to respond to pharmacologic treatment.
METHOD: A total of 56 patients with panic disorder were followed who had met remission criteria at 1 year evaluation after 12 sessions of cognitive-behavior group therapy. Demographic and clinical features and life stressors were investigated as predictors of relapse.
RESULTS: At the 2 year assessment, 39 (70%) patients maintained remission status and use of medication was reduced significantly, such tha

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly presents with lower urinary tract symptoms and requires preprocedural bladder filling for urologic evaluation. A 61-year-old male with BPH, diabetes, and hypertension developed altered sensorium, behavioral changes, hiccups, and a single episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure after consuming 4 L of water during 2 h prior to uroflowmetry and ultrasound. Investigations showed hypotonic hyponatremia (serum sodium: 109 mEq/L). Other causes were excluded, and prompt treatment with hypertonic saline and fluid restriction was initiated, resulting in fu
