INTRODUCTION: Globally, disabled individuals experience persistent social inequalities and health inequities, yet the health and wellbeing of Deaf, DeafBlind, blind, and partially sighted (DDBBPS) people remain profoundly under-researched and excluded from social science and health policy agendas. Existing studies narrowly focus on narratives of hearing and vision impairments within a medical model of disability, which pathologizes difference and obscures the biomedical origins of social inequalities and health inequities experienced by these groups.
METHODS: Drawing on critical disability st

PURPOSE: The objective of this clinical trial was to assess the efficacy and safety of omarigliptin monotherapy in young adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Unexpected efficacy results in this trial led to a series of investigations that identified the use of prohibited medication by a substantial number of trial patients.
METHODS: Patients with T2DM who were ≥18 to <45 years of age and either drug-naive or not on an antihyperglycemic agent for ≥12 weeks with inadequate glycemic control were randomized in a double-blind manner to receive omarigliptin 25 mg once weekly (n = 10

For nearly 350 years, the process of disseminating scientific knowledge has remained largely unchanged. Scientists conduct experiments, analyze the data, and publish their findings in the form of scientific articles. Since the turn of the century, this process has been challenged by numerous open science and data sharing efforts to enhance transparency, reproducibility, and replicability of scientific research. Big data approaches, together with machine learning and artificial intelligence, are frequently used to gain insight into the ever-growing complexity of biological systems and biomedica

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), caused by pathology in the cochlea, is the most common type of hearing loss in humans. It is generally irreversible with very few effective pharmacological treatments available to prevent the degenerative changes or minimise the impact. Part of this has been attributed to difficulty of translating "proof-of-concept" for novel treatments established in small animal models to human therapies. There is an increasing interest in the use of sheep as a large animal model. In this article, we review the small and large animal models used in pre-clinical hearing rese

Reproducibility is not only essential for the integrity of scientific research but is also a prerequisite for model validation and refinement for the future application of predictive algorithms. However, reproducible research is becoming increasingly challenging, particularly in high-dimensional genomic data analyses with complex statistical or algorithmic techniques. Given that there are no mandatory requirements in most biomedical and statistical journals to provide the original data, analytical source code, or other relevant materials for publication, accessibility to these supplements natu

Contemporary molecular biology research tools have enriched numerous areas of biomedical research that address challenging diseases, including endocrine cancers (pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, testicular, ovarian, and neuroendocrine cancers). These tools have placed several intriguing clues before the scientific community. Endocrine cancers pose a major challenge in health care and research despite considerable attempts by researchers to understand their etiology. Microarray analyses have provided gene signatures from many cells, tissues, and organs that can differentiate healthy st

Hearing in laboratory animals is a topic that traditionally has been the domain of the auditory researcher. However, hearing loss and exposure to various environmental sounds can lead to changes in multiple organ systems, making what laboratory animals hear of consequence for researchers beyond those solely interested in hearing. For example, several inbred mouse strains commonly used in biomedical research (e.g., C57BL/6, DBA/2, and BALB/c) experience a genetically determined, progressive hearing loss that can lead to secondary changes in systems ranging from brain neurochemistry to social be

Major research and implementation efforts have been devoted to indexing articles according to the major topics discussed, but much less effort to indexing their publication types and study designs (collectively, PTs). In this Perspective, we discuss how indexing PTs differs from topical Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) indexing and requires a different approach. Rather than focus on the technical aspects of machine learning-based indexing models, we emphasize the goals and purposes for which biomedical articles are indexed, and the surprisingly thorny question of how indexing systems should be e

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis [TB] and diabetes mellitus (DM) remain major public health concerns worldwide. TB negatively affects an individual's glucose tolerance, increasing the risk of developing DM. Similarly, DM reduces the host's ability to fight TB infection and increases the likelihood of developing TB and poor response to TB medication. This study analysed stigma and health-seeking behaviour in a sub-district of Accra Metropolis.
METHODS: We used a mixed-methods research approach involving a cross-sectional survey and in-depth interviews to explore community knowledge, stigma, and heal

Photothermal therapy (PTT) for cancers guided by optical imaging has recently shown great potential for precise diagnosis and efficient therapy. The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) fluorescence imaging (FLI) is highly desirable owing to its good spatial and temporal resolution, deep tissue penetration, and negligible tissue toxicity. Organic small molecules are attractive as imaging and treatment agents in biomedical research because of their low toxicity, fast clearance rate, diverse structures, ease of modification, and excellent biocompatibility. Various organic small mol

ConspectusOrganic mixed ionic electronic conductors (OMIECs) represent an exciting and emerging class of materials that have recently revitalized the field of organic semiconductors. OMIECs are particularly attractive because they allow both ionic and electronic transport while retaining the inherent benefits of organic semiconducting materials such as mechanical conformability and biocompatibility. These combined properties make the OMIECs ideal for applications in bioelectronics, energy storage, neuromorphic computing, and electrochemical transistors for sensing. Within the realm of OMIECs,

The phenomenon of pain remains one of the most important challenges in medicine and biology, which often causes disability in humans and worsens the quality of life. The pain is a variable, subjective experience, and it is impossible to fully understand it without getting to know the physiological mechanisms beyond sensory damage of the tissues. There are some gender differences in pain perception, particularly, females tend to be more sensitive towards experimental pain. Interestingly, the observed data is consistent for males throughout life, but as for females, parameters vary according to

Predatory journals are unethical publications that exploit researchers by charging fees without providing proper peer review or editorial oversight. They pose a serious threat to the integrity of scholarly communication, prioritizing profit over scholarship and disregarding ethical standards, which results in the dissemination of research that lacks quality and credibility. This guide offers researchers a practical framework to identify and avoid such deceptive publications, thereby protecting academic integrity and professional reputation. Key indicators of predatory journals include poor vis

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that ischemic stroke can cause atrial fibrillation. By elucidating the mechanisms of neurogenically mediated paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, novel therapeutic strategies could be developed to prevent atrial fibrillation occurrence and perpetuation after stroke. This could result in fewer recurrent strokes and deaths, a reduction or delay in dementia onset, and in the lessening of the functional, structural, and metabolic consequences of atrial fibrillation on the heart.
METHODS: The Pathophysiology and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation Detected after Ischemic St

BACKGROUND: In many studies, some information might not be available for the whole cohort, some covariates, or even the outcome, might be ascertained in selected subsamples. These studies are part of a broad category termed two-phase studies. Common examples include the nested case-control and the case-cohort designs. For two-phase studies, appropriate weighted survival estimates have been derived; however, no estimator of cumulative incidence accounting for competing events has been proposed. This is relevant in the presence of multiple types of events, where estimation of event type specific
