Four siblings of a family of 11 were afflicted with a predominant parkinsonian syndrome, pyramidal signs, intellectual deterioration, and peripheral neuropathy. The effects of verapamil on calcium-induced decrease deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) and on the filterability of RBCs from healthy volunteers and patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were investigated in vitro using a gravity driven filtration technique. The filterability of RBCs was increased by verapamil 1 microgram/ml (P less than 0.01) in healthy volunteers (P less than 0.05) and in patients with PSS (P less than 0.05). We report a 26-year-old female with AML, FAB classification M5 who was initially treated with induction therapy consisting of idarubicin and cytarabine followed by high-dose cytarabine and autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplant for consolidation. The patient remained in remission for 1 month post-PBPC transplant, when relapse was noted. Reinduction therapy with idarubicin, cytarabine and etoposide was unsuccessful, and the patient underwent an unrelated, two-antigen mismatched umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplant for salvage after melphalan plus total body irradiation.

Insufficient sleep has been linked to diet, but its relation to longer term folate status is unclear. We hypothesized that red blood cell (RBC) folate measures would be inversely associated with insufficient sleep.
