OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the relationship of female sex, aortic pathology, and left ventricular function to outcome after an operation for aortic regurgitation.
METHODS: One hundred nine women underwent aortic valve replacement (n = 92) or repair (n = 17) for pure aortic regurgitation between 1985 and 1996. Mean follow-up was 5.7 +/- 2.6 years. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of amrinone and its metabolites in neonates and infants after reconstructive surgery for congenital heart disease.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Pediatric intensive care unit in a university hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen neonates aged less than 1 month with transposition of the great arteries and 14 infants aged 2 to 6 months with complete atrioventricular septal defect.

The pathophysiology of blast injuries differ significantly from other forms of trauma and typically result in large numbers of distinctly patterned injuries. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that bedside burn intensive care unit tracheostomy is a safe and cost-effective procedure and has advantages over operating room tracheostomy. The charts of all patients who underwent tracheostomies in the burn unit between January 1990 and September 1993 were reviewed retrospectively. We recently treated two patients with engine block-muffler contact burns and greatly underestimated the devastating injuries to bone, deep fascia, and muscle. As a result, each patient required multiple procedures to close their burn wounds. Ten-year data from the University of Washington Burn Unit confirmed our observation that these burns tend to be considerably deeper than suspected. We tested effects of fluid resuscitation, early burn excision/grafting, and blockade of afferent stimuli from the burn wound on bacterial translocation and acid-base balance after murine burn injury.
