Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. An autopsy case of the panencephalopathic type and a review of the literature.

This is a case report of a purported panencephalopathic type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (C-J) disease in a 61-year-old Japanese farmer. He died nine months after the onset of clinical symptoms. This variety of C-J disease was named and reported in 1981 by Mizutani. The characteristic feature is extensive degeneration of cerebral white matter not related to cortical damage in addition to the spongiform changes in the cortical gray matter. The case was diagnosed clinically and at post mortem marked neural loss, astrocytic macrogliosis, and degeneration of subcortical white matter were found. Senile pl

The combination of evoked responses with sensory-motor tests in practical neuro-otological diagnostics.

Vertigo, giddiness, tinnitus and hearing loss frequently occur in lower brainstem disorders as well as in inner ear diseases. To differentiate the inner ear disorders from central disease we use the impulse-traced craniocorpogram (ITCCG) for the vestibulo-spinal investigation and the acoustically evoked brainstem potentials as an objective indicator of central hearing dysfunction. Craniocorpography is a simple, objective and quantitative whole-body as well as intracorporal recording technique for head and body movements. It can be used as an office procedure, giving objective and quantitative

Central projections of the lateral line and eighth nerves in the bowfin, Amia calva.

The first-order connections of the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves and of the eighth nerve were determined in the bowfin, Amia calva, using experimental degeneration and anterograde HRP transport techniques. The termination sites of these nerves define a dorsal lateralis cell column and a ventral octavus cell column. The anterior and posterior lateralis nerves distribute ipsilaterally to two medullary nuclei-nucleus medialis and nucleus caudalis. Nucleus medialis comprises the rostral two-thirds of the lateralis column and contains large, Purkinje-like cells dorsally and polygonal,

Neuroaxonal dystrophy, a juvenile-adult form.

This paper is an anatomoclinical study of a neuroaxonal dystrophy case, starting in childhood and evolving up to maturity, which may be considered as a juvenile-adult form of this syndrome. Several of the morphologic emphasized aspects suggest that this juvenile-adult form is a primary affection of the axon and therefore, may be considered as a separate entity, differing from the Hallervorden-Spatz disease.

The impact of intraventricular hemorrhage on brainstem auditory function in preterm babies.

OBJECTIVE: Whether intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm babies affects the brainstem auditory pathway is undetermined. This study investigated the functional status of the pathway in preterm babies with IVH to assess the effect of IVH on the pathway. METHODS: Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was studied at term equivalent age in 83 preterm babies with or without IVH and 35 normal term controls, and between different groups of babies to detect any abnormality in preterm IVH babies. RESULTS: Compared to the normal term group, the preterm IVH group manifested an elevated BAER t

Neuroserpin normalization by mesenchymal stem cell therapy after encephalopathy of prematurity in neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemia (HI), infection/inflammation and reperfusion injury are pathogenic factors of encephalopathy of prematurity, which involves maturational/neurotrophic disturbances in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPC) and neurons/axons. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) might facilitate neuroserpin production, which is neurotrophic for OPC/neurons. This study investigated MSC effects on developmental disturbances after lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-sensitized HI/reperfusion (LHIR) injury and the relation to neuroserpin expression. METHODS: Postnatal day 2 (P2) rat pups received intrape

Auditory brainstem stimulation with a conformable microfabricated array elicits responses with tonotopically organized components.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) restore hearing to deaf individuals not eligible for cochlear implants. Speech comprehension in ABI users is generally poor compared to that of cochlear implant users, and side effects are common. The poor performance may result from activating broad areas and multiple neuronal populations of the cochlear nucleus, however detailed studies of the responses to surface stimulation of the cochlear nucleus are lacking. A conformable electrode array was microfabricated to fit on the rat's dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). It hosts 20 small electrodes (each 100 μm diam

Operative findings and surgical outcomes in patients undergoing Chiari 1 malformation decompression: relationship to the extent of tonsillar ectopia.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of Chiari 1 malformation is based on the extent of tonsillar ectopia. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between the extent of tonsillar ectopia and the intra-operative findings and clinical outcome following Chiari decompression surgery. METHODS: Patients were divided into four groups depending on the position of the cerebellar tonsil (T): group 1: 0 < T < 3; group 2: 3 ≤ T ≤ 5; group 3: 5 < T ≤ 10; and group 4: T > 10. Intra-operative observations were recorded with regard to compression of the brain stem by posterior inferior cerebellar artery (pica), neuroma

Investigation of auditory brainstem function in elderly diabetic patients with presbycusis.

We performed brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) examinations in 100 patients older than 60 years and having type I diabetes mellitus and presbycusis. The aim of our investigation was to compare the BAEP results of this group with those of healthy controls with presbycusis and to look for possible correlations between alteration of the auditory brainstem function and the aging of elderly diabetic patients. Absolute and interpeak latencies of all waves were prolonged significantly in the study group of diabetic patients. The amplitudes of all waves I through V were diminished in the stud

Far posterior subtemporal approach to the dorsolateral brainstem and tentorial ring: technique and clinical experience.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical access to the posterolateral mesencephalon or tentorial ring can be problematic, depending on the angle of the tentorium and associated venous structures. A far posterior subtemporal approach was developed that uses the wide opening of the tentorium and the option of supratentorial retraction of the cerebellum to provide an excellent angle of approach to this region. Details of this technique and a series of eight patients with lesions treated by this approach are presented. METHODS: Seven cavernous malformations and one dural arteriovenous malformation were approached in

Otoacoustic emission in patients with neurological disorders who have auditory brainstem response abnormality.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) were evaluated in 51 ears of 30 patients with a severe auditory brainstem response (ABR) waveform abnormality. Thirteen ears showed no ABR to click sound of higher intensity than 100 dBSPL (group 1). Fourteen ears exhibited only wave V or a decreased amplitude pattern of ABR (group 2). Twenty-four ears showed a predominant wave I or no wave III pattern (group 3). Almost all the ears with absent ABR showed no OAE, which strongly suggested hearing loss of cochlear origin, although one patient with alternating hemiplegia of childhood exhibited definite OAEs and audito

Retrosigmoid approach for auditory brainstem implant.

The present paper reports our experience with the surgical retrosigmoid-transmastoid (RS-TM) technique for implanting auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). From April 1997 to August 1998, four patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) were operated on for vestibular schwannoma removal with ABI implantation. The subjects (three men and one women) ranged in age from 22 to 31 years. Tumour size ranged from 12 to 30 mm. A classical RS-TM approach was performed. After tumour excision, identification of landmarks (VIIth, VIIIth and IXth cranial nerves, choroid plexus) to the foramen of Luschka was

Associations of plasma proteomics and age-related outcomes with brain age in a diverse cohort.

Machine learning models are increasingly being used to estimate "brain age" from neuroimaging data. The gap between chronological age and the estimated brain age gap (BAG) is potentially a measure of accelerated and resilient brain aging. Brain age calculated in this fashion has been shown to be associated with mortality, measures of physical function, health, and disease. Here, we estimate the BAG using a voxel-based elastic net regression approach, and then, we investigate its associations with mortality, cognitive status, and measures of health and disease in participants from Atheroscleros

Extracellular vesicles derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells alleviate neuroinflammation after diabetic intracerebral hemorrhage via the miR-183-5p/PDCD4/NLRP3 pathway.

OBJECTIVES: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) induced by diabetes results in further brain injury and nerve cell death. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) transplantation contributes to attenuating neurological deficits after ICH. This study investigated the mechanism of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from BMSCs in reducing neuroinflammation after diabetic ICH. METHODS: BMSC-EVs were isolated and identified. The rat model of db/db-ICH was established and the model rats were administered with EVs. miR-183-5p expression in brain tissues of db/db-ICH rats was detected. The brain injury
