BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Cryptosporidium parvum cause chronic antimicrobial-resistant gastrointestinal infections in HIV-1-infected individuals. HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors delay the onset of opportunistic infections, but are not known to reverse established infections. HIV-1 protease inhibitors are more effective across a broader range of HIV-1-infected immune cells. Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a human disorder characterized by defective Fas signaling, resulting in chronic benign lymphoproliferation and accumulation of TCRαβ(+) CD4(-) CD8(-) double-negative T (DNT) cells. Although their phenotype resembles that of terminally differentiated or exhausted T cells, lack of KLRG1, high eomesodermin, and marginal T-bet expression point instead to a long-lived memory state with potent proliferative capacity. Gaucher disease (GD) is associated with upregulation of CD1d and MHC-class II expression by monocytes.
