High titers of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in corpses of patients with COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: The prolonged presence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in deceased patients with COVID-19 has been reported. However, infectious virus titers have not been determined. Such information is important for public health, death investigation, and handling corpses. The aim of this study was to assess the level of SARS-CoV-2 infectivity in the corpses of patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We collected 11 nasopharyngeal swabs and 19 lung tissue specimens from 11 autopsy cases with COVID-19 in 2021. We then investigated the viral genomic copy number by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase cha

A critique of whole body gestational donation.

In her controversial paper, Anna Smajdor proposes that brain-dead people could be used as gestation units for prospective parents unable or unwilling to undertake the act themselves-what she terms whole body gestational donation (WBGD). She explores the ethical issues of such an idea and, comparing it with traditional organ donation, asserts that such deceased surrogacy could be a way of outsourcing pregnancy's harms to a populace unable to be affected by them. She argues that if the prospect is unacceptable, this may reveal some underlying problems with traditional cadaveric organ donation. S…

Pelvic binder radiography detects occult instability in cadaveric simulated lateral compression type I (LC1) pelvic fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Occult instability in minimally displaced lateral compression (LC) pelvic ring injuries may have clinical relevance for treatment. We describe two novel LC pelvis fracture stress examinations - pelvic binder stress radiography (PBR) and pelvic binder stress bladder manometry (PBM) - which do not require sedation, anesthesia, patient transport, or radiation of personnel. METHODS: A biomechanical study was performed with five fresh elderly cadavers. Sequential osteotomies of the pelvis simulated increasingly unstable LC pelvis fracture patterns (OTA/AO 61A2.2, 61B1.1a, 61B1.1b, 61B2…

Anatomic Study of the Motor Branch of the Ulnar Nerve Regarding Carpal Tunnel Surgery: A Cadaveric Study.

Background: Motor branch of the ulnar nerve (MUN) injury during carpal tunnel surgery is rare and it should never be injured during carpal tunnel release (CTR). However, an iatrogenic injury of the MUN can cause catastrophic physical and mental suffering. The aim of our study is to understand the anatomy of the MUN in relation to carpal tunnel in order to prevent iatrogenic injury during CTR. Methods: We dissected 34 fresh cadaver hands and located the MUN in relation to the anatomical axis used for carpal tunnel surgery. Possible mechanisms of injury and the vulnerable area of the MUN were de…

The effect of various options for decompression of degenerated lumbar spine motion segments on the range of motion: a biomechanical in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis is a common disease in the aging population. Decompression surgery represents the treatment standard, however, a risk of segmental destabilization depending on the approach and extent of decompression is discussed. So far, biomechanical studies on techniques were mainly conducted on non-degenerated specimens. This biomechanical in vitro study aimed to investigate the increase in segmental range of motion (ROM) depending on the extent of decompression in degenerated segments. METHODS: Ten fresh frozen lumbar specimens were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate

Nerve relationships to the sacrospinous ligament: application to suspension procedures and transgluteal approaches for nerve repair and tumor removal with three case illustrations.

BACKGROUND: Transvaginal suspension procedures often use the sacrospinous ligament (SSL), which attaches onto the ischial spine (IS). However, nerve-related sequelae (e.g., sciatic nerve injury) following such procedures have been reported. Therefore, the current anatomical study was performed to better understand these relationships. Additionally, three case illustrations of patients with injury to the sciatic nerve following sacrospinous ligament suspension procedures are included to exemplify the significance of a thorough knowledge of this anatomy. METHODS: In 20 human adult cadavers (40 …
