Phototherapy-Associated Changes in Ionized Calcium Among Neonates Born at ≥35 Weeks of Gestation.

Background  Phototherapy is the standard treatment for clinically significant unconjugated neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Although generally safe and effective, phototherapy has been associated with alterations in calcium homeostasis. The magnitude and clinical relevance of phototherapy-associated reductions in ionized calcium (iCa) remain uncertain, particularly among neonates born at ≥35 weeks of gestation. Objective  To evaluate changes in iCa before and after phototherapy in neonates born at ≥35 weeks with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Methods  This prospective cohort study included 145 n…

Carbonate-System Perturbation by Invasive Bivalves Threatens Drinking-Water Security in Calcium-Limited Catchments.

Invasive bivalve ecosystem engineers pose an under-recognized threat to drinking-water security. In the Waikato River, New Zealand, rapid establishment of Corbicula fluminea (Asian clam) since their 2023 incursion has depleted dissolved calcium ∼24% below historical baselines through biogenic CaCO3 fixation at ∼14 ± 14 tonnes day-1 (2024-2025) while simultaneously raising alkalinity ∼15-20% through catabolic NH4+/HCO3- excretion. Residence-time mass balances yield a basin-scale population density of 370 ± 323 individuals m-2, consistent with independent field surveys (557 ± 435 individuals m-2…

Calcium induced N-terminal gating and pore collapse in connexin-46/50 gap junctions.

Gap junctions facilitate electrical and metabolic coupling essential for tissue function. Under ischemic conditions (e.g., heart attack or stroke), elevated intracellular calcium (Ca²+) uncouples these communication pathways to limit the spread of cytotoxic signals, yet the structural basis of this protective response remains unclear. Here, using single-particle cryo-EM, we define the Ca²+-dependent gating mechanism of native connexin-46/50 (Cx46/50) gap junction channels. Ca2+ binding promotes an ensemble of N-terminal (NT) domain conformations spanning destabilized and fully gated states. Th…

Calcium-sensing receptor-NLRP3 inflammasome signaling in cardiovascular diseases: Preclinical evidence and translational perspectives.

The chronic low-grade inflammation driven by NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is increasingly acknowledged as an underlying mechanism of myocardial infarction, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Extracellular Ca2+, amino acids, and other ligands link to intracellular Ca2+ overload, mitochondrial dysfunction, reactive oxygen species generation, thioredoxin-interacting protein activation, and NF-κB-dependent inflammasome priming via the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). Experimental studies indicate that CaSR may activate the NLRP3 infl…

Calcium-dependent protein kinase signalling in plant immune responses: current status and future prospects.

This review focuses on the critical role of CDPKs in advancing plant immunity research, highlighting how their functions can uncover key defence mechanisms and bridge critical knowledge gaps in the field. Calcium serves as the cornerstone of immune signalling, propagating pathogen-induced signals through specific sensors and decoders. Among these, calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) stand out as plant-specific signal transducers, directly converting calcium fluxes into defence activation. By modulating key immune components, CDPKs act as key hubs in plant immunity. Deciphering their role…

ANXA1 Promotes Endoplasmic Reticulum-Mitochondria Calcium Coupling to Sustain Lenvatinib Resistance in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Lenvatinib is the most widely used first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, drug resistance remains a major clinical challenge, highlighting the need to identify the underlying mechanistic drivers. Here, we identified a role for annexin A1 (ANXA1) in promoting lenvatinib resistance by supporting endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-mitochondria communication. Live-cell structured illumination microscopy revealed that ANXA1 deficiency induced the dissociation of ER-mitochondria contact sites (ERMCS), and Ca2+ kinetic analysis revealed that ANXA1 enhanced mitochondri

Cis-regulatory inactivation of vitamin D signaling confers extreme calcium tolerance in Jialing fish.

The turquoise karst lakes of China's Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve harbor among the highest natural calcium concentrations known in freshwater, around threefold higher than adjacent rivers. Yet the Jialing fish (Schizopygopsis kialingensis) thrives there with serum calcium levels indistinguishable from river-dwelling conspecifics. We show that this calcium tolerance arose through evolutionary loss of vitamin D signaling. Lake and river populations diverged ∼410,000 years ago. Gill transcriptomics revealed >90% suppression of vitamin D receptor b (vdrb) and 99% reduction of its downstream calcium t…

HuR-dependent expression of RyR2 contributes to calcium-mediated thermogenesis in murine brown adipocytes.

Several thermogenic pathways have been described in adipose tissue, including calcium-mediated thermogenesis in beige adipocytes. We have previously shown that adipocyte-specific deletion of the RNA binding protein human antigen R (HuR; Elavl1) results in thermogenic dysfunction. RNA sequencing revealed the downregulation of several calcium transport genes upon HuR deletion. The goal of this work was to define the HuR-dependent mechanisms of calcium driven thermogenesis in brown adipocytes. Brown adipose tissue (BAT)-specific HuR-deletion (BAT-HuR-/-) mice have no changes in their body weight,…

Mechanical and rheological behavior of robocast biphasic calcium phosphate cement reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets.

In this study, a biphasic calcium phosphate cement (BCPC) was fabricated, combining the biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HA) and the biodegradability of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and processed by robocasting, an extrusion-based technique, for bone tissue engineering applications. Despite its well-known biological performance, this material is brittle - mainly used as bone graft substitutes due to its limited mechanical strength. To overcome this limitation, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were incorporated into the cement as a reinforcing filler. Their addition not only enhanced the mec…

Nesfatin‑1 Deficiency Exacerbates Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate-Induced Cellular Injury in Renal Epithelial Cells.

Calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals are major contributors to nephrolithiasis-associated renal tubular injury, primarily through mechanisms involving oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). While nesfatin-1 is known for its antioxidant and cytoprotective actions, the specific role of endogenous nesfatin-1 in regulating COM-induced epithelial injury has not been fully defined. In this study, nesfatin-1 was silenced using antisense oligonucleotides in NRK-52E and primary renal tubular epithelial cells to examine how loss of endogenous nesfat…

Machine learning combined with WGCNA reveals potential calcium uptake-associated biomarkers in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, characterised by progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Although previous studies have suggested a correlation between calcium signal disruption and the development of PD, the role of genes associated with store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) in PD remains unclear. AIM: To combine machine learning methods with Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to systematically screen and identify SOCE-associated candidate genes and evaluate their potential for a…

Carbonyl-staggered covalent organic frameworks for high-rate and stable rechargeable calcium-organic batteries.

Rechargeable calcium batteries are promising for next-generation energy storage devices due to the high crustal abundance of calcium (Ca) and the high-capacity and dendrite-free nature of Ca metal. However, their implementation is hindered by the lack of high-power and high-capacity positive electrodes, largely due to sluggish Ca2+ diffusion in inorganic hosts and limited active-site utilization in organic electrodes. Here we design a series of covalent organic frameworks incorporating different quinone units to construct carbonyl-staggered channels that accelerate Ca2+ hopping, enhance access…

Rolling contact fatigue dataset for AISI 52100 bearing steel balls under calcium grease lubrication.

Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is a dominant failure mechanism in bearings; however, open-access datasets analyzing RCF under varying lubrication conditions remain scarce. This study aims to address this problem, in which AISI 52100 bearing steel balls were tested using a four-ball tribometer according to IP 300 standard. Three calcium-soap-thickened greases of National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) grades 0, 00, and 000 were used and each was formulated with extreme-pressure additives. A total of 63 trials (21 per grade) were conducted at 1470 rpm, under a peak axial load of 5739 N. The …

Calcium in biopolymer-based food-packaging systems: Interfacial interactions, network regulation, and functional performance.

Biopolymer-based food-packaging films and related formats are widely investigated as alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics; however, their practical use remains limited by moisture sensitivity, weak wet integrity, insufficient barrier performance, and limited active functionality. Calcium functionalization provides a potential route to address some of these limitations through soluble Ca2+ salts or particulate Ca-based materials. This review critically examines Ca-functionalized biopolymer-based food-packaging systems using a structure-function-processing-safety framework. Natural-biopoly…

South Asian Cardiovascular Risk: Role of Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring and Computed Tomography Angiography.

South Asians (SAs) experience a disproportionately high burden of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, yet conventional risk assessment algorithms often underestimate their cardiovascular risk. This review highlights the evolving role of atherosclerosis imaging, namely, coronary artery calcium scoring and coronary computed tomographic angiography (CTA), as complementary tools for earlier detection and refined risk stratification in SAs. The authors review evidence demonstrating earlier appearance and greater coronary plaque burden in SAs, often accompanied by higher risk plaque fe…
