UNLABELLED: BACKGROUNDŕ: Hyperreactio luteinalis is a rare condition that stems from theca cell hyperplasia in the ovaries due to a high level of human chorionic gonadotropin during gestation. It occurs commonly in pregnant patients with trophoblastic disease, occasionally in multiple pregnancies, and rarely in normal singleton pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old pregnant woman, G3 P0, who was admitted to the Perinatology Clinic with increasing findings of virilization during pregnancy was presented. The patient had bilaterally enlarged multicystic ovaries on sonographic examination and ele

The patient was a 62-year-old male who underwent wide resection and radiotherapy for right scapular chondrosarcoma 12 years ago. An abnormal shadow was detected in the right upper lung field included in the irradiated field on chest X-ray. Since the nodule tended to enlarge, a malignant lung tumor was suspected, and surgery was performed. On histological examination, spindle cells densely proliferated in a bundle pattern. Vimentin, bcl-2 protein, and CD99 were positive, and CD34, cytokeratin, AE1/AE3, and EMA were partially positive on immunohistochemical staining. The SYT-SSX (synaptotagmin-

A novel hydroxyapatite (HAp)/poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanocomposite nonwoven fabric, which was coated and mixed with calcined HAp nanocrystals, and has submicron-sized dimples on its surface, was fabricated. First, HAp-mixed PLLA fabric was prepared by electrospinning a HAp nanocrystal dispersion in dichloromethane (DCM)-dissolved PLLA. It was found that most of the HAp nanocrystals were not exposed on the HAp-mixed PLLA fiber surface but covered with the PLLA matrix. A HAp-nanocrystal coating was applied onto the surface of the HAp-mixed PLLA fabric after corona discharge treatment followed

The authors report here robust autophagy observed by electron microscopy in both the Echigo-1 strain of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in hamsters and the Fujisaki strain of Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease in mice. In both models, autophagic vacuoles were observed in several cellular compartments. In neuronal cell bodies, autophagic vacuoles of different size were seen. The cytoplasm of some neurons also contained semicircular cisterns equivalent to an early autophasophore. The major target of autophagy was dystrophic neurites, i.e., enlarged neuritic processes--mostly dendrites but also axo

Leukemic infiltration of the kidney is usually silent, and the admission of the patients with renal dysfunction or acute kidney injury is uncommon. We present a 34-year old hemodialysis patient with new onset of uncontrolled hypertension, erythropoietin-resistant anemia, thrombocytopenia, and Bell's palsy. On admission, his blood pressure (BP) was 210/110 mmHg and he had petechiae and purpura at upper and lower extremities. Renal ultrasonography (USG) showed bilaterally enlarged kidneys without hydronephrosis, unlike his previous USG, which determined bilaterally atrophic kidneys. Acute lympho

A comparative study was performed between the trypanocidal efficacy of and associated immune response to benznidazole and posaconazole in a murine model of Chagas disease. Both drugs led to 100% survival, suppression of parasitaemia and reduction of specific anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies following chronic infection. All posaconazole-treated animals had negative haemocultures at 54 days post infection, whilst 50% of those treated with benznidazole had positive results. Although both drugs were effective in reducing parasitism and inflammation in the heart, posaconazole-treated animals had p

BACKGROUND: There is a higher risk for malignant tumours in patients who underwent any kind of radiotherapy.
MAIN OBSERVATIONS: An 87-year-old patient with an extended squamous cell carcinoma of the neck was referred to our hospital. The large ulcerated tumour showed a deep infiltration of the para-vertebral muscles and the spinal processes C6-C7. The tumour was known since about six years and appeared about 46 years after low-dose radiotherapy of a cervical haemangioma of the neck in 1961. The large dimension of the tumour leaded to a radical surgical removal and a sufficient fast reconstruc

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is an extremely rare, benign neoplasm that predominantly involves the major salivary glands. The major problem in dealing with sebaceous adenoma is the recognition of this entity to avoid confusion with other more aggressive neoplasms, such as mucoepidenmoid carcinoma. In particular, recognition of this entity in cytologic specimens is important to avoid radical surgery.
CASE: A 29-year-old woman presented with an enlarging parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy showed cellular smears composed of sheets and aggregates of cuboidal

BACKGROUND: Verrucous carcinoma is a well-differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma seen on mucosa and skin, including the hands.
METHODS: We report the case of a large verrucous carcinoma of the right palm which was completely resected with a fourth ray resection and remained without evidence of tumor recurrence or metastatic disease during follow-up for 11 years. On this basis, we reviewed all 15 previously published cases of verrucous carcinoma of the hand to define the peculiarities of this uncommon tumor and to give diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations.
RESULTS: Verrucous

We report a case of acute-onset dropped head syndrome in a 65-year-old patient in whom the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was initially proposed based on electromyographic signs of neck and shoulder muscle denervation. There were no signs of pyramidal involvement and the clinical and electromyographic signs of motor denervation never evolved beyond the neck and shoulder girdle muscles after a 6-year follow-up period, which argued against ALS. Other causes of dropped head syndrome were carefully ruled out based on clinical findings, electrodiagnostic studies and blood investig

Dysthyroid orbitopathy is a disease that is edematous and inflammatory, generally chronic, sometimes subacute or acute, and is characterized by exophthalmos in the majority of cases, retraction of the lid, restrictive strabismus with diplopia, corneal ulceration, ocular hypertension, and compressive optic neuropathy. Proptosis is the cardinal sign. Exophthalmos is frequently axial and is bilateral in 85%-90% of cases. Displacement of the globe in the vertical and horizontal axes is not rare, particularly when intense enlargement of an extraocular muscle produces a mass effect. Proptosis stems

Paraganglioma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor arising from the neural crest, which includes tissues such as the adrenal medulla, carotid and aortic body, organs of Zuckerkandl, and other unnamed paraganglia. The head, neck, and retroperitoneum are the most common sites for paraganglioma. However, paraganglioma of the pancreas is extremely rare. We report our experience of this rare disease. A 70-year old female patient admitted for a pancreas tail mass detected by computed tomography (CT) scan checked for vague left flank pain. CT with contrast enhancement showed a 4.2-cm heterogeneously enhanc

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises in the deep soft tissues, especially in the lower extremities, with rare cases involving the subcutis or dermis. We report a 60-year-old man with an enlarging cutaneous mass in the right lower thigh. An incisional skin biopsy showed a well-defined, but non-encapsulated neoplasm, characterized by extensive cartilage with marked cellularity, atypia and high mitotic activity, involving the dermis and subcutis. Although osteoid or bone was not observed, a diagnosis of cutaneous chondroblastic osteosarcoma was suggested after ex

The association of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and mycosis fungoides (MF) has never been reported. We report a 77-year-old female who was referred for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) of an AFX on the right hand. At the time of presentation, this patient had stage III MF, with erythroderma and palpable lymph nodes. Our patient's AFX measured 1.5x2.8 cm. The tumor was removed by MMS with clear margins. The pathologic specimen revealed a relatively well-circumscribed neoplasm in the upper dermis composed of atypical spindle cells with pleomorphism, hyperchromatic nuclei, and brisk mitotic activi

Malignant changes in persistent venous leg ulcers are a grave complication of chronic impaired wound healing. In our case, a venous leg ulcer had persisted on the right calf for 30 years. Exophytic tumors in the ulcer with frequent bleeding prompted biopsies. A squamous cell carcinoma was found, but only in the second biopsy. The surgical procedure was planned so that in a single session both the tumor and the underlying causes of the chronic venous insufficiency in the leg could be treated appropriately. Extirpation of the enlarged lymph nodes in the groin was combined with crossectomy and re

A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of exertional dyspnea and leg edema during the previous month. Her systolic blood pressure on admission was 80 mmHg with 12 mmHg of pulsus paradoxous, and her pulse rate was 110 beats/min. Chest radiography revealed marked cardiomegaly and echocardiography showed massive pericardial effusion mainly behind the left ventricle and collapse of the right ventricle. The initial diagnosis was pericardial tamponade. Pericardiocentesis and pericardial drainage revealed bloody pericardial effusion. After drainage, her vital signs improved and her

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare progressive disease of unknown etiology that typically affects women of childbearing age. It is characterized by an abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle cells causing gradual obstruction of small airways, frequently resulting in respiratory failure and death. While LAM is predominantly a lung disorder, we report a case of retroperitoneal LAM in a patient who had no evidence of pulmonary involvement. A 59-year-old female presented with postmenopausal bleeding and no other complaints. She was found to have a low attenuation retroperitoneal mass on abdo

Mycobacteria have acquired an intracellular lifestyle within the macrophage, which is best exemplified by the enlarged infected histiocytes seen in lepromatous leprosy. To survive within the cell, mycobacteria must escape intracellular bactericidal mechanisms. In a study of Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guérin (M. bovis BCG) infection, it was shown that the host protein, CORO1A, also known as tryptophan aspartate-containing coat protein (TACO), accumulates on the phagosomal membrane, resulting in inhibition of phagosome-lysosome fusion, and thus augmenting intracellular survival. In thi
