Do Improvements in Maternal Mental Health Predict Improvements in Parenting? Mechanisms of the Mindful with Your Baby Training.

Postpartum mental health symptoms are associated with parenting difficulties, which have negative consequences for child development. Interventions for young mothers should target their mental health problems and parenting difficulties. Mindful with Your Baby (MwyB) is an intervention for parents, with a baby, who experience (mental) health problems and/or stress or insecurity in parenting. This study seeks to replicate previous effects of MwyB regarding mindfulness, mindful parenting, maternal (mental) health (psychological distress, depressive mood, physical health complaints) and parenting

Trajectories of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Self-Reported Health at Age 18.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing evidence of links between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and long-term health outcomes, there has been limited longitudinal investigation of such links in youth. The purpose of these analyses was to describe the patterns of exposure to ACEs over time and their links to youth health. METHODS: The current analyses used data from LONGSCAN, a prospective study of children at risk for or exposed to child maltreatment, who were followed from age 4 to age 18. The analyses focused on 802 youth with complete data. Cumulative exposure to ACEs between 4 and 16 was used t

Causes and consequences of early-life health.

We examine the consequences of child health for economic and health outcomes in adulthood, using height as a marker of childhood health. After reviewing previous evidence, we present a conceptual framework that highlights data limitations and methodological problems that complicate the study of this topic. We then present estimates of the associations between height and a range of outcomes--including schooling, employment, earnings, health, and cognitive ability--measured in five data sets from early to late adulthood. These results indicate that, on average, taller individuals attain higher l

Privatisation of health services and the reproductive health of rural Chinese women.

China's rural health care system has undergone major changes since the early 1980s, when the country began privatising rural health services. Following fiscal devolution, the rural primary health service was transformed into a fee-for-service system, dependent on the availability of local resources. This article reports some of the results of a study undertaken in 1994-96 to examine the impact of privatization on financing, provision and use of reproductive health services by women in two rural counties in Yunnan Province, China. The most common self-reported symptoms of reproductive morbidity

Determining the risk factors of malaria and anemia in children between 6 and 59 months using the joint generalized linear mixed model on the 2021 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey dataset.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and anemia are significant public health concerns that contribute to child mortality in African. Despite global efforts to control the two diseases, their prevalence in high-risk regions like Nigeria remains high. Understanding socioeconomic, demographic, and geographical factors associated with malaria and anemia, is critical for effective intervention strategies. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the risk factors for malaria and anemia in children under 5 years using the joint generalized linear mixed model (JGLMM). METHODS: The Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey (NMIS)

Secondary outcomes of enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (eCBT) for children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition usually presenting with a high degree of comorbid symptoms in the majority of cases. Although face-to-face cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the therapeutic golden standard for pediatric OCD, its accessibility, availability, and consistency in delivery are still limited. To address some of these challenges, an enhanced CBT (eCBT) package was created and introduced. This study explored eCBT's broad-based impact on OCD-related comorbid symptoms, functional impairment, quality of life and fami

A systematic review of the psychosocial factors associated with pain in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Pain is one of the most frequently reported experiences amongst children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA); however, the management of JIA pain remains challenging. As pain is a multidimensional experience that is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, the key to effective pain management lies in understanding these complex relationships. The objective of this study is to systematically review the literature on psychosocial factors of children with JIA and their caregivers 1) associated with and 2) predictive of later JIA pain intensity, frequency, and

Video Intervention Therapy for primary caregivers in a child psychiatry unit: a randomized feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: During child psychiatry hospitalization, working with the families or attachment figures is a challenge, most of the children who are admitted to these units come from multi-problem families, with limited research in this area. Video feedback (VF) interventions have proved to be a powerful resource to promote parental and child well-being in small children and has been used with parents with a psychiatric condition. Parental Reflective Functioning (PRF) is one of the parental abilities that can be improved with VF and could be especially important in coping with conflict and negati

Treatment Decisions in Pediatric Sports Medicine: Do Personal and Professional Bias Affect Decision-Making?

BACKGROUND: Personal and professional biases can affect decision-making regarding important issues in pediatric sports medicine. Gaining insight into the opinions of health care professionals who specialize in pediatric sports medicine will provide information that may be useful for directing ongoing research in this field. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that surgeons would demonstrate bias toward early surgical intervention versus nonsurgeons. In addition, it was hypothesized that youth sports medicine professionals who were parents of a child with a previous major sports injury or concussi

Creation of the gender-equitable school index for secondary schools using principal components analysis.

BACKGROUND: Higher schooling attainment for girls is associated with improved maternal and child health outcomes. In low- and middle-income countries, girls drop out of school at higher rates than boys beginning in early adolescence due to factors such as son preference and lack of access to menstrual supplies. METHODS: Using principal components analysis, we created a gender-equitable school (GES) index with data from 159 secondary schools in Nepal to measure school-level factors that may influence girls' secondary school pass rates. RESULTS: A component describing girls' safety and hygiene

Pregnancy and the Opioid Epidemic.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy is increasing, which often results in poor maternal and neonatal outcomes including neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) as a result of lack of prenatal care and inadequate substance use disorder management. Practice guidelines have been developed to manage OUD during and after pregnancy for mother and baby, but barriers exist, limiting comprehensive implementation. To reduce the impact of OUD in pregnancy and associated maternal and neonatal sequela, implementing compassionate evidence-based care and a non-punitive response is needed. A stigma-free approac

A multifaceted intervention strategy for reducing substance use in high-risk women.

A multifaceted intervention procedure was used at nine sites to reduce the substance use of high-risk women of child-bearing age. The intervention arm featured an intensive home visit/case management system delivered by support specialists through direct programming or referrals. Six domains (mental health, social support, family functioning, self-efficacy/general well being, alcohol use, and tobacco and other drug use) were the focus of the program. Substance use was significantly correlated (P<0.05) with specific measures of mental health, social support, family functioning, and self-efficac

Bringing work home: the microbiota of children of healthcare workers.

Children of healthcare workers have a lower nasal microbiota diversity in early life compared with children of non-healthcare workers, with more pronounced differences when both parents work in healthcare. This study links parental healthcare occupation with differences in nasal microbiota of children, identifying occupational household exposure as a factor potentially influencing microbial colonization. The study highlights parental occupation as an underrecognized environmental determinant of early-life microbiota, providing bases for future research on occupational exposures and child respi

Countrywide perinatal surveillance in Czechoslovakia.

Countrywide perinatal surveillance in four 10-year periods of Maternal Child Health (MCH) care development in Czechoslovakia is described. During this time maternal mortality decreased from 137 to 17/100,000 live births, and perinatal mortality (PMR) from 51 to 12/1000. On the basis of study results, countrywide intervention strategies concerning organization as well as medical measures were gradually drawn up. The greatest decrease in PMR was found through basic perinatal care for all; greatest efficiency followed employment of a risk approach.
