Pathogenetic and molecular classifications of soft tissue and bone tumors: A 2024 update.

Soft tissue and bone tumors comprise a wide category of neoplasms. Their diversity frequently raises diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic options are continuously developing. The therapeutic success rate and long-term prognosis of patients have improved substantially due to new advances in immunohistochemical and molecular biology techniques. A fundamental contribution to these achievements has been the study of the tumor microenvironment and the reclassification of new entities with the updating of the molecular pathogenesis in the revised 5th edition of the Classification of Soft Tissue Tu

The anterior communicating artery variants: a meta-analysis with a proposed classification system.

Morphological and morphometric variants of the anterior communicating artery (AComA) have been described by multiple studies; however, a complete classification system of all possible morphological variants with their prevalence is lacking. The current systematic review with meta-analysis combines data from different databases, concerning the AComA morphological and morphometric variants (length and diameter). Emphasis was given to the related clinical implications to highlight the clinical value of their knowledge. The typical AComA morphology occurs with a pooled prevalence (PP) of 67.3%, wh

A modified Carpentier classification in transcatheter edge-to-edge repair for mitral regurgitation.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most common heart valve disease, and transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) has been recommended as a therapy for severe MR patients by guidelines. The classic Carpentier classification used to guide surgical mitral valve repair but is inadequate for mitral TEER (M-TEER). We herein proposed a new modified Carpentier classification named after "type + segment," which is suitable for M-TEER. We shared our strategies in M-TEER procedure for screening and performing the M-TEER according to the new modified Carpentier classification.

A Versatile and Upgraded Version of the LundTax Classification Algorithm Applied to Independent Cohorts.

Stratification of cancer into biologically and molecularly similar subgroups is a cornerstone of precision medicine. The Lund Taxonomy classification system for urothelial carcinoma aims to be applicable across the whole disease spectrum including both non-muscle-invasive and invasive bladder cancer. A successful classification system is one that can be robustly and reproducibly applied to new samples. However, transcriptomic methods used for subtype classification are affected by analytic platform, data preprocessing, cohort composition, and tumor purity. Furthermore, only limited data have b

Letter to the editor: Re: Pathogenic mechanisms of osteogenesis imperfecta, evidence for classification.

A paper published in Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases proposes a new classification of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) based upon underlying pathological mechanisms. The proposed numbering of OI types conflicts with the currently used numbering and is likely to lead to confusion. In addition, classification of OI according to underlying pathogenic mechanisms is not novel.

The Intrarater and Interrater Reliability of the OMT Classification Among Physicians With a Different Background.

BACKGROUND: The Oberg-Manske-Tonkin (OMT) classification established excellent reliability scores in several validation studies. However, one study published in 2022 found much lower scores in a subanalysis of their sample when very simple anomalies were excluded. Our study assessed the reliability of the OMT among physicians with a different background, all involved in congenital hand anomaly care, and analyzed codes with less agreement. Time required for classification was recorded to give an indication on its usability. METHODS: One hundred digital cases were classified twice with a minima

The Detection and Classification of Scaphoid Fractures in Radiograph by Using a Convolutional Neural Network.

OBJECTIVE: Scaphoid fractures, particularly occult and non-displaced fractures, are difficult to detect using traditional X-ray methods because of their subtle appearance and variability in bone density. This study proposes a two-stage CNN approach to detect and classify scaphoid fractures using anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral (LA) X-ray views for more accurate diagnosis. METHODS: This study emphasizes the use of multi-view X-ray images (AP and LA views) to improve fracture detection and classification. The multi-view fusion module helps integrate information from both views to enhance de

Anatomical and histological classification of the stellate ganglion: implications for clinical nerve blocks.

PURPOSE: The stellate ganglion (SG), or cervicothoracic ganglion, is usually located anterior to the neck of the first rib. Various techniques, such as ultrasonographic imaging and fluoroscopic approaches, are used to assist in the anesthetic blockade of the SG. However, there are reported complications associated with SG block; some patients had medication-related or systemic side effects, and some had procedure-related or local side effects. So, understanding the anatomy of the SG is critical for diagnosis and treatment of nerve block accuracy and to avoid unnecessary nerve damage during sur

Are glenoid retroversion, humeral subluxation, and Walch classification associated with a muscle imbalance?

BACKGROUND: The etiology of humeral posterior subluxation remains unknown, and it has been hypothesized that horizontal muscle imbalance could cause this condition. The objective of this study was to compare the ratio of anterior-to-posterior rotator cuff and deltoid muscle volume as a function of humeral subluxation and glenoid morphology when analyzed as a continuous variable in arthritic shoulders. METHODS: In total, 333 computed tomography scans of shoulders (273 arthritic shoulders and 60 healthy controls) were included in this study and were segmented automatically. For each muscle, the

An Improved k-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm for Recognition and Classification of Thyroid Nodules.

OBJECTIVES: To complete the task of automatic recognition and classification of thyroid nodules and solve the problem of high classification error rates when the samples are imbalanced. METHODS: An improved k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm is proposed and a method for automatic thyroid nodule classification based on the improved KNN algorithm is established. In the improved KNN algorithm, we consider not only the number of class labels for various classes of data in KNNs, but also the corresponding weights. And we use the Minkowski distance measure instead of the Euclidean distance measure.

A practical approach on the classifications of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemia: WHO and ICC.

In 2022, two new classifications of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemias were published: the 5th edition WHO Classification (WHO-HAEM5) and the International Consensus Classification (ICC). As with prior classifications, the WHO-HAEM5 and ICC made updates to the prior classification (revised 4th edition WHO Classification, WHO-HAEM4R) based on a consensus of groups of experts, who examined new evidence. Both WHO-HAEM5 and ICC introduced several new disease entities that are based predominantly on genetic features, superseding prior morphologic definitions. While it is encouraging that two gro
